HTIB or Separate Components for <$500

Hi,

I currently have a Yamaha HTR-5450 that came in a HTIB setup I have previously bought. I have had it for a couple years and I believe I have blown out a couple of speakers because certain frequencies cause rattling. As a result I'm thinking about getting some new speakers. The catch is that I need either tower speakers or speaker stands, because I don't want to hang the speakers. I am not adverse to getting a whole new setup, but my current line of thought is sticking with my current receiver and getting the Klipsch Quintet II with speaker stands. I would use the Yamaha subwoofer that came with my original HTIB. I also looked at the Polk R50's as well, but it seems fry's, has raised the price. Any other alternatives? Does it make sense to just scrap the whole thing and get a new system? Also is the Sony Bravia Link worth it? I have a 40XBR4, and was thinking of switching to sony. Although, the one feature my Yamaha has that I suspect sony doesn't is 5 speaker surround.

Thanks,

Dan

The only reason not to use your current receiver is if you want to upgrade to an HDMI receiver. Otherwise putting everything you have into speakers and sub will provide far more of a performance upgrade.

Outpost.com has the Polk R300 floorstanders at absolute steal right now, if you go that route get em quick, they will not last at this price. Also audioadvisor.com has the Athena LS-300 towers on closeout for a great price.

I would also advise upgrading the sub. The HTIB sub you have while upgrading everything else will be be very disappointing. Even if you go for the more expensive option LS-300s for fronts and matching LC-100 center you'll still have $200ish for a sub upgrade, the Bic H-100 is around $200+ shipping and an excellent choice.

OK, where should I get speaker wire from?

Monoprice.com has great prices if you want to purchase online. If you want to go local. Homedepot, Lowes or Wallmart usually has the best pricing.
