Mits HD1000u vs. Sharp XV-Z3000

Hey all, I am tired of the mits HD1000u lack of black level and also its a tad to bright for my tastes. Also, recently I noticed a ton of light leekage because both fan grills are in the front and all the light spills from it. Abyway the main reason is I dont like the light grey blacks. I saw the revied sharp XV-Z3000 and was woundering if it is suposed to be a better projector then the HD1000u atleast in black levels? It is suposed to have a 4.2K:1 CR at 285 lumens which sounds perfect to me. Is this projector an upgrade from the HD1000u? Anyone?

I own both the hc1500 (basically the same as the hd1000). I would say that it is an upgrade, but not a huge one. It has better blacks, but coming from CRT it still is grey in space scenes and fails the "shadow puppet" test. It has better colors, probably due to not having a clear section on the color wheel.
It also has a bit of light spill, more than the Mitsu.

What would you say produces the best black level/shadow details between these 3:

XV-Z3000
Hd1000u
PLV-Z5

By how much? When I am watching the mits, it looks as if there is a fog over the blacks. It is very annoying and it is somthing that I cant live with. Will the sharp fix that "fog" problem? Do you think the sharp is worth 250$ more then the mits?

Yes it's worth $250 more IMO. I wouldn't pay a lot more than that for it, however.

Yes the blacks are better than the HC1000, but as I said, don't go in expecting CRT blacks, it ain't there...

Would the HD7100 out perform the Z3000 in blacks?

Nope.

I think you would see a better improvement with a grey screen and your current projector. Maybe by messing with the settings you can tone the brightness down and bring the black back. My hd1000u is on a satin white paint at 137 inches. I feel like I could use more brightness but am very happy with the blacks.

well, I expect blacks to look pretty black. I have a CRT projector with 35K:1 contrast ratio and a sxrd with 20K:1 contrast ratio. The blacks on the HD1000u are just not there for me.

you won't be terribly disappointed with the sharp. It actually performs very well in the black/CR department for the price. Just calibrate for your environment and enjoy.

The Sharp is simply a cut above. Only in the lowest APL scenes does it miss.
Sure there's an RS2...but, that's another story. CRT blacks, on the other hand, may be closer than we think with 'laser' and 'velvet' on the horizon.

I have a big CRT....I watch my movies on the PJ....DLP...720p....and I no longer care about "CRT Blacks" per say. DLP is "black enough". Course now I have a better DLP, and my HD70 never really performed well in that department.

This is what I went with a Gray screen +HC1500. I have a CRT-RP TV and it still does not reach the level of blacks but it's black enough. No excess fog on black scenes. I just watchedAVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem, which is a very dark movie ,and was happy with the level of blackness on my PJ.

Yes that movie is a good indicator in the forum review thread several people mentioned there were scenes they couldn't see anything because it was so dark. I didn't have that experiance at all. I came from 57in CRT RPTV you would think I would be more picky.

I am not sure the Sharp will meet your needs. Your expectations for blacks may exceed what non-crt's can do for you.
