I have a few questions that are probably shared with others...

1. On the controlcal site it says to put the PC mode to off while making sm adjustments. If it is put in standard mode after calibration will the settings hold?

2. How many samples are your rgb offsets based on ? Are these panels similar enough that they should be good for most sets?

3. I was surprised that there was a difference for 5020 and 6020, what do you think accounts for this?

Has anyone else had their tv freeze while moving around in the menu? After freezing the tv reboots itself and says please wait tv starting up. Is this normal? Was the memory bank all filled up ?

I'm using a KeySpan adapter, and it is correctly installed on my 64 bit Vista machine.

The baud rate is set to the default 9600. When I load ControlCal, the green light on the KeySpan goes from flashing to steady.

ControlCal gives no communication errors. All of the ControlCal's settings are set to default.

I click the power on button, it shows the command was sent, but nothing happens, even after over a minute.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Rick

What is the configuration of your serial cable? It needs to be "straight through" (required pins are #2, 3 & 5 (Rx, Tx and Ground). Most Female-Female serial cables I have seen are made to connect one PC to another and are "Null Modem" serial cables, where pins 2 & 3 are inverted from one end to the other. This type of cable will not work to connect a PC to a Pioneer serial port.

These are offsets. Whatever your settings are, you adjust them per the offsets.

This has been discussed numerous times. You will have to research this thread to find out why.

the confusion for me on this is that, my default for R-High is 515, and ControlCal starts off everything at 500. so is the -13 you posted taken from a default of 515 or 500?

If you press the refresh button, it will retrieve your current values. The -13 is from your default value. Didn't we go over this about a month ago?

Correct. That's why I said I can't get ControlCal to turn on my TV.

About a week or two ago So how big is the range for RGB offsets (+49!!!). Does this mean it "could" be controlled to be more accurate than the elites (without entering controlcal). Why are there two different settings for RGB offsets, but not the non-SM reference settings on the 5020/6020.

Edit below: That's true. 0-999... Sounds like some people will be doing something stupid on their displays eventually.

Can you make any real adjustments in the regular user menu of the non-Elites

There is only so much you can do without hitting the SM.

I have a question about the break in procedure. Is it better to use the thumbdrive files or the dvd image? I started using the thumbdrive files but wasn't sure about the settings for the slideshow. I didn't know how long to set the interval to and I noticed that in between slides the screen goes black. I didn't know if this was ok and supposed to happen so I tried using the dvd image. I noticed with the dvd that the pictures are up there a lot longer and it seems like it has some different colors (more shades I think...but the screen is white a lot more often then when using the thumbdrive files and going straight through the images). I had assumed the dvd image and thumbdrive files were exactly the same. Can someone please let me know if there is a difference between the two and which I should use or what my settings should be. Thank you!

P.S. Sorry I kind of rambled lol...hopefully you understood what I was saying

The settings you should be using with either the DVD or the thumb drive files is the #1 post on this thread. I'm currently in the process of breaking in my Pro-111FD so I'm in the same boat as you are since I too have noticed that the DVD and thumb drive files are a bit different. I'll look forward to someone who's more knowledgeable answering that part of your question for both of us!

It doesn't matter which one you use, and the settings are the same for both.

D-Nice

I'm very happy to report back that (after I got the right cable) I was able to apply your offsets with no difficulty. I went back into the SM and confirmed the settings were saved.

The key is to actually follow your instructions and not get ahead of yourself.

I'm even happier to report the significant improvement in my picture! It now seems so natural compared to the factory settings.

I know you don't accept payment for the settings you provide, but if you would PM me with your favorite charity I will make a donation to it.

I would encourage all of you 5020 & 6020 owners that are considering this, to go ahead and purchase ControCal and take the plunge. It's not expensive, and it's not difficult to use.

D, if you ever travel to God's Country (Bend, OR) I'm sure I can hook you up with two or three (maybe more) jobs. Be forewarned though, once you get here, you won't want to leave!

Thanks again!

Rick

Thanks D-Nice. I was successful making the changes you recommended to my 5020. This was my first attempt and I merely made the RGB offsets with out the use of a meter. I will probably buy one down the road. But the offsets alone do a nice job improving the picture, what I notice the most is the whites are brighter without losing detail. Movie mode no longer has that brownish/yellow cast.

This made me wonder what others had for their original factory settings, here are mine:

original after changes
R-H 523 510
G-H 522 522
B-H 500 549
All lows at 500

I have a 6020 on the way from Amazon. Are there any calibrators in the Miami Florida area?

So here's an update for all of you who know about my defective 151 panel. John Marty at Axxis sent me a new 151 when my first 151 blew a Scan IC the very first day. Anyways, I live in north Idaho, near Spokane, WA and there really aren't a lot of Pioneer Techs in the area. Anyways, Pioneer made some arrangements for the defective panel to be picked up and transported to the nearest repair shop in my area (they usually wouldn't have done this, and I wish they wouldn't have, because then I would have gotten a brand new one back from Pioneer).

Anyways, I called the repair shop today, since they haven't called me yet and they picked up the defective one this Wednesday. They told me it's been fixed and works like new again (hope fully better than new).

Again, I'm thankful John sent me a new panel, otherwise, I would have gone 3 full weeks without a TVSo I asked John what he would like me to do with the first new 151 and he said he will have his freight company come pick it up...or he would sell it to me for a very good deal. I don't want to post the price, but I wanted to get your ideas on this. I've never had two TV's in my house and I don't even need them, but I may be able to sell it and make some money. Any thoughts?

Josh

If you can sell it locally for a good price I would. Just dont try to ship it

Two 151's in your home!?! If the price is right, put them side by side, AKA, keep em both!!

If it's too much trouble to find a local buyer, just let John take care of it.

Yeah, I think I may try this option.

This would be insane! I could hook up my computer and run them like dual monitors. Too bad my wife would/will never understand.

It will probably come down to this, but it would be nice to sell locally and make a little bit of money. Plus it would save John the expense of shipping it.

I still can't believe Pioneer has no problem with letting me go 3 weeks without a TV (they don't know John overnighted my a new one). It must just be my area, and that there aren't many repair shops around.

Look at it from their perspective- the sale has already been made, they got their money out of you. What do they care how long you wait? So as it stands right now, John has footed the cost of the second TV?

Yeah as far as I know, John picked up all costs involved on the second Kuro 151 that was shipped to me. Like he said, one way or another, he did get me a NEW panel. I really hope his marketing rep took/takes care of him on this defective panel.

While I believe what you're saying, I'm still saddened that this is the approach that a lot of companies take...they just don't seem to value the client as much today and don't really look at the future business; barely even the present, but most of all they look at the past business and want their money now.

I'm very fortunate that these sponsors here at AVSF take care of the consumer and understand the importance of referrals and the value of their name.
