bh200 ethernet hookup question

I'm new to the networking and actual computer stuff, but I just bought a BH200 and am trying to figure out the networking "User Information" ID and password. What exactly is that? I have Cox High speed with Netgear router running a LAN line to the player. Would the ID area be the WEP key off the router and router password the same? I've tried umteen ways of doing it, without any success. After 2 hours I finally got the firmware upgraded, but still need to do the driver.

Thanks, Richard

Try just leaving them blank, cable companies typically don't use a username/password for their internet access. You can download the file to a USB key as well, and that's probably faster.

If you have a lan line running to your router, I doubt you should have to worry about an ID and password at all. Your router should just dole out a local IP address for your machine and, wahla, you're on the network. (That's what DHCP does for you.) That should get you on the internet as well, assuming the router/cable box is set up correctly.

I don't have a BH200 (yet, one should be coming my way) but I have a Samsung 5000 and I had to do very little to get it to see the network (and the internet). It was essentially the default settings, aside from giving it an approximate internet speed. (It wanted to know cable/dsl/t1/ etc.)

I tried doing the network update from the screen and and getting the error message
Cannot find the update,
Check the network connection cable.

I'll unhook my desktop and run the cable directly into the player and see if that works.

I've never used the ethernet on mine, but I downloaded the last 2 firmwares(1 at a time) onto a usb drive and installed it that way(just copied the file onto the drive), and it takes like 5 minutes that way...
You don't even have to point to the file, it'll quickly find it and give you the # asking if you want to update it.
ALOT better(and WAY faster) than updating my Toshiba A1 and A2 over ethernet, or burning onto a disc and HOPING that you didn't create a coaster.

Make sure you set IP Mode to Dynamic IP and you should be good to go. Plug a Ethernet cable into your router and you should be good to go. If I remember right you can't update through the Ethernet unless you have the unofficial March or the official April update installed. To many toys to remember what update problems go with which toy!

Is your router configured to automatically assign an IP address (dynamic)? It will be unless someone has changed it but it's worth checking.

Like Craig says, leave it on Dynamic. You should just be able to plug it straight into your router/modem and it should automatically connect. You can assign a static IP address but things can then get overly complicated.

Why they never include a Wireless connection too is beyond me.

I finally got the player updated after getting a USB drive, and the region free hack, so I'm good to go till the next round of updates.

For some reason my BH200 wouldn't get a dynamic IP from my dlink router. Strange because that's always worked for any other gear trying to access the dlink,

So I just specified a static ip for the BH200 in my dlink, specified that IP in the BH200's setup screen and then it connected just fine.

The networking doesn't really get used much though. A couple of HD-DVD's have had some online features - nothing too exciting.

As for Network Updates, I have my LG set to BD Region B, so the Network Update option is not shown. I could change it back for updates, but its quick and easy to plug in a USB stick.

Agreed.
