Yes .... call the guy back and ask specifically why he gave you that advice in order to better understand what he is trying to tell you.

That said, you're much better served by first doing a "Search This Thread" on the word "axiom" in the "Official Audyssey" Thread and read what others have said about using Audyssey with Axiom speakers. If you're not satisfied it's okay to use Audyssey, then post the question again in that thread to get Chris (founder of the company) to respond to your question and give a more educated response.

Thats actually a little undersized for a full 1080p rip. For instance, most of the ones I have range in the size from 10-15GB and they still only have 2-channel audio. In fact, Beowulf was 35GB, but I believe that one had the full 7.1 audio. Comcast hates me.

Morning folks, first post on here so be gentle

After much reading on the AVS forums I put together a system consisting of:

Samsung LN52A850
Denon 889
Playstation 3
SVS SCS-01 speakers
Motorola DCH-3416 HD Cable box

Both the cable box and PS3 feed directly into the receiver via HDMI and from the receiver to the TV via HDMI.

For the first week eveything ran just fine, but this past week I've been experiencing issues with HDMI consistently. No matter what the feed is I seem to lose my video signal to the TV. The sound keeps playing so I doubt it's from the source devices and it's happened both while using the PS3 and the cable box. The TV will just lose connection to the receiver, sometimes it recovers after 20-30 seconds, sometimes I need to reset power on everything several times to get them working together again. It appears to me based on the symptoms (TV loses video signal, sound still plays) that this is an issue with the receiver or the TV.

I thought maybe this was a heat issue with the receiver maybe? The receiver is in a pretty open enclosure, the only sides "blocked" are the left and right, plenty of breathing room on the top/back/front of the receiver.

I was thinking the most logical test would be to hook up some of these components directly to my TV to see if the issue is with the TV or the receiver, but I wanted to check here and see if anyone else has had similar issues. any feedback would be appreciated!

Most likely you are experiencing HDMI handshaking issues which can be resolved most easily by changing to component cable for the cable box as they are generally more prone to the issue (or just run HMDI from the cable box to the TV and an additional optical cable from the cable box to the Denon). Also try changing the order in which you turn on your components being used.

Also check that HDMI connection to the TV, the fact that it's occurring on both sources and seems to be random in nature could indicate either a loose cable or a bad cable. It's worth the time to swap out that cable and see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Being an IT guy my first instinct was to swap cables. I swapped in a shorter HDMI cable thinking the length may have been causing an issue and it looks to be running OK now (fingers crossed).

On another note, I got my SVS SCS-01 fronts today so I decided to setup them up. When I ran the Audyssey setup it set my fronts to crossover at 150, does that sound odd at all considering these things are basically vertically adapted center channels? This definately doesn't sound as good as when I had the SBS-01's up front, I'm going to try messing with it a bit tonight.

It's very easy to check out whether or not the Denon is setting the crossover frequency correctly in relation to the lowest setting recommended. Simply look up the frequency response of the speaker in question, which for the SVS SCS-01 is 68hz-20khz. If the low limit is below 40hz it will set the speaker to LARGE, otherwise the Denon will set it to SMALL. The Denon should set the crossover no lower than the low limit and generally about 10-20 hz higher. The next higher level above 68hz is 80hz which would be the lowest suggested level and most likely recommended for those particular speakers. Try it out at each of the various settings above 80hz and decide for yourself which you prefer best, although 150 seems to be way to high.
jd, how does your post square with this, from the Audyssey Guide:

2. Lowering the crossover frequency from the calibrated setting is not recommended.
a. Audyssey will not provide correction to the satellite speakers lower than the frequency it measures as the -3 dB point.
I'm agreeing with the OP that for some reason the crossover was probably set too high. AUTO SETUP should be run again at least a couple more times to confirm that setting. He also said he didn't like the current sound, yet another reason to rerun AUTO SETUP.

Ahhh...gotcha, jd.

Well the odd thing is all 3 of my fronts are the same speaker (the scs-01), yet for some reason the auto setup decided my L/R needed to be crossed over at 150, and my center at 80.

I set them all to 80 last night and my perception is that the sound improved tremendously. I could be smoking something though

Thanks for the help!
try re-running Audyssey. it's not unusual to get different crossovers even for the same speakers, as placement and room acoustics (especially how close they are to a wall which could provide boundary reinforcement) can affect the low-end response a lot. But 80 vs. 150... that's almost a full octave difference in response so something is a little fishy.

Although in the end, your own preference of settings of course takes priority, you might be better served by redoing AUTO SETUP (are your mains towed inward toward the main listening position?) again a couple more times as I suggested to see if you can get a crossover closer to 80hz for the mains as well. As SoundofMind quoted from the Audyssey setup guide, it's generally NOT a good idea to lower the crossover frequency from it's AUTO SETUP setting.
I did not have my speakers toed in, should I have? I'll try the auto setup again a few times tonight, was just so weird that it set the crossover so high, it honestly sounded like crap. Only reason I manually set the crossover was because the auto setup was so offbase that I lost all confidence in it.

I'll give it a few tries tonight, thanks for the feedback.
Toe-in depends on the physical make up of the speakers. Your speaker owner's manual should tell you whether it's suggested or not.
OK, just have to write this post. In three weeks, my Denon AVR 2309 will finally arrive, together with my Pioneer Kuro 5090, and the additional speakers of my B&W 6 series set (center, backs, only owned the fronts) and a subwoofer of REL (strata 5). Finally, the Denon BT 1800 will arrive the same day, as well as a bunch of Monster cables...

Can't wait to set things up, already read through the guide of Batpig.

My question is: are there any hints for setting up the woofer? First do the denon setup with, or without?

Man, three weeks...
pwill, welcome. You have a very good start. batpig's guide directs you to the Audyssey setup Guide which has detailed instructions on the sub and links to even more info on sub placement:

I purchased an AVR-889 from Circuit City. The unit didn't come with anything, including a power cord. The power socket on the back of the unit looked like the power cord socket from an XBox 360, so I tried that cord. The unit didn't power up.

What does the power cord look like? Is it just a straight cord or does have a brick involved? I'm assuming it doesn't have a brick?

Hopefully, I didn't purchase a brick. I was told the unit was covered by a warranty.

Welcome, moos. The power cord is plain. There is a seperate small "Power" button next to "On/Stanby" which may be the problem here. Go to usa.denon to download your owners manual and batpig's guide for the translation. You'll also need a setup mic (try ebay) and a Harmony remote.

I am having an issue with rear speakers overpowering the fronts...but in games only (ps3)

when playing 5.1 games, unless I really crank it up the fronts are real quiet

I've ran audessey, I've also calibrated each individual channel using a sound meter, the issue is not there...I just don't understand why this is happening and I am hoping someone can shed some light

the audio out is multi channel and it happens in more than 1 game

What are your individual channel volume settings? How far do you sit from the mains vs. the surrounds when gaming?

I am not sure what they each are, but I am not sure it would matter since I have each channel outputting the exact same DB's, and I know that because I've used a sound meter to verify that...so sound meter, primary position, I output a test tone from each speaker and ensure it reads the same DB's and they're all calibrated properly

thats how I've calibrated it, after running audessy, which did a fantastic job

I don't know if you're using it but I have found using DynamicEQ makes the surrounds a little louder than I'm used to. Also, make sure you are not using the 5 or 7 Channel Stereo modes because this might make the rear volume seem higher.

If you ran AUTO SETUP, the test tones are all the same db, then the Denon takes that information that Audyssey produces and sets the channel levels accordingly. Did you adjust the channel levels BEFORE or AFTER you ran AUTO SETUP? You're correct in that technically the settings should be representative of equal db per channel, however, it would give an idea of what Audyssey did with your speaker levels. What is the efficiency rating of your mains vs. your surrounds?

Or Video Game mode either for that matter which puts a greater emphasis on the surrounds. Leave it in STANDARD mode and see what that does for you. Also check to make sure the FADER hasn't been inadvertently adjusted to REAR for MULTI CH IN.

I have been using DynamicEQ on, I will turn it off

it's set to multi channel in right now. should I change it?

thanks

I ran auto setup in Audyssey, than adjusted them with the sound meter...

what do you mean by efficiency rating of the mains vs surrounds? is that something set in the receiver or is that part of the speakers?

my fronts are rb82
my surrounds are rs42

thanks!

here's my settings:

all speakers small
sub set to LFE
distance is correct
test tone:
FL: -8.5DB
C: -11DB
R: -8.5DB
SR: -8DB
SL: -6.5DB
SW: -12DB

but all of them give me about 70DB on my sound meter

crossover: 80hz, LFE: 120Hz

front speaker setup:normal

I checked and can't find anywhere to set the fade

checked the info from the PS3:
surround mode: multi ch in
signal PCM
fs: 48khz
format: 3/2/.1
I turned off audyssey and it seemed to have fixed it

strange, but thanks for your help guys

It's a speaker rating .. essentially you have "very" efficient speakers which is why you have to dial down the volume on them quite a bit.

FL: -8.5DB
C: -11DB
R: -8.5DB
SR: -8DB
SL: -6.5DB
SW: -12DB
