I notice when switching thru hdmi inputs, specifically to my ps3 hdmi the screen flashes horizontal bars of green/black. Anyone know what/why is causing that?

Bat please shed some light again!
assuming it's just a quick flash for a split second while the screen is blanked out, it's perfectly normal, just your display re-syncing to the HDMI signal. happens on my plasma also.

Hi,
I have a comcast HD box connected to AVR 2309CI though hdmi. Until recently I was able to see non HD channels through AVR, but recently I am not able to see 480p (non HD) channels. I am able to see HD channels.
The audio keeps turning on and off and resolution on comcast box jumps between 480p and 1080i with no picture.
If I connect comcast box directly to my TV everything is fine.

What could have happened to AVR that it doesn't want to show 480p?

Thanks

I have a 2309 connected via HDMI to an Oppo BD-83 set to bitstream. I have many HD disks, DVD-A, SACD and BD concert disks and all decode and play fine. I also use Dyn EQ. I bought the Neal Young BD box, amazing, music 24 bit 192 kHz PCM. Every couple of weeks there is a new BD live download. This week there was a song from his first solo album that he said he remixed in HD. I down loaded it and it was actually a DTS Master encode in stereo. When I played it the blue HD light comes on on my receiver but the red Dyn EQ light goes out. Thinking I had not seen this before I played a couple other DTS Master disks, blue light comes on and the Dyn EQ light stays on. Does anyone know why when I play this BD live download I loose the Dyn EQ?

Maybe it's the Stereo mode triggering Personal Memory Plus.

do a hard reset on your cable box (unplug it for 10 minutes then plug back in), and you may want to contact Comcast for a new box if the problem persists. sounds like yet another crappy cable box problem

can you turn it back on manually?

do you know the DTS-MA bitrates for that track? it's possible the Denon can't use Audyssey with max bitrate (24/192) TrueHD/DTS-MA tracks.

I was matrixing with DPL II, but I thought the memory applied to the input you were using.

Right. Individual surround modes have their own PMP settings too, but now that you mention it I believe DynVol follows input not mode. Ah, well, I just suggested this as a possible factor to rule out. BTW there's more funny business with this particular NY set described in the Oppo thread.

I was not able to turn it on while the song was playing. I went into "audio in" to see what the sampling rate was, it cycled through but did show the rate. I have found it does this for regular Dolby and DTS. If I check the sampling rate of the BD disk material it displays 192. Is the Denon not able to display the sampling rate when it decodes DD, DTS, True DD or DTS master. I can let the Oppo decode and send PCM to the 2309 and see if it will display sampling rate. I bet it will but then no cool blue light. I'll try that tonight.

It plays the BD disk fine in 24/192 with Audyssey Dyn EQ and will display 192.

Hey guys,
Just upgraded to Time Warner's Scientific Atlanta HD-DVR and am using that remote to control everything else in the room (lights included), I found a code that works for this receiver (Denon 889/2309) but I can't find the button to change inputs, is this functionality not active? (if so, can someone pm me the correct code or the TWC remote button that performs this function?)

Thanks,

Another satisfied Denon customer.
first off, controlling other components with a "generic" universal like that HD-DVR remote where you plug in the 4-number codes is a dicey proposition... you are unlikely to get full-fledged support for all functions.

but, secondly, there is no "input" button for Denons that will cycle consecutively through the inputs. you should try, however, using the number pad on the HD-DVR remote and see if that gives you discrete access to certain inputs. For example, "1" might be the TV/CBL input, "2" might be the DVD input, etc. I have found this works sometimes.

It plays the BD disk fine in 24/192 with Audyssey Dyn EQ and will display 192.

The Unofficial Oppo BD-83 FAQ page recommends using LPCM output so I switched from bitsream and it solved my problem. When I played the BD-Live song from the NY box Dyn EQ remained on. The downloaded song is 24/96, the Music on the BD disks is 24/192. I will miss the blue HD light on the Denon. The Audio button on the Oppo lets you diplay or cycle through the audio formats so I can double check that I have the highest rez soundtrack when watching a movie.

Great that it's working for you now. Still, an odd occurance.

I too was thrilled to first see the blue HD light when bitstreaming from the Oppo and it makes it easy to see that you're getting the best soundtrack off the disc. But for BR HD Codecs it makes no difference in SQ if I instead have the Oppo send PCM (no thrilling/annoying light).

Bat,

I keep all of my equipment including this in a entertainment cabinet which I have made even more holes in back to keep everything cool. And when in use I even leave the doors open. I was thinking about installing a cooling fan like this one to help

http://www.amazon.com/CabCool-Lite-C...9417168&sr=8-5

Would you advise doing something like this? Could I just plug this into the back of my Denon so it only powers up when the unit is powered up? Thanks in advance..!
This fan can be plugged into one of the outlets without any issue. Although keep in mind that if you are using HDMI Standby, the outlets are ALWAYS ON. Now, whether you actually need them is another story. If you are leaving the door open and have ventilation in the back and at least 2" above the AVR, you probably won't need the fan at all.

Hello everyone

I need some help.

I need to reset the Microprocessor on my AVR-2309CI Denon Receiver.

The instructions in the Owner Manual say the following

1.) PRESS Power OFF
2.) PRESS Power ON, INPUT MODE, SPEAKER at the same time

When display flashes in one sec interval release.

I keep doing it but it does not take the reset nor does the display flash. Am I doing something wrong?
ghuido, do not use the remote, do this on the front panel.

This can be confusing, however, what it actually says is to press the POWER ON button "while simultaneously" pressing the INPUT MODE AND SPEAKER buttons. You need to hold the latter two down first, THEN press the POWER ON button.

I have had this receiver for 5 months? Got the CC deal. I have the 889 and the sound has been cutting out in my left rear speaker only.

To get it working again on all channels, I have to press mute on the receiver on/off before I hear all speakers. Most of the time I have to press the mute button on/off several times before it starts working again. I found this temp solution by a series of button mashing frustration techniques.

I have it hooked up to a Samsung LN46A630, SA 8300 HDC cable box, an xbox 360 and a PS3.

I noticed the problem when I was playing my X360. Sooooo....I then switched to cable TV to see if the problem was occurring there, of course it was. I have tried replacing the speaker wire, same problem. Maybe it's the speaker? Tried that too, same result. How about changing a setting from 5 channel stereo to Dolby Digital? No go. I looked on the Denon site for firmware updates, don't see model listed.

Anyone have a clue??

Try doing the Microprocessor Reset procedure listed in your Owner's Manual.

Which will erase all my surround/Audessey settings correct?
Correct. It returns the unit to it's factory default settings so you'll have to run AUTO SETUP again. Just copy down your other settings on paper so you can more easily return them to those settings. If you've ruled out the speaker as being defective, then this would seem to be the logical next step.

Today (Sunday) is my first day as a Denon owner, by purchasing the 889 at Fry's Electronics for $379.

I have a few questions.

But first - Back Story:

I wasn't looking at this level of AV receiver because my budget was pretty low, about $350. (About the price I paid for may last receiver I got from Montgomery Wards, when they close doors - Sony STR-DE845) I am no audiophile, I don't have discerning enough ears.

I do know what I was looking for, video repeating and multi-zone, to take care of a clumsy setup, having a need for both separate 5.1 and 2.1 configs in the same room. This meant spending $400+ which was making me very unhappy.

I found an H/K 354 (no box) for $529 and a Pioneer 1019 $505, at BB, the rest was not any better in features or price. (Harman Kardons look so good.) So I left and went to Fry's. While there I was getting the same feeling, nothing in my price range. Then I saw it, the 889.

I had almost considered the 689 for $250, but it didn't have the features I wanted. H/K 154 for $250 didn't have a second zone, etc. I talked to two sales people, they showed me Yamaha and Onkyo, but I kept on thinking about that 889. I then asked about it. Oh it's better than anything they showed me, a $1000 level receiver. (lie) But it had nothing. Just the power cord. I asked to power it on, it did. It was a demo, so I asked about the remote and mic, etc. They said there was none.

I must reiterate in this forum, never take no for an answer. I asked them what happens to the peripherals when they set stuff up and they said they threw them away. I am thinking people are lazy, so I search the internet on my iPhone and see that the remote for the 889 is the 1099. I go to the wall and see if maybe they used the 1099 on another receiver, and here's one, can I take that? The sales person thought for a second and found one in a cabinet to the left, unscratched and clean, and he hands it to me. Then I decided I was going to look through these cabinets myself I didn't care what he thought. I found a mic, though it wasn't Denon. He let me have it anyway. Now I am up to my questions.

1. The mic I found was for Sony. ECM-AC2. In theory this should work for calibration, but what do you think. Do I have to have the one that comes with the 889 (DM-A409)? If so, how do I get one?

2. I went to Denon's website and downloaded all the PDF's. I also went though the specs page and it states the 889 has no 9-pin RS-232 serial port. But it does have an RS-232c (PC Setup and Control Capability). I can't quite figure this out either it does or it doesn't. I can't see anything physically to show for it. I like to tinker a little bit so if there was something then that would be cool.

In closing, I went quite a bit out of my price range (plus a $39, 3 year performance warrantee) to get this unit. I got the "UGH, you're killing me," from the wife. I just hope this is a good investment, and if it does break, I hope the warranty covers a replacement based on features in stead of price.

Welcome dc. A very important feature of your new AVR is the Audyssey room correction. For that to work properly you must use the DM-A409. It is often on ebay for around $30 and can also be ordered from suppliers listed on the Denon website. Please read the http://batpigworld.com/ guide and Audyssey setup Guide linked there. You will find them both very useful.

The first page of the 1909 thread has lots of great info and that thread is a goldmine of info.

Keep in mind that one of the differences between the 889 and 2309 is the lack of RS 232 port which is why it's not listed in my sig for the iPod Video firmware fix.

Well that might explain why he couldn't find it! Forgot that little tidbit. thanks, jd. prior post corrected.

I have a 5.1 system (2309), When I input a 7.1 signal does the 2309 downmix to 5.1 or am I missing some music/soundtrack content. I am outputting from a Oppo BD-83 via HDMI (LPCM).

I have an AVR-889, and I'm having difficulty with getting Dolby TrueHD to show. I have a Blu-ray that supports it (LG BD-370) but it only shows PLXII on the 889 screen. Can't seem to find anything when I search. Sorry.

Yes, it will downmix to 5.1.

Question #1 in the audio section of my FAQ is "why no TrueHD light?"
http://batpigworld.com/fadq.html#audio

As long as the Denon is set to "Auto" for Input Mode and Decode Mode (which is the default) than IT HAS TO BE YOUR SOURCE.

The first step should always be to check what input signal you are getting -- go to the INFORMATION menu and check AUDIO INPUT SIGNAL and it will tell you what the input source is. You can also see the lights on the left side of the display, the number of boxes that are lit up tells you how many channels you are getting. I am betting you are getting only 2-ch PCM?
