I still can't get this OSD issue resolved. I tried using an RCA cable and it still didn't work. Is it possible there is something wrong with the analog signal in the 2309ci? Has anyone else reported this issue?
Have you tried changing the OSD Display Mode (p. 36) to Mode 2?
I'd like to ask a question about the Dolby TrueHD sound and the Denon 2309CI.
I am watching Star Trek right now, and have Dolby TrueHD selected from the disc menu, but on the Denon screen I'm only getting Multi CH Direct displayed, is this the correct setting and what should be displayed?
For some reason I feel this is wrong. Does it not display Dolby TrueHD on the 2309CI screen?
I might not have something set right, should it display on the screen "Dolby TrueHD" or "Multi CH Direct"? If I turn "Direct ON" the screen goes black...not sure if its supposed to be on/off either?

what bluray player are you using? You should see TrueHD displayed on the denon as long as your BR player is setup to Bitstream the HD codecs to the AVR. If it is a PS3 (not slim) then it cant bitstream HD codecs, though technially it should be the same quality if the player devcodes the TrueHD internally and sends it to the AVR as multi channel PCM

Sorry I knew I should have mentioned that. Its the Samsung BDP2500.
Which now looking was setup for PCM, and I have other options; Bitstream (Re-encode) and Bitstream (Audiophile), should I change to one of these?
Thanks scarecrow, that did it, I used the Bitstream Audiophile, and I see TrueHD and the nice Blue HD logo too.

Chris, for future reference this topic is well-covered in my FAQ, which should be your first stop next time

Thanks batpig, its been a while since I've been on here and know you know this stuff well. I will book mark this. It would have taken me a while to find this, so thanks for sharing with me again.

I just updated my 2309 and I think my Denon is bricked

I bought an USB-RS232 converter, installed the driver and began to update (connection test was ok). The Update-Tool erased the old ROM and started to copy. After ~80% the updated freezed. So I unplugged the cable after about 30mins. Now I can always start again (in safe mode) but the update won't be installed completely.

Any ideas?

I already tried two other PCs (Vista and XP), but no difference.
Try installing the update again. As long as you've got a good connection, there's no reason it shouldn't install completely. You might also try Resetting the Microprocessor as well.
I tried about 10 times today...

This is how it looks. This won't change a bit, even after 30 minutes.

I'm desperate

I don't know about the EU version, however, the US version comes with a PDF file that includes the following setup procedure:

a) Don't run other PC application during update.
b) Stop the resident program on PC. (Virus checker and System check utility, etc)
c) Stop the screen saver ability on PC.
d) Stop the power save ability on PC.
e) In case of laptop PC, Use the AC adaptor

And if you've done all that (including turning your screensaver OFF) and it still hangs up then do the following:

If you failed update during Main CPU update, then you need to use this specific update procedure.

1) Push the [INPUT MODE] + [ZONE2 ON/OFF] button simultaneously.
And turn on the power switch of the AV receiver/amplifier.
2) Power indicator indicates red color. This is specific update mode.
3) Execute the firmware update again.

Yea, I knwo these instructions. Denon published them seperately here, but they are basically identical.

That's what I meant with safe mode. It's no problem to "contact" the 2309 this way, but it doesn't change anything in the result: Connection test ok, Update is starting, but stops after some minutes/seconds.

Getting a RS232 straight cable and a notebook with rs232-port tomorrow. Hope I can fix this that way.

But thanks for your support!!

Issue solved!

Don't really know how, but I just tried several other Prolific-drivers and in the end it worked with one that didn't work hours before. But I don't want to think about this anymore.

Thanks jdsmoothie for your responses - obviously you were right in the first place when you suggested just to keep on trying.

Glad it worked! Persistance pays off sometimes.

Hello,

I have searched and skimmed through several related posts, read batpig's tutorial, and the famous PS3 thread with no solution.

Problem: There is no HDMI video display on my Sony (KDL-46W5100).

HW: Denon AVR889, Sony KDL-46W5100, PS3 Slim, PopcornHour

What used to work: Prior to the Sony, I had a Panasonic plasma. The HDMI video was displaying fine from the PopcornHour plugged into the Denon.

Current setup: PS3 HDMI to Denon HDMI2, Denon HDMI out to Sony HDMI1. The Denon HDP input source is assigned to HDMI2, the rest are 'NONE'.

What I have tried:
  1. Connected PS3 directly to Sony HDMI - no problem.
  2. Followed the PS3 famous thread and set various video settings accordingly for the PS3.
  3. Connected PopcornHour via HDMI - no video. This used to work with the Panasonic fine. I only have 2 HDMI cable so it's either PS3 or Popcorn.
  4. Connected PS3 to Denon HDMI1, 2, 3,4. Each time assigned the appropriate HDMI input source - same problem.
  5. Reset the Denon processor. Follow batpig's guide. Same problem.
  6. Connected a 24" PC monitor (with HDMI / DVI adapter) - same problem. PS3 can display video with this monitor using same HDMI cable (with HDMI/DVI adapter).

I think it's something that I missed in the Denon and it could be a very simple solution. Only get to try this late at night when the kids are sleeping. Hope I don't have to send the Denon for service. Any help is much appreciated.

What worked for one poster recently was unplugging the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the AVR and reconnecting the cable while both are ON. If that doesn't work, try power cycling (on/off/unplug) the PS3, Denon, and Sony and let them reset. Then plug bag in and see if that works for you.

On my 889, I haven't been able to get the OSD working from day 1. I even have an RCA going from the Denon monitor out to my plasma's video in. On all video modes, when I hit the menu, I just get the same picture a little bit fuzzier. It looks like it is trying to change the picture, but no OSD shows up.

I've double-checked all of the settings in batpig's awesome guide, but have just chalked it up to a defective receiver. I do welcome any suggestions, however!
If you have tried i/p scaler set to AtoH, Reset the Microprocessor and tried the OSD Display Mode "2" setting all to no avail, then it could be defective indeed.

hmmm... I think I already tried that but I will try it again tonight. What I noticed is that the HD amber light on the Sony is on when I switch the input select (big round left knob) to HDP. The screen seems like it's trying to adjust / sync to the input signal and after a while it displays 'no input source'. Then the Sony HD amber light goes off.

If I plugged the PS3 directly to the Sony, in the PS3 video settings, I have it set to HDMI and it detects the Sony as 1080p output.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I tried your suggestion. Same problem. I bought 2 new HDMI 1.3c cables, swapped out the old ones, same problem. Again, I notice the screen is trying to sync with the Sony amber light on for HD signal but no dice.

I powered off the PS3 and kept the Sony and Denon on, then powered the PS3 on, the Sony displayed that 'HDMI2 1080p HD' on the information banner with a black screen. I tried to use the PS3 controller and pressed LR buttons to see if the picture would come on but no dice.

Is there a 'sync' button on the PS3?
The way to resync the PS3 (fat version anyway) with the monitor/AVR is to hold the Power ON button on the PS3 a few seconds longer then you normally would while it powers on.

Also, make sure you have the HDMI-CEC function on the Sony set to OFF as that often causes problems on other brands (Samsungs especially).

All CEC are turned off for all devices. I tried to hold the ps3 power on button for a few seconds and it turned off... turned it back on - same problem.

I hookup the included composite cable to the Sony and changed the PS3 output display to 480. It works. Switched it back to HDMI output (via the Denon) - same problem.

I'm about to give up using this PS3...

I'm about to try that next. I had the Pana plasma connected to the Denon before and it worked fine with my Popcornhour... It's now in another room so I have to move the Denon and the PS3 to make the test.

I hope that test will fail because I already wall mounted the Sony

Actually, I'm not going to do this test. I have tried it with a 24" PC monitor and same problem.

Ok, got my Christmas wish and have a Harmony One in my hand!

Current set-up:
PS3 to DVD/HDP
Dish DVR to TV/CBL
TV to Out/Monitor

Remote set up just fine and I added all four devices.

When we watch TV we usually don't turn on the Denon, so commands are TV and DVR. For movies and PS3 games everything goes through Denon so it's TV, Denon and PS3.

Current problem:
When I I attempt to turn on the TV sequence after watching a movie, I get nothing because the Denon is still on PS3, so I have to use Denon remote and push the TV/CBL button to push it thorugh.

Before My Harmony I always made sure I turned the Denon off first so it switched to TV speakers, then turned off the PS3 so if the wife went to watch TV it would appear and she wouldn't be calling me at work.

Is there a way for me to fix the sequence?

Thanks,
Todd

You've got a couple ways to accomplish what you're after .... the easiest being simply to connect the HDMI cable from the DVR to the TV along with an optical/coax cable from the DVR to the 2309 for when you want to use the surround speakers. That way the wife can turn on the TV without having to turn on the 2309 at all.

The other way, is using HDMI Control set to ON as you are doing now in order to pass the TV through while the 2309 is in Standby. In order for this to work the TV source must always be the last source selected before the 2309 is placed into Standby. So just program the steps into the Harmony to select the TV source prior to placing it in Standby and you should be good to go.

JD,
Thanks for the tips....makes sense to add another step to the shut down procedure.

Does using the optical/coax hurt pic quality at all?
