I hooked my Direct TV up to the 2309 using optical cable and then hooked up the D* by HDMI to my Sony TV. I suggest that you do not dump the 2309 but use optical cable to handle the audio and use the HDMI directly from blu ray to tv.
When one of my 2 Sony TV HDMI ports got mashed and would no longer work, I simply switched the inputs on the D* to the red, blue, green and red, yellow audio into the matching inputs on the Sony. Then I was still able to hook my blu ray through the HDP input on the Denon and then still use HDMI output to the one good HDMI input on the Sony.
The reason I did not hook up D* directly to the Denon is so wife could watch her shows and news without having to go through the Denon but if D* had a 5-1 broadcast, using my harmony remote, could with a one button push switch inputs on the sony and engage the Denon for superior sound at the same time blocking out the speakers on the Sony. Batpig had links to programing the 2309 for the harmony remote which on my remote is 13 pages long. I suggest you do the same with your blu ray player as I did with D*. This receiver has been good to me
