I would like to thank Brian for the post about the 889 at CC for 499.99. I went and got one last week. I spent the weekend setting it up and testing it out.

I have run the Audyssey for the 6 seating positions but I think i have a problem.

How do i decrease the volume to my Surround speaks? I am running 5.1 setup. They are set to size small. They are putting out more sounds than my center channel.
I have DV and DEQ on but still hard to hear the voices talking in like football games, but the surrounds are loud.

My old Denon I could adjust the volumes of each of them to help out with the balanced.

I was well on my way of an Onkyo 606, having owned two previous Onkyos and liked both of them, very much. The big seller for them is the price/feature. With the big downside of their heat issue.

Soon I will have a better receiver, Dynamic Volume and no heat issue!

Can anyone please confirm this receiver does HDMI video pass-thru even if it's decoding the HDMI audio? I'm a gamer and any video lag from processing the HDMI video is unacceptable. An answer like "I don't feel any lag" is not sufficient. It not overlaying GUI graphics on HDMI sources is a good sign, but I need to know for sure.

Basically I want it to process the audio and not touch the video. I get scared when I read posts about 1080p/24 and x.v color space, blah blah. Why should ANY of that matter if it's just a repeater...? Makes me suspicious.

From reading the manual, it appears that if I want to use the scaler to upscale my Comcast DVR, it will have to be hooked up through component?

I just went to my local CC (in Richmond, VA). It came up at $799 in the computer and they refused to price match another CC on the other side of the country. Anyone have any tips?

being that CC's HQ is in Richmond, I know a few guys who work at the corp office. I may call one of them to see what the official policy is about matching other stores.

My son had no issues on this $499 CC deal on the Denon 889 in Minneapolis today. Store first checked web and came up with $799- explained this is an in store price- entered their system- apparently by another method-- and it did come up $499. I live 100 miles distant and they are shipping it to me free of additional charge. Could not get them to go for 10% off coupon as store reports this is a sale item. Still feels like a great deal regardless-- 30 day return if I am not satisfied.

I read about CC and ran 30 miles to the nearest one and see if they had an 889 for the $499 price. I got there 15 mins before close and had the guy pull it up and order me one. What a great deal! Thanks

I don't understand - how can different stores see different prices in the "system"? I went yesterday and saw him look up the "internal price" and it was $799?

To add to this question...if I leave the DVR hooked up via components, should I run the audio through optical?

I was able to find a CC who let me special order the AVR-889 for the $499 but they said shipping it to my home would be $55 so I opted for the instore pickup but they werent very clear when they may get that in and gave me no way to check other then, I should be getting a call sometime next week.

Any more insight on CC special orders? Someone else mentioned free UPS ground shipping.

anybody had any luck in southern california or orange county CC? I went to a CC in foothill ranch (lake forest) and they said the price is $799. What do I have to tell them to get $499? thanks.

Why is this deal so bizarrely random? I dropped by a local Illinois CC & not only did they have have the same $499 deal on the 889, they had a shelf tag up with the sale price of $499 shown. The sale end date listed is October 4th, which I think has been mentioned here before. So, good until the new ad starts on this coming Sunday.

I actually went there looking to see if there was any kind of unannounced deal on the 789, which the Denon website lists as being a bit smaller in physical size (height) than the 889, something I would have preferred (even though the 789 is shorted on a couple features; 1 less hdmi & no phono). After measuring the two, turns out the two models are exactly the same dimension. Chalk it up as yet another Denon website error.

Come on really? You would really alert cooperate to what is obviously a price mistake just because you weren't able to get in on the deal? Wow.

Either you're really dense or just vindictive that you didn't get one.

How I approached the floor salespeople was...

"Hi, I'm curious if you have the Denon AVR-889 in stock, and if so how much you are selling it for?" The salesperson would log onto a kiosk, try to bring up the item and if it showed up on their screen, I'd see the price. Note, ALL three people that I asked, went to the internal sales system, not the web as a first try. If it's listed as $799 on the internal system, I sincerely doubt that you'll get it for $499. Just try another store and keep your fingers crossed. It took me 3 stores to purchase one at $499.

Anyone using this receiver with the Def Tech speakers?

I saw the sale price of the 888 for $499 but not the 889. They didn't even have a tag for that up. Are you sure it wasn't the 888 that was on sale? Could someone take a picture?

Also, anyone know when to expect their order to come in? I'm hesitant to call about it and for someone to see the price.

They gave me FREE FedEx Ground shipping (They called it Free Basic Shipping) when I ordered mine in store.

This thread title is "2309CI/889". Does this mean that they are the same receiver with different numbers stamped onto them?
I did a compare on the denon website and thats what it seemed to be.....
why would they bother?

This is very strange. Couple of times I powered on my 889, it stayed at DVD and then a few seconds later switched itself to TV/CBL; most other times when I turn it on it immediately goes to TV/CBL.

Did anyone find out why it is doing this? I'm wondering if it has anything to do with HDMI-CEC. Didn't get a chance to mess with those settings yet.

Problem solved. It is caused by HDMI-CEC. When I switch input on my TV to the TV tuner, the receiver is changed to TV/CBL. According to the manual, the 889's volume can be controlled by the TV, that I haven't seen work. Oh well I'll leave HDMI-CEC off.

They have two lines for the custom installation stores and the other for the retail chains... just a different marketing scheme. I really dont see a point either.

AFAIK: Denon used to only sell its receivers through non-big box shops (no CC, BB, etc). The were targeting a high end market. These resellers often times do custom installations, Home integration, and home theaters. Over time, Denon realized that there is a market for the big-box resellers too. Not wanting to give up the specialized shops, they sell the 2 different models. This allows them to include a few tweaky features in the xxxxCI models designed for custom installations (ci). Also, it helps protect those specialized dealers from having to price match the big-box retailers - since the models are 97% similar but not identical.

Hmm. You know, it's possible.. it was in a dark room and I didn't have my reading glasses with me. I'll see if I can get back there today or tomorrow and double check.

I've called numerous So Cal stores and all are listing the 749.99 price at this point. I can't believe I missed seeing the sale.

When i went to the store i saw the 888 on sale for $499. I went and asked about the 889 and was told they didn't have one. I then asked if he could order one and he checked and said yes and gave me the $499 price. Shipped free, he said in about 6-10 days. I double checked my reciept and yes it was the 889!

NO, I am not retarded. What I am going to ask is the question with out the reference. In other words, I was going to ask about matching stores - not anything about the denon.

There is a huge difference between "alerting cooperate" and knowing someone that works there and privately asking that person a question.
