Yamaha V663 and PS3 only thread....

I thought I'd start this thread for us dazed and confused people with this combo. I do have initial impressions, but I need more time with the OSD and calibration of both components. My first concern is that I do not get DTS-MA thru HDMI to the V663, atleast I don't THINK I am. It just reads "PCM" on the Yamaha display when in "Straight" mode. I also need help with the crappy OSD that yamaha has to set xover settings and such...THAT i will try to do on my own with the manual.

Anyway, this thread will hopefully shed some light between the V663 and PS3....thanks!

1) Load up a Bluray with DTS-HD MA track and select it from the menu
2) Hit the Triangle button on your PS3 controller
3) Hit display icon to show what audio codec your AVR is playing (if you really must know)

(or if you have the PS3 BT remote, skip step 2 and just hit display)

Its all been said before, multiple times,
no need for another thread.

The PS3 can only send de-coded DTS-HD MA and TrueHD as PCM,
so that's ALL your AVR will ever show on its display.

The sound is still lossless , its just decoded in the player instead of the AVR.

Audio via HDMI set PS3 to PCM and forget about it, period.
For video settings, it's more dependent on your display, but there is a FAQ in the PS3 section for that,
its been beaten to death in the 663 thread every 4 or 5 pages.

Since your search button doesn't work, I used mine

This information is repeated multiple times in both the 663 and PS3 and Bluray player threads. I think there's also some PS3 FAQs floating around that explain the audio via MPCM thing.

Note that the RX-V663 only passes limited range video over HDMI. You should not change the PS3's video range settings when using HDMI, and all will be well. You may run into issues trying to play a test disc with Blacker than Black patterns through the 663. In general, though, this clipping thing should not effect you. Yamaha claims it's not a bug.

I know this combo has been beaten to death, I probably shouldn't have started a new thread. I guess there's just too much info/problems/concerns in multiple threads with this setup. Right now I'm dissapointed in the SQ of the lossless HD Sound schemes. It's only been a couple of days, so I'm not giving up on this rcvr yet. Thanks for your insight, Michael......

If that's the case, there are 3 things happening:

1. Your receiver is busted.
2. Your speakers suck/blown
3. Your hearing is gone.

To me, the difference between Dolby 448 vs lossless is has more "WOW" effect than SD to HD.

The V663 is an excellent sounding receiver.

Several industry professionals stoutly disagree with you. nice hyperbole though.

Option 4 is you didn't reconfigure your PS3 audio settings after you got your receiver in which case you'll only get 2 channel PCM.

nice stab there, but option 4 seems to be the most likely
kplex,
where in the PS3 do you setup PCM to get all 8 channels????

Settings | Sound Settings | Audio Output Settings

Select HDMI then automatic configuration.

I've got all the settings right in the PS3, the only thing is that 7.1 PCM 48khz and other parameters are in BLACK...meaning I can't change them. What's this all about? THATS why I'm just seeing 5.1 DTS HD MA in Master and Commander BD....any thoughts??????

Which one is it set to and what ones will it let you choose?

I'm beginning to understand (i think) about the PS3...It will only allow certain surround and stereo perameters and thus I'm getting the option for PCM 7.1 48khz, however it still says "5.1 DTS MA" on the BD. Atleast I am getting some better surround sound now. Maybe Master and Commander doesn't allow 7.1, but I think that is wrong. SO, for the PS3, WHAT SOUND SETTINGS SHOULD I ALLOW to get the full glory of all this new HD Sound?

Master and Commander has a 5.1 soundtrack.

Thanks for the link!
I thought there would be more in 7.1, but I'm sure a lot of the TBA titles will come to fruition.
Going to do some more testing and playing around today, and thanks for helping me out you guys!

My my...do we need a general AVR+PS3 sticky.

Heh..seeing that this thread helped me I thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth. I just hooked up the Yamaha 663 to my old Mutsubishi 65" (only has a DVI connection)rear projection TV with the PS3 as my blu ray player. Works great, and I also hooked up my old oppo (DVI) dvd player to the receiver.

I still need the oppo to view PAL DVDs but once oppo releases their Blu Ray player then I'll upgrade to that. Everything went like it should...made some changes in the scene menu for the oppo. Will use my monoprice hdmi switcher when I get more HD stuff.

I did watch several scenes from my fav blu rays and I was very happy to actually hear the difference since I was fearful that I wouldn't. That was the main reason I upgraded since I loved my old trusty 5.1 receiver. All I can say is that this was a great investment and it has made me love my home theater even more. Now to break (not literally) it in!
