Western Digital 1TB GreenPower HD for 5k?

I searched in the forums for anyone using the Western Digital 1TB GreenPower HD (WD10EACS), but did not come up with any experiences. Since this is a 5400rpm drive, it would seem like it would be perfect for a DVR. Does the 16MB cache and the fact that it's newer kill the chances for it to work in a 5k series RTV?

Thanks,

That puppy is SATA, while the Replay has PATA connectors. There has been an off and on hypothetical discussion of using an SATA>PATA adapter to connect such a beast to a Replay, but nobody has reported success doing so. You could purchase the pieces and provide us a with a field test report!

Why would you want a 1TB drive in a replay? If it is even half full your guide will be anemic.

I remember reading on this forum that someone with a 750GB Seagate in his RTV was doing well with it, so I thought that this drive might also perform well (if the SATA/PATA barrier can be overcome).

I'm ordering a new 1TB WD GP drive for my media server and am thinking about trying it out in my 5x RTV first. Is there a recommended SATA-to-PATA adapter that has a good shot of working? Also, if I perform this experiment, how safe will the shows in my original RTV drive be? I won't be doing anything to the drive but putting it in safe temporary location (unless the new drive works ). Will just the attempt of installing a new drive screw up the way the old drive will work in the RTV?

I'm relatively new at this RTV hacking. I just replaced my mother-in-law's corrupt RTV hard drive with a new (used) 250GB Maxtor drive, but I haven't yet been able to recover the shows from the original drive. I don't want that to happen again with my own personal RTV. I would receive negative WAF points for life if I were to lose my wife's shows.

Thanks,
jawgee

If you really want to be safe, put the 1TB drive in a PC and use DVA to access the shows.

From what I recall in the past as well, if you put it in the PC, partition it, and run separate DVA instances for each partition, as it helps mitigate the anemic menu issues when accessing dva from a replaytv.
