As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have been using 51FD since last April mostly on listening to CD. Since I sent that unit to Pio for service, I was looking for a backup, mainly 51FD. Since I couldn't find one at BB or any other authorized places at reasonable price, I could able locate one 05FD new at good price. Two days back connected that unit to my existing system (B&W 683 fronts, ML Grotto sub, Yami 1800 receiver, Shunyata Diamondback Platinum power cable fed from Monster 3600 mkII - and all analog cables were purchased with mid and high frequency clarity in mind).

I used the same songs that I had been listening on 51FD with 05FD. First impression was that treble were more extended than 51FD. Bass was little tighter than 51FD. So, as many as you I too was surprised to find that considering the fact 51FD and 05FD share more common components as I understand. So, I listened more songs to find what I heard first in correct!.

This is a pleasant surprise to me and I am very happy about it. Anyone observed the same results?. I am just curious.........

Edit : I forgot to mention that 05FD produces an excellent soundstage as I myself was confused one time to believe that vocals were coming from center speaker. That means, I configured wrongly to let Yami 1800 do 5.1 DSP. So, I went all the way close to (1 feet away from front) to realize that really center is off and only two fronts were doing it's work!. It is hard to believe, but that's what at least I experienced.

my 05 and two 51's perform identically in every single way, no perceived audio or video quality differences at all. The 05 is all Japan. One 51 is Malaysian built with a made in China drive. The other 51 is all Japan.

Other than cosmetics, I didn't expect differences and confirmed there aren't any. Very happy with these units.

I spent the weekend calibrating my 5020FD display with a new i1 Pro spectrophotometer and color HCFR software. A properly calibrated 5020 will put out a ruler flat gamma of 2.1 which is considered on the low end. Unfortunately nothing can be done within the display to change it. Well luckily the 51FD has gamma adjustment controls and bumping it one notch to the left gave it just the right amount of boost this set needs as shown below.

Before Gamma curve. 2.1 but flat.

With gamma boost from 51FD (1 click left)

No black crush as tested with multiple pluge patters from S&M and DVE. I watched Deja Vu on Saturday and the PQ was exquisite.

Unfortunately the Oppo and PS3 lack these gamma controls so the 51FD has just become my reference BD player for critical watching.

That's what I thought would happen when I start listening to 05FD. I never assumed that 05FD is going to give me better 2-ch audio listening experience over 51FD. For that matter, I would've gone with 09FD if I had enough cash to burn.

However, my real life experience is different. It is hard to believe. I, generally have a good ear for detailed music listening. I read the Q&A section in Pio web site on difference between 51FD & 05FD and the last point caught my eyes ; "Copper Screws and Hand Turned Power Supply . Since I am using after market power cord (Shunyata Diamondback Platinum power cable), could that have caused such differences with the hand tuned power supply???. I don't know. But, all I can say (refer to one of my old posting) is that when I introduced that power cable to 51FD, after about a week or so, I started hearing more detailed treble and bass. But with 05FD, it is more extended.

Did you turn the Energy SAVE feature OFF?

If not it will screw up the gamma.

Yes, energy save and room light sensor sensor are OFF.

Old issue, but is there any chance Pioneer could get a firmware upgrade to get the improperly flagged Die Hard 2 MA track to play when sent bitstream out for external decoding in a receiver. They implemented this as a DTS HD HRA track by mistake so most receivers to include my SC-05 will not pick it up or output any sound. Interestingly many players have simply offered a firmware fix for the issue to include Panasonic and Oppo.

While I am on the topic of firmware fixes hopefully Pioneer optimizes the menus for the grindhouse blurays next FW. I emailed Pioneer on this and got no response and e-mailed Chris Walker long ago on this and got nothing there either.

It may be more productive to call Pioneer support and report the problems. If Pioneer monitors this thread they may already know of it, but this thread grows so rapidly just about anything in it could be missed. As for email, it unfortunately just isn't as reliable as we'd like it to be.

I've burned all the other firmware updates with no problem, but with this 137 version I keep getting "DATA DISC" on the front of the player....What the heck am I doing wrong?...
dogone,

If you're like me, the firmware updates are just infrequent enough so that I'm not totally sure that I'm doing it right each time.

Back to your question, I think it has something to do with how you burn an ISO file.

This may seem like a stupid question, but I just purchased my 51fd and I'm trying to figure out why my receiver (Yamaha RX-V663) is only reading 2 channels for every dvd/blu-ray I'm putting in. Am I missing something?

There are 3 ways to get the audio to the receiver. HDMI, toslinc, analog. Which are you using?

Do a factory reset and start from scratch. From the front panel, hold down stop and tap the power button.

@erkq: Hdmi. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

@wrinkle free; will that mean I'll have to re update the firmware? I purchased this at best buy open box ($109!!) and they updated the firmware to 1.32...

Might as well update FW to 1.37. Download and burn the iso from Pioneer's site. Then do a factory reset.

I have updated the firmware every time offered, but have never done a factory reset (and have had no problem). I don't think it's needed unless you do have a problem (if it was needed, it would be in the directions from Pioneer).

He had a problem. The conversation spanned several posts.

Are you burning the firmware update as an image file? If not, it will show up on the disc as an .iso file (and thus "DATA DISC").

Is there a reason that I can't get discs to resume from the point I stopped them? A DVD will do it but not a blu-ray disc. I have the latest firmware version and didn't see a settining in the menu for this unless I missed it.

if a blu-ray uses Java, which most of the new ones do, it's by design that you can't resume it - on any system, even the PS3. Sucks.

Some of them allow resume, if they don't have a "loading" screen
