I just received December issue of S & V magazine. They reviewed the 05. Overall, it is probably the most positive reviews of the player to date, but with the usual concerns (lack of Bd live 2.0, price, Dts-ma out of the box).

What I found most interesting was that they said SD playback was excellent. It passed most of their HQV torture tests and made even their marginal-quality transfers look crisp and presentable. I have always said this of the SD playback of this player in my system. I have never seen my familiar sd movies look so good! The same movies going thru either the reon processor in my receiver or played back on my Toshiba XA2 with the reon, do not look as nice as the 05's own processor. I am only stating what I see. My calibrator (umr) agreed with this and suggested that I let the 05 do the upscaling. This player seems to be back on track as the best Blu-ray player currently available.
Is it possible that the 05 upscales better than the 51?

I doubt it, but it's not impossible. Same hardware and same firmware used on both platforms. The only way it could differ is if the FW was set up to detect what player it was in and used a crippled algorithm for upscaling in the 51.

That would be really, really silly though.

Good news about the pending 1.17 release, although I've experienced pretty good performance under 1.08b. Curious if there are any image enhancements under 1.17?

One of the leading german on-line AV sites has just tested the european equivalent of the 05FD and gave it 'Reference Status'.

Two negatives:
1. Drive speed (too slow)
2. No 720p output

So 1.17 has made it through legal?

If not, then methinks we have a longer wait.

I love my BDP-05 and have had no problems at all with any disc to date.

I've also been a subscriber to Stereo Review, now Sound and Vision for close to forty years. I dont ever recall reading a negative review in that magazine. They are eternally optomistic about every piece that comes thru their door. Take it for what it's worth. Julian Hirsch was a good man, God rest his soul, but sometime I thought he had tin cans for ears!

when set to professional the 05fd showed every bit of white detail all the way out as far as possible(a good test disc for this is a AVS custom blu-ray test disc)

here is the kicker, when I set the 05fd to memory 1 and dialed down the white level to -1, guess what happened? it crushed some of the upper end

white level performance is perfect on my end when feeding the DVDO VP50pro scaler and leaving the unit set to professional, as as I said when engaging the -1 white adjustment it actually negatively effects the white performance on my system

I am very sensitive to white crush and will not tolerate it, the 05fd is not crushing whites on my end, make of that what you wish

-Gary

Truly bizarre Gary, the mystery deepens.

I think we're far from knowing that for sure. As an example, I see no reason why lowering white levels 1 notch should result in a total shutdown of above white on a display other than the Pioneer as Gary found out. That too doesn't sound like normal behavior.

Late last night I checked white levels using my BD30 and everything was perfect. Same Kuro 111, just a different player. Swapped in the 51 and whites were crushed. It sounds like it is a combination issue between the 51 and 9G Kuros...which just doesn't make any sense.

Precisely Nugga! That's what I was saying before, there is some weird interaction going on here. Plus the fact that I too have had other players hooked up and saw no white crush. Add to that the fact that I don't believe I've ever read the Elite 9g's having white crush issues and you really have to scratch your head.

I actually don't perceive this as an HDMI issue. This definitely seems to be some engineering issue that we haven't gotten to the bottom of...but we will.

Yup! My thoughts precisely. There is just something weird about the 51/05 output in some setups.

First, the firmware update for the BDP-05FD and the BDP-51FD have just been approved and we may see it posted on Pioneer's site as soon as tomorrow. DO NOT CALL PIONEER AS THEY WILL NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS TILL TOMORROW. You heard it first from me on AVS Forum and my information is spot on.

Second, we now up to release "1.17".

1.17 speeds things up greatly and resolved the audio and video compatibility issues that have been reported.

Enjoy!

-Robert

Robert, this would indeed be great news! Now I'm assuming the posted firmware will be 1.17 and not 1.12?

4:4:4 Gary

try 4:2:2

4,4,4 requires more horsepower for negligible benefits per Jim Peterson of Lumagen

Look who's back

Posted today this is good. Sadly I don't have disk issues to really test. Meanwhile, I am anxious to test the speed improvment

So, 1.12 was never released, it got bumped up to 1.17?

Eh, nice.
