need advice: Low Power - Good Frequency range/Response

Hello. First time poster. I would like to ask the members of the board if they can recommend a pair of speakers for me to use on the sides of my 24 inch HD computer monitor. I know what you're thinking, pc monitor? Well that's where I do everything. HD Movies, gaming, music. So what I want is speakers that are:
  • not very powerful (I plan to keep the volume low since I live in Japan, country of serenity and the neighbors would send ninjas to quietly murder me one night)
  • have a high frequency range and very good response (I am an audio enthusiast and used to work with entry level audio production monitors back home so I am used to high quality audio)
  • not very expensive (to use while I am here for a few years)

preferably something japanese which will be easier to find in an auction site etc.
also any ideas for a cheap low power amp with a remote control?

sorry for the tonz of questions. any advice appreciated.

Nick

That's just hilarious!

Btw what speaker brands would you have locally in Japan? Might give people here quicker ideas on what suggestions to make. Indication of budget would also help.

You're looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers and a stereo receiver, right?

Check out the WAF-1's over at the Tweak City Audio Forums as well as the Gizmo 2-channel amp. Otherwise the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 and Swan M10 systems would work very well.

P.S. Gotta watch out for those Ninjas! HA!

Hey nuance thank you very much for your suggestions. I am wondering though, can such small speakers have decent frequency responses? Anywhere I can look up their frequency response graphs?

The JBl stage series bookshelves sound very good, I would reccomend those.

Small speakers can not go low very well (nothing good under 100Hz) but in the mid to high Freq ranges they can be incredible.

Exactly. I have a feeling TCA's Waf-1's will have a very flat FR. As for the others - no clue. I suppose you could e-mail the folks at audio insider and ask about the Swans.

Audioengine 2's seem to get rave reviews. I did have a listen to a pair in a local shop and they are a nice sounding small powered speaker. I may get a pair for the computer.

Not much bass, but what they did reproduce was nice and clean. Of course, the 5's would output more bass if that's desired.

You can get small-ish bookshelves that have great frequency response, but most of them are going to have the capability of going louder.

If you want the system to be quiet, better to get a hefty speaker, and a small amp. Consider a Single-ended triode amp, or a T-amp. Just remember to not overdrive the amp (clipping at the amp-stage can damage your speakers).
