westinghouse backlight problem (one side brighter than the other)

I have a friend with a westinghouse LCD tv. It's a refurb and it recently started having a problem where the backlight on one side is brighter than the other. For instance on an all gray screen, the left side will look grey and it will fade toward black on the right side of the picture. Sometimes the screen will flicker a lot, but powering the tv off then on again usually stops the flickering.

I'm wondering if anyone has any luck repairing this kind of problem. Is it a failing backlight? I seem to read that people have problems with the backlight inverters, but if that were the case here, then the backlight shouldn't work at all, right?

I believe the model is LTV-40W1 if that helps.

Thanks for your help

Does anyone know if LCD tvs typically have multiple backlight lamps? Could it be that there are two and the right side's is just failing?
