Top 5 Movies to Show off Your W5000

I didn't want to hijack the "little test" thread, so I figured I'd make a new one. Considering the noise issue that some people are concerned about, I thought I'd ask which films owners would use as reference quality material to show off their projector. I just purchased the W5000 and am waiting to get it and set things up. Thanks in advance,

Blu Ray, SD or HDDVD? There are threads in the blu ray and hddvd software forums title Picture Quality (PQ) Tier threads that focus on this topic...that should help. Animation is always good to wow an audience (commonly used to cover up weaknesses of display units in retailer showrooms).

Edit: Here's the thread you will need for Blu Ray

Ahh, I should have specified. I have a blu ray player and an hddvd player (in the form of the 360 add-on). I'll check out the blu-ray section - thanks.

Any Pirates of the Caribbean movie in blu ray will be a great source to show off your w5000. Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth are also well done. I've also heard that the Planet Earth series is fantastic in blu ray on a w5000.

Transformers, MI3, Hulk, Hot Fuzz is really crisp, Riddick, TMNT on HDDVD. Any Disney or the New Line movies like Shoot'Em Up.

Transformers does look great in high def.

So far i have seen on W5000 on blu-ray: Earth (BBC), X-men the last stand, 7 years in Tibet, Casino Royal, Batman begins

Superb:
1) Earth (BBC) - This is a WOW, keeps you quiet seeing the magnificent details of scenery and esp. the animal closeups.
2) 7 years in Tibet - Again a wow for detail. Also very bright scenes. Best non documentary movie.

Very good:
1) Casino Royal - seeing the bond ladies in HD makes impression. BC works great in this movie, very deep colours. Not rated as Superb because of the opening in black white. W5000 shows noise in this black-white scene (also with BC off), here you can also see some rainbow effect if you are sensitive to it. Apart from the beginning superb.

Good:
Batman Begins - Yes it has good filmic quality but somehow i have some trouble with the dark scenes. Its difficult to calibrate W5000 to make the dark scenes great. But hey, its way better than i used too.

Bad:
X men the last stand - I bought this blu-ray because actionscenes impressed me on sd dvd. Now on blu-ray its better but it has not the details you see in the movies i mentioned above. This is not due to the W5000. Th equality of the blu-ray is just not so good. Still im sure with this movie your friends will be impressed too.

Another one rarely mentioned is Spy Game. Some closeups lack focus but others are dazzling. Getting old doesn't help a pretty face.

Don't overlook CGI animation titles. Direct to digital transfers, often flawless.

Ratatouille and Cars are reference quality - as you'd expect - with no noise or grain, and utterly superb imagery across the board.

Also excellent are King Kong (Universal) and The Searchers (Warner).
The Searchers is especially noteworthy, as it was shot in Vistavision back in 1956. It would have to rate as the most pristine, razor-sharp catalogue title so far - easily beating 2001.

There are quite a few catalogue titles shot in Vistavision, including North by Northwest and Vertigo, and they should look similarly amazing when they're finally released. A complete listing is here...

Casablanca, shot in 35mm black & white, (HDDVD, with the Blu-ray announced) is also pretty breathtaking - especially considering its vintage.

My best BluRay in IQ is I-Robot...simple superb and a great movie too.

Another great movie with great IQ is 5th Element.

The scenes in the Mayan City in the movie Apocalypto is jaw dropping.

My vote goes to Pirates 1. On a large screen Pirates is better than Casino Royale.
Is it just blue ray? King kong is still the best I have seen on either format.

Turtles for cgi is quite incredible.

Apocalypto is also good because its 16:9 fills almost the entire screen with great picture.

Planet earth was the one my company was most impressed by. I dont know some people complained about noise in it, but for having a noisey projector like the w5000 we seen none on blue ray.

The orphanage is also incredibly razor sharp with some stunning scenes. Scanner darkly is another.

Planet earth had a lot of scenes with noise. But most of it looked amazing.

Planet Earth is 1080i, most likely filmed on an interlaced 1080i video camera. Not the best material to show fast actions.
Planet Earth is a must-have.
It's not consistently sharp, as it was shot on a range of different cameras and formats, under all sorts of conditions. However, its best shots are reference-quality, and the first two minutes is a great demo on its own.

Not sure if it was actually mastered at 1080i or p, but as most of the source footage was progressive to start with, it's of little consequence.

It's also pretty noisy with BrilliantColor is on, and much smoother with it off.

Mission Imposssible 3 is another good one.
The main menu is one of the sharpest things I've seen yet.

Possibly the best film I've seen yet to show off high-contrast, beautifully lit, highly saturated, razor sharp close-ups.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is also beautifully shot, with heaps of high-contrast, colourful gel lighting. Unfortunately, it's only a moderately sharp transfer. Still very good though (and a great movie).

Has anyone tried Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds 3-D Concert?

Available on Blu-ray, it comes with several pairs of polarising glasses for 3D.
Should look pretty astounding on the W5000...

I'm not aware of any other 3D Blu-rays. Damned if I know why they didn't release Beowulf in 3D. What a waste.

Hopefully, will U2-3D will be announced...

If any of you have "Broken Trail" on blu ray, could you pop it in, go to the 2nd chapter (when the 2 cowboys are outside talking about the ranch) and tell me how it looks? This is the first scene I plan to watch on the W5000. That blu ray disc is the best transfer I have ever seen -- and I've seen a lot!

If any projector doesn't show grain (noise) on that scene, it's not working right

Transformers is definitely reference material. From what I've seen from the trailers, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull should be a treat, and Speed Racer should be visually beautiful on the W5000.

Overall the best movies to show off the W5000 are the ones with bright, vivid colors as those are it's strengths. I'd probably avoid darker movies though.

How does that work? You need more than just polarized glasses to make 3D work.

I know how Anaglyphs work, but EH said "polarized", which requires fancy equipment:
http://www.reald.com/index.php/pages/what_is_reald

I seen that they're not sending polarized glasses with the movie, but the "typical" red/blue anaglyph glasses, which result in really bad overall image quality.

I'd have been surprised if they were sending something that requires specialized equipment, or really interested if they figured out a way to do polarized 3D without the special display equipment.

Polarised glasses, which could produce good quality 3d images, cannot be used in a typical home configuration as the display devices cannot emit polarised light. If it is projector setup, two correctly aligned projectors will be needed with polarising filterrs to produce a polarised 3d image.
