PCanywhere alternative for XP & Vista PC's?

Hi,

I posted a thread before the crash & its all gone.

I am curious if there is a PC Anywhere alternative that is lightweight in resources for both a Vista PC & a XP PC.

I think PCAnywhere 12.1 will work on Vista but I think its kind of a resource hog.

Thanks,
Rich

XP & Vista Ultimate come with Remote Desktop server and client built in. (Vista Home Premium only has the client.) Can't get much simpler than that, just turn it on.

Alternatively you can also use VNC (there are a few variations - TightVNC, RealVNC, UltraVNC, etc.).

I really would like to be able to not knock the desktop user out of the session. I wouldnt mind using my laptop as a remote on the HTPC (so to speak) & having to log back in after the RD session isnt a good option.

Can you setup RD to leave the original user in the session (ala PCAnywhere)?

The VNC software solutions seem to all say not for Vista (SP1 issue).

You can run this command to exit the remote desktop session and it will return control back to the local user without having to log back in locally:

tscon.exe RDP-Tcp#0 /dest:console

There is slightly different command for XP:

tscon.exe 0 /dest:console

Try either Remote Admin (www.radmin.com) or Tight VNC.

I will give that a try. For some reason remote desktop always crashes the Geovision CCTV application on my server. Specifically the webcam. I wanted to givev something else a try to see if it helps as i wouldnt mind logging in more often.

To bad PCA 12.0 doesnt work on vista, I find it to be very lightweight.

I use Logmein. Just go to www.logmein.com and register there. Resource usage is negligable, and you can access your computer from computer on the web. The free version is a bit limited (doesn't allow file transfers between the host and remote computer) but it still allows you full control without kicking the current user out of their session. And did I mention it's free?

you can
there is a hack fro both Vista Ultimate and Home premium which allows for multiple concurrent logins to the same computer.

I think i saw it either on missing remote or the green button

it is a registry hack
but it works because both have the same version of the RDP server as server 2k3/2k8
