Best deal I've seen on a new one (I've been watching!) anybody care to speculate what % off in MSRP we can expect on the 2809 when the new models are stocked in store? Don't have to get it for a month or two, but would love to pick one up sooner

6th Avenue sometimes runs a deal where you suggest your own sales price, and they either accept or reject your offer. Check with them to see if the AVR is on their list for this sort of deal. Go for about 40% off list.
6th Ave also will price match Pricegrabber results, whether the company listed on Pricegrabber is an authorized reseller or not. Using that I was able to get my 2809 from 6th Ave (an authorized dealer) a month or so ago for slightly less than the price at Americantv. Right now, though, it looks like that no one is selling the 2809 that cheaply.

i bought mine brand new from my local authorized dealer for $850. they have a policy that if you find a better price locally, they will beat it by 10%. i found another one for $899 locally so they had to beat it (but not by the 10% they advertise!) (i didn't complain!).

but after reading your post about amtv, i just called the dealer and they are refunding me another $100!!!
Tried to PM @ 6th ave and they are OOS, American charges tax in IL so that puts it over budget for me...40% off is about what I'd like to pay...I'll try to be patient-

Do I get a % of that $100?!?! Btw,I'm tracking the shipment and it should be here in the morning.I ordered it 2 days ago! So far I'm very happy with the customer service from AMTV. I feel they are a great company and will buy more stuff from them in the future.

check's in the mail.

i got the new external amps hooked up this afternoon and have done quite a bit of testing.

luxman mx-100

one amp driving the left/right, other amp driving the center channel - not using the other channel of that amp for now.

nevermind the cable mess - that is next.
Those are great looking avr and amps. I don't think I'll get much sleep tonight.I won't be able to set it up for a few days.Gotta work 6 more Braves games before I have the time to do it right.

How did the sound quality change (if at all) with the external amps?

Yeah, judging from the picture that's to the right, there's a wife that may not like that jumble!!!
I also noticed the happy couple, benny. For richer and for poorer SQ....
haha - i snuck the amps in while she was out last night. she has yet to notice them - or at least to say anything about noticing them if she did. she is good like that, though. i picked a good one.

as for the change in sound - listening to music i immediately noticed a wider stage, a warmer midrange, better seperation of instrumentation, and overall bigger sound. very happy with the upgrade!
When watching movies the dialogue coming from the center channel often sounds too bright. I've run the auto-setup twice now and it's still not fixed.

Everything else sounds great. I'm a little confused by this.

Suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
what is the physical location of your center channel? is it really high or low? is it recessed inside a cabinet or shelf?

typically excessive "brightness" will be caused by the Audyssey mic being far "off axis" from the tweeter, causing the Audyssey filters to aggressively boost the highs to compensate for what it "hears". If the center channel is really high or low (relative to the listener's ears), this is likely the issue.
I have in-wall speakers. The center channel is pretty high relative to the front L/R speakers.

Is there a way to manually adjust the center channel without overriding the auto-setup?

Thanks!
By manually adjusting a channel, you are of course overriding the AUTO SETUP original settings, however, if that's what is needed for your personal preference then adjust away. Just press the SEL/ENTER button on the remote and you can adjust the channel level of any speaker. Once adjusted, you'll notice the box around AUDYSSEY on the AVR display goes away to indicate that the original settings are no longer being used. Also, I'm guessing you have physical location limitations, however, ideally the L,C, and R speakers should all be on the same line.

we have our reason. in-wall speakers are problematic to begin with and the fact that is it positioned high up is exacerbating the problem. Audyssey is almost certainly boosting the highs on the center because the "ear level" mic position is far off-axis from the center channel's tweeter.

several nimble users have overcome this issue by repositioning the mic to overcome exceptionally tall/short speaker position. if you are nimble, you can jump in and angle the mic upward for just the center channel measurement (you've got about 15 seconds to work with) so you get better "grazing" incidence.

Great idea. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks!

Don't wait, folks are running out and not re-stocking due to limited supplies! I just got mine in yesterday from Amazon.com's Warehousedeals.com, open box with everything intact in original packing, no cosmetic blemishes. It is such "factory fresh" I even doubt if the box was ever opened. Shipped for $769, mint condition as advertised. Will hook it up this weekend.

Amazon is an authorized Denon dealer and you have a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee which includes shipping back. How can you beat that?

I see their listings change often as the units that were selling when I bought were going for $739 and the one I got, $769. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...condition=used

Good luck
Today I purchased the last 2809 that OneCall had in stock for a hair over 25% off.

I also just purchased a pair of NHT Classic 3 bookshelf speakers (along with the matching 3C center and the 12 sub) on clearance from ListenUp.

I bought the NHTs sight unseen - there are no NHT dealers in my state, let alone my area - so I purchased them on the strength of their reviews alone. Does anyone else have this speaker / receiver combination? How does the amp handle the current draw? (Stereophile says the speakers "will demand a goodly amount of current from the partnering amplifier.")

Thanks in advance for your time.

Actually they have one left for $679 (in Very Good, one level lower than OP's). To those who haven't been following it, Amazon tends to drop the price of these used units about $30 each week. Or at least that they way it's been recently.

I guess the price is dependent on the quality of the stock. Mine was in perfect condition, factory fresh, box was in perfect shape too and for $769 shipped I consider it a steal. I was wary of those priced at lower prices based on the description. The fact that you have a 30 day money back guarantee and a full Denon warranty is icing on the cake. You can find this unit on ebay but I think it is made for sale in Canada or Mexico and you'll only get the vendor's warranty, some vendors giving 1 year, some 2. You then must trust the integrity of the vendor if anything goes wrong.

You got a good price on the Denon. The advantage of buying (even used) from Amazon is that you're dealing with a known entity. At <$700 the 2809s are less than what you see on Audio/Videogon. Plus you get some warranty protection (not sure what the full Denon warranty is but I think the warranty from Warehouse is a year).

Sorry, don't have NHT's but I will offer this reassurance. Those are 8 Ohm, which is good. The not-quite-so-good is that they are only 87 dB sensitivity. Not to worry. All that means is they are not as efficient (loud) at a given wattage (or current). You did not say how big your HT room is, or if you normally listen to heavy metal at "rave" volumes but if we assume you would not have gotten those speakers for a DJ gig in the Bat Cave, then I'd say that the 2809 has more than enough juice for them and should in fact approach ass kicking capability.

Thanks for responding, SoundofMind. My living room is 15' x 12'. I guess this is considered "small" or "medium" but there is no wall separating the adjacent kitchen which measures 12' x 12'. (Is this whats considered an "open" floorplan?) I actually do like to crank the volume on metal or techno on occasion. My concern stems from the Stereophile review / measurements stating that the sensitivity is "significantly lower both than average and than specified, at an estimated 83dB(B)/2.83V/m".

(As an aside: Does anyone have a primer on how to interpret impedance and phase graphs?)

Well, I should be getting them in about a week. ListenUp seems to have a pretty liberal 30-day return policy. If I don't like them, I suppose I can just return them.

I have done several searches but have been unable to find out if there is a way to switch between prologicIIx Cinema and music modes without going into the GUI? I would like to set this up on my harmony but can't find a button. Also, what is the best way on the 2809 to matrix to a 7.1 from from a 5.1 Blu-Ray HD audio source? Thanks for the help!
First off, there is no GUI on the 2809, you're referring to the OSD menu. To answer your question though, you cycle through the various DD PLIIx surround modes by pressing the STD button the 2809 remote. Also, if you have a 7.1 setup and are receiving a DD 5.1 source, if in DD PLIIx mode, the 5.1 will automatically be simulated into 7.1.

Thanks, I tried using the STD button and it cycles through DD PLIIx, DTS NEO 6, neural, but does not switch from Cinema to Music.

I see in the manual that it shows it can do DTS-HD or Dolby HD +PLIIx but I don't know how to activate it. I get the Dolby TrueHD and the blue light comes on but don't know how on a 5.1 soundtrack (most I have so far are only 5.1)to expand it to my 7.1 setup. or do I even want to do that with the Dolby TrueHD?
