"the OSD should definitely appear over HDMI.

it's possible your TV doesn't accept 480i over HDMI... check the HDMI setup and make sure the i/p scaler is turned on (A to H) and that the resolution is 480p or higher, or just set it at "Auto"."

I have a Panny 50" Plasma Model TH-50PZ77U, I did not see any adjustments however it does note that it does show 480 over HDMI.

I am running a HDMI Extender over a Cat 6 Line, I do not know if that would make a difference. There is a signal booster on the box, should I consider adjusting that to see if that makes a difference....

FYI....

I adjusted the signal on the HDMI Extender - Receiver, and Wallaaa,

2. I don't know for sure, but it sounds like when you put the PMA-2000 in that mode it is just behaving as a straight amp and the volume will be controlled on the AVR. you'll certainly have to balance your levels of course to make sure the volumes are matched.

3. my understanding is that, with an analog input, the PURE DIRECT mode completely bypasses the digital stages and the AVR is behaving as purely analog amp.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was reading over there and apparently others are using the control aspect for example to have the TV when it is turned on send a signal to the receiver to fire up as well over the hdmi. Any info would be appreciated. I didn't know this functionality existed.

Thanks!

Yes, HDMI-CEC can link devices together, so that the 2809 changes operational mode when a device is enabled/disabled.

Hello, forum newbie and fellow 2809/Pronto TSU7500 remote owner here...

Soapbox, the discretes you posted are very helpful - Thank you for doing so. By chance do you have discretes for 5/7 channel stereo or any of the surround modes? With the same source (Dish Sat) I often alternate between TV, movie, and music and need to switch sound modes accordingly.

I noticed that a lot of the Denon remote codes seem to be toggles that move through multiple settings, rather than discretes.

Appreciate it.

Let me know if any don't work (I may have transposed something wrong in converting them from K-Code or Denon-Sharp).

Some commands toggle as well. I can do all the individual DSP formats (Rock Arena, Jazz Club, etc) but I almost never use them ... if you want the discretes I can generate them. There are no discretes (as far as I know) for each Audyssey Mode or for turning Cinema EQ on or off.

I understand that the Denon "CI" AV receivers have some kind of crippling designed into them that requires hiring a professional with special equipment or codes to fully activate all the features. What features would I be missing in the 2809CI if I don't hire such an individual?

would it be worth it to upgrade to the 2809 in my case? I have an old Yamaha rx-v530, which is at least a five year old receiver. My speakers were, at the time, ~$300 speakers from Klipsch and they're about the same age.

I mostly play console and computer games and I wondered if the upgrade to the denon would be noticeable at all or if I really don't need to worry about it.

The 2 way RS-232 port is used as a bridge between Denon receivers and high-end control systems. Custom Integration (CI) allows installers to lock out certain functions and disable the use of the IR remote for example so that customers do not accidentally re-configure key audio/video settings and parameters. A another example is that you have access to a special Input Source Renaming function that allows installers to re-name components in an integrated system (for example, instead of calling a connected component simply "DVD player," installers may re-name it "Denon DVD-2930CI").

Your not missing anything.

If you using the receiver for just console and computer games then no advantage.

If you are using the receiver as the nexus of your home entertainment system then moving to a 2809 gives you many modern features that are missing on your older receiver as well as a large step up in amp performance and audio signal processing.

Are you planning any other changes to the system besides considering a new receiver? Why are you considering the 2809 over some of the less expensive Denon models? (1909 or 2309)

I dont know, thats what I was hoping to learn. My receiver is a nexus, it connects my consoles, computer, dvd player, cable box, hdtv to my 5.1 set of speakers. Like I said I dont know their particular model names but they are 6 year old Klipsch models and they cost $400 each when new.

Im hoping to get better sound quality and better surround effects for my games. The autoadjust from the 2089 looks very helpful and so does the HDMI inputs, which would reduce a LOT of cable clutter.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your wisdom.

I finally got my 2809 setup and ran the auto setup. It has the fronts as large and the bass is too soft for my liking. I know I can go in a do a manual but then I loose the Dynamic EQ and Dynamic volume. Is there anyway to change the audyssey setting and have the receiver use them?

A another example is that you have access to a special Input Source Renaming function that allows installers to re-name components in an integrated system (for example, instead of calling a connected component simply "DVD player," installers may re-name it "Denon DVD-2930CI").

Your not missing anything.

So I can't rename the sources without the special equipment or codes? That's one feature I use on my existing receiver and I would miss it if I can't do it myself.

OK, now I realize the 989 is practically the same as the 2809, with the features I want but without having the "CI" concerns, so the 989 will go on my short list.

It's quite easy to rename the inputs on the receiver from the user menu.

Node - four HDMI inputs, upconverting of the analog inputs to HDMI out, the Audyssey auto speaker adjust, and a few other reasons where why I upgraded my older Yamaha amp to the 2809.

Soapbox, I spent the morning yesterday copying all of these codes into my Pronto and then testing each one. All codes appear to be working as specified. Thank you again.

If you want to rename the inputs, its very easy, see page 38 of users manual.

The earlier response was to cover the fact that CI didn't represent crippling of functions, but using the RS-232 port to also setup functions for interfacing with high-end control systems. You can control everything on the 2809 receiver.

I'd get the 2809 over the 989 as its physical appearance is better and the CI functionality does not effect you. You have to realize that the 2309CI, 2809CI, 3808CI, 4308CI, 5308CI models are all part of the Denon custom integration family, and none of them are crippled.

Thanks for clarifying. It's just that I'm wary of products these days that involve having to pay a professional to do something with it. They do it with cars (you now need a special computer with secret codes), and computer hardware and software. They take away functionality from the common customer and you have to pay somebody else (or do some hacking tricks) to enable that functionality. So I'll keep the 2809 in mind, if the "CI" is not taking away anything from Joe Average.

I am setting up my 2809-CI, and have HDMI from the receiver to my Panny 50" Plasma, and have noticed some issues with Analog Display being inconsistent...

I am using a HDMI Cat 5 extender, which I am using shielded CAT 6 line, feeding the Extenders Transmitter and Reciever for the HDMI Extender.

The HDMI Connection from my DishNetwork receiver to my AVR works fine, however the Problem is when I get into the Analog connections going through the AVR.

On the HDMI extenders Receiver, there is a gain adjustment (0-7).

When I try to get the AVR Menu to Display on the I can adjust the HDMI "gain" usually between (0-1) and get it to display. However If I turn the AVR On/Off, then when it comes back on, the Menu is lost and if I fiddle with the "Gain" Adjustment I can get it back.

With the WII, I am using Analog connections, and have the same problem, I noticed that the sound is not a problem coming back after turning it On/Off, its always the Video, again fiddling with the "Gain" gets both Audio and Video going.

1) Are there any settings on the AVR that I need to address to help this situation

2) Should running a HDMI cable vs. the Extender be considered, Sat is working fine both Audio and Video

3) Should I go back to running Component connections from the AVR to get the Menu for the AVR to display on the Plasma (I was trying to avoid this to prevent having to switch sources on the Plasma)

Essentially, I was hoping to run everything through the AVR with only 1 HDMI to the Plasma.

However I do have Component, and a Coax, and 2 Cat 5 lines Hardwired from my AV Cabinet to the back of the Flat Panel...

Wewww....

Enough for Now.....

if you already have a component cable hardwired to the display, there is no reason to only use the one HDMI connection to the monitor. HDMI is real finicky especially over longer runs, as you have discovered, and there is actually some very slight signal degradation on the analog>digital transcode.

Simply plug in the component cables to the component monitor output of the 2809, and use the analog monitor output for all analog sources and the hdmi output for digital sources. That's how my setup works.

The convenience of the 1-cable thing is sort of nullified in your case because you already have the cable run in your installation.

Hi all: I'm trying to decide between the AVR-2809CI and the Sony STR-DA3400ES, which are both right at the same price point. It looks to me like the Denon has more features and is more powerful, but I wonder how much the Sony's build quality and 5-year warranty should matter? Also, I believe the Sony's GUI is better. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you do consider using a long HDMI cable, these guys seem to have what you need:

BJC Belden Series-1 Bonded-Pair Cable: Best for Long Runs
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/...bles/index.htm

They claim to have run the series-1 cable 125 feet with a 1080p source with no signal degradation. I don't think my whole house is 125 feet across.

Denon receivers just last, ask other Denon owners here at AVSforum. Denon AVR's come with a 2 year warranty, and via some credit cards warranty manager you can make 3 years warranty.

Sony offering 5 years is just a gimmick, as most problems show up immediately otherwise your receiver should last years. You gotta wonder why they are pitching a 5 year warranty now....past problems?

The STR-DA3400ES offers HDMI to HDMI scaling which the AVR-2809 lacks which is why they can offer a graphic GUI. Most receivers still use less pretty icon and text GUI to do the same functions. Once you have set up the functionality via the 2809 interface, then you won't be looking at it much.

Note most people don't use the internal video scaling either, rather they rely on better gear externally that utilize better deinterlacing/scaler's chip sets so the 2809 is used just as a HDMI repeater.

My situation is just the opposite. I have a grouchy neighbor who lives in the unit below me. When he is gone there is no problem. Is there a way that I can either change the speaker setting to small or do a manual adjust and still be able to use the Dynamic Volume?

Still looking for an answer. So will upgrading from my rx-v530 to the 2809 allow me to have better sound due to the updated features or would it just be mostly just convenience.

Do you have a subwoofer? If yes, is it on a subdude or something similar to isolate it from mechanically vibrating the floor?

What is your floor made of, wood? If it's wood he'll probably still hear the bass, unless there is concrete or a thick layer of soundproofing below it. If it's concrete, the subdude may solve the problem except when you play it loud.

The Audyssey is probably the only thing in the 2809 that is likely to improve the sound over what you already have. The rest of it is just features for your convenience ... HDMI, more digital audio inputs, etc. If you have Blu-Ray or SACD or DVD-Audio, you'll be able to transmit the high-resolution sound digitally via HDMI (but note that some players won't transmit SACD or DVD-Audio over HDMI).
