i have seen the light...bye bye bose, hello... ???

i thought i had gotten a great deal on my home theatre setup...i bought the yamaha htr 6080 receiver for $500 (+ tax) cdn, and picked up a set of Bose Acoustimass 10 Series IV speakers for $800 (+ tax)...lo and behold, apparently my speakers suck (according to the threads on here). lucky for me, they're still in the box. i'm going to go back to future shop sometime this week and return them, and i'm looking to either pick up something to replace them. i definitely don't want to spend more then $800-$1000, so what would you reccomend? i'll be putting them up in my living room, which is 15 feet by 17 feet and probably 20 feet high...what attracted me to the bose in the first place was their small size and wall mount capability (i know, stupid) - but in my case, i have a young nephew who is often over, and i didn't want him knocking over my speakers while he careens around. anyways, back on topic - what's the best package to put together from here and still be in budget? ideally, by downgrading from the bose name, i'd look to save a few bucks too.

i was thinking of either the Energy Take Classic 5.1, Polk RM6750, Polk RM85FS, or Harmon Kardon HKTS15

what's the best bang for the buck, or is there something else I should be looking at (preferably form futureshop)?

thanks!

Hi Karam - I'd say @ FS your best bet would be the Energy Take series.

Did you audition any of these, or did you just buy what the salesman told you to buy? It's great to get advice and all, and I do seek out opinions here all the time, as there are 100's, thousands, OK, one or two people here that really know their stuff and can give you good advice.

But make no mistake, advice is all it is. You need to go listen to various setups and buy what YOU like. Preferrably all in the same room if possible. Most FS's I know have the "Speaker" room and though not ideal will give you a decent idea of what each of the brands sound like.

What about the sub???? And don't get that confused with the ah, er , ahem, Bose "Bass Module" (which is NOT a sub btw). For H/T you definitely need one of those. If that's part of your $1000 budget, wait for a sale from FS who sometimes let subs go at crazy prices.

well, in general there alot of great speakers. look for something efficient that meets your aesthetic need. i would go with at least a 5 inch mid with a tweeter. that will give you good mid. i like the bose 201's, but i also like alot of others. the center "can" but doesnt have to be an exact copy of the others. i find you get a great even mix if they all are the same exact speaker.

all 4 of those alternative packages i looked at come with subs i believe.

i really wish i had come on here about a week ago...buying bose just seemed to make the most sense...i thought i was buying a mercedes for toyota prices, when i was really just getting a kia. i heard the bose system in the store, i thought it sounded great, but again, we weren't in that speaker room, and i took the sales person at their word...at least my receiver seems to be decent (i hope?). anyways, thanks again for your input.

Hey There -

Hopefully, I can throw you in the right direction.

If you want to stay with the Bose Size but get some pretty awesome sound (Mind you, I'm talking about Future Shop inventory, so this is not the end all and be all) - I would say go with the Energy Custom Audio package.

It has -

Yamaha 6160 (Also known as the 663, so you'll get high def audio which you won't with the 6080)
4 x Energy RC Mini's
1 x Energy RC Mini Centre
1 x Energy 8" Sub

I don't think that I can talk price here but pack up the amp and everything and it will be about 2-3 hundred more than you paid for the "Bose" system.

Hope that helps,

C&P

thanks...but those speakers still seem too big for what i'm looking for...i'd be fine with that package if it was going in my basement, but i want something a bit more discrete in my living room. what do you think of the KEF 5.1 Home Theatre Speaker System (KHT2005B) or Mirage 5.1 Channel Speaker Sound System NANOSYSTM?

You can mount any lightweight bookshelf speaker high up on a wall and it won't fall off, there are plenty of entry level bookshelves from KLH, Sony, Infinity , polk and yamaha that arent too heavy to mount with a wall-ceiling mount bracket, high up and out of the way of the child.

Try the Mordaunt-Short 900i series. For $800 you can even get 2 pairs of floorstanders for the front and surrounds in addition to the usual sub and center. Those Yamaha NS series slim towers are good too.

Karam, when choosing speakers for your application, there are some things you really need to be aware of. The speaker packages you've been looking at are designed for smaller spaces. If your 15 X 17 room had 8 ft. ceilings, those packages would be at their upper limit, in terms of performance. With 15 ft. ceilings, you're evectively doubling the space, therefore, the speaker packages you've been considering will, most likely, sound anemic and lifeless.

When you turn on your system, what are you hoping to experience? Do you want to feel like you're in a movie theater, or do you just want something better than the speakers in your TV. Do you plan on listening to music, or is this just for movies and TV. I see you have a nephew, do you, or have your thought, of using your system for playing video games? Your responces to these questions will help us, help you, determine what you need to purchase to meet your expectations.

that's a good point about the high ceiling...maybe i do have to reconsider my "small speaker" ideal...

the speakers will just be for music and tv...i'm not looking for something that will blow me away, but i'd like something moderately impressive, definitely better than a HTIB...

i'm not a huge video gamer, other than my nintendo wii which has been turned on about twice in the past year. my nephew won't be at the video game playing stage for at least a few years, so that's not really a concern either.

I'm adding some pics of the room so you can see what I'm working with. We're just moving in this week, so the setup and furniture you see here is gone.

Nice room! A picture is worth a 1000 words... If you hadn't posted these pics, we would not have known that your 15 x 17 room opened up into that nice stairway. When choosing speakers for this space, you need to consider that volume of space as well. It looks like one section of your stairway is about 4 ft. wide, double that at the landing, and you are adding approximately another (8 x 15) 120 sq. ft. So, 15 x 25 x 20 ft. ceilings brings the total volume of your space to about 7500 cubic feet! Considering the speakers you had been looking at are sized for a typical living room/HT of 12 x 15 w/8 ft. ceilings or about 1400 cu. ft. You definitely need to reconsider your choices.

I'm not really sure what kind of speakers would fill that space and be discrete. And I really don't think you will find a 5.1 that will fill that space with your $800 budget. Since you are just moving in, I'm assuming that budget is probably limited and not your highest priority at the moment. Your best bet, with that budget, may be to put a system together in sequential steps rather than all at once. Start with your main speakers, add a sub, then a center and finally the surrounds. For $800 your have lots of choices for your main speakers. If you have any spare time, visit some audio shops or even the big box stores just to see/hear what is available in that price range - just to give you an idea of what you can get for your money. Once you find a sound you like, check back here and we can direct you toward some internet direct, ID, only manufacturers to check out - more bang for your buck.

One other thing to try. Stand in the middle of your room and clap your hands. Listen for an echo or a ringing sound. With all of those bare walls and that hardwood floor, there a good chance your room is going to have similar sound qualities as a gym. You will definitely need to compensate for acoustics. Fortunately, there are some easy decorative steps you can take that will keep your significant other happy. An area rug on the floor and maybe a lovely tapestry (or 3) would help immensely!

You may also want to consider starting another thread with a different title, something like "help fill my large space with sound" and definitely post those pics. You will get more respectful beneficial info if your title doesn't referrence bose.

Have fun, and enjoy the journey!
