ONKYO S6100 (Onkyo 667 [606?] Receiver) unanswered questions and wanted answers

I own the S6100 HTIB. This is not an HTIB forum, i know, but my questions are receiver related and strictly that, so I thought id get better answers here. Here is what I would really appreciate information on:

  1. Are the Onkyo 606 and the Onkyo 667 exactly the same thing? if not, what are the differences?
  2. What level receiver is the 667? 4, 5 or 6? or am I completely off?
  3. I cant find anything in the manual. Does anybody know if this receiver (667 or 606) supports DPLIIx?
  4. Is buying an external cooling fan for my receiver an indispensable step, or merely an extra cautionary measure?

Please take into consideration I am a first time owner, so I might not know as much about this as I probably need to. Thanks a lot, any info or comments are greatly appreciated.

A fan would only be truly necessary if you don't have much room above your receiver or if it was an enclosed area. I have an Onkyo 705 and I bought a little fan to sit on top of it. However it has nothing to do with reports of the Onkyos running hot. I would buy a little fan no matter what brand receiver I had just for good measure. Why not? It's small and you don't hear a thing. Why not take the extra step and keep it cooler than it runs without a fan?

Darkleafer, how has the 6100 been treating you? I took my 667 receiver to get serviced today. HDMI switching issues.

1. No they are not exactly the same receiver, but close. The 667 has A + B speaker terminals, the 606 has Zone 2 instead of Speaker B. With Zone 2 you can listen to a different source than the main room. For instance you can watch a movie in the main area and play the radio or CD in Zone 2. On the 667 you only get the same source on Speaker A and B.

The 606 is also Sirius radio ready, has one extra composite, S-video and audio input.

2. I don't remember what level 4, 5 and 6 mean anymore. Both receivers have 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs, both decode TrueHD and DTS-MA audio.

3. Both receivers have Dolby PLIIx decoding.

4. Doesn't hurt to keep the receiver cool.
