Hey Guys! I've had my SC-07 for several years and have been very pleased with it but just recently started having an issue and I don't know or can't imagine what is causing it or if it is something going wrong in my receiver?
What is happening is that for, mostly just some commercials, the sound is what one might described as sounding extremely muffled. It is like the voices are gone and only the very low part of the voices or commercial come through. And I'm not talking like muffled to a trained ear... I'm talking like muffled to the point it sounds like people are trying to talk through a pillow! Barely understandable.
I've done a lot of troubleshooting on this and have narrowed it down to "something" causing this in the SC-07.
My setup consists of a computer run DVR. When I first noticed this it seemed like only the first part of some commercials would be muffled for a second or two and then the audio would be normal again. Now, it seems like if it happens it is for the entire commercial. What is so weird is that I don't recall this happening at all in any of the actual shows I watch. I'm watching a show and everything is perfect, commercial #1 comes on and muffled, commercial #2 comes on and it has perfect audio, commercial #3 comes on and it is muffled, then show comes back on and it is back to fine. What else I noticed is that this primarily happens when I'm watching NBC! The other networks don't seem to do this or at least not nearly as often.
When it first started doing this I thought it was related to something on my computer DVR but I couldn't find anything odd in the settings on the computer. Plus, I noticed it while watching live Sunday Night Football so I quickly switched over to where just my cable box was going into my SC-07 and the same problem was heard! So, this eliminates the computer DVR because it uses a different type tuner all together.
In my office I have a Logitech 5.1 system with Dolby digital. I thought I'd try to play back the same football game in my office just by playing the recorded file using my office computer. In my office, there is no problem and the audio is not muffled. Same areas of the recording are muffled when played through the SC-07 though. So, it doesn't appear to be related to the audio recording itself but rather something that is happening inside the SC-07.
Here is another odd thing that I noticed at the same time... first off, I'm not an audio expert. I pick different audio settings on the remote until I find one I like and it might stay there for months... I don't even remember what I have used most often over the years I've had my SC-07. But, I do remember that I often used the A.L.C. setting. And this is what is odd... the A.L.C. setting, no matter what I am listening too, sounds very muffled as well and has NO center channel output ever it seems. It never used to be like this because I used it quite a bit. More troubleshooting seemed to show that on these muffled commercials when on a setting other than A.L.C. and swapping back and forth between the A.L.C. setting and any other setting, it sounds the same.
That is what else I discovered... the muffled sound I'm hearing is actually NO CENTER channel at all. When the muffled commercials come on what it seems like is happening is that everything is working correctly except there is NO center channel sound at all. This kinda makes sense because most of the voices and highs come through the center channel. I can't be certain that all that is happening is the elimination of the center channel output but it sure seems like that is what is going on. Then when the actual show comes back on, the center channel starts working again.
I've tried "direct" sound and same thing... program sounds fine and some commercials on NBC are muffled. No difference on Direct. In fact, I have tried pretty much all the different sound options/settings and none of them get rid of the muffled sound. The only thing I notice, like above, is that A.L.C. never sounds right and always has the muffled sound. I also tried watching Hulu via my computer and the sound was muffled for the show as well so I just stopped watching it. It seems like my SC-07 is "broken" for just decoding a certain type of audio stream but can that be possible???
I have called Pioneer tech support and got a rather rude lady who told me to select direct and see what happens and if it didn't work to reset the receiver and if problem still existed to take it in for repair then basically hung up on me.
As a last resort I reset the receiver using the directions in the manual. No difference! ARGH!
So, while it seems far fetched to me that this could be a problem with the receiver that requires taking it in to a service department, I don't know what else to do or try. Have you guys ever heard of anything like this or have any recommendations?
Thanks for reading and sorry this got so long
