Newbie Needs Help With Home Theatre Systems Components

Thread Starter
I want to redo the home theatre system at my house and called a Home Theatre technician for a in home quote and and I just received the quote for everything I want to get done and it totaled up to $5,800. Somebody on a another forum suggest I come to the AVSforum to get better ideas and to to possibly cut my costs.

Basically, I would like a 46" or 50" LCD TV, a quality wall mounted surround sound, a decent receiver, PS3, and I would like HDMI wiring to connect it all and be able to use a RF remote to access all my components outside of the PS3 (I will just use the PS3 wireless controller for that right now) The PS3 will also be used to access music and video files wireless from my home's hub computer on my wireless network.

I would like to mount my TV over my fireplace in a room that's approx. 15' x 15' with 20' high cathedral ceilings.

I really think I could get all of this done for much cheaper than what the techicians quoted me. The techicians pretty much quoted me all high end components which is something I really do not need. I just want to have decent quality while staying within my budget. I have set a budget for this project around $3,500.

Here's the detailed quote I received from the home theatre guys (I am leaning towards a LCD though since I will be playing alot of PS3 games)

PANASONIC 50" HD Professional Series Plasma Display with Video Input Cards and 5 Year Warranty 1,799.99

K2 MOUNTS Tilting Wall Mount for Large Flat Panel Televisions 37"-61" 149.99

YAMAHA 7.1 Digital Home Theater Receiver with HDMI Upconversion, Powered Zone 2, iPod Ready,
XM/Sirius Radio Ready 549.99

PSB Alpha- Mini Satellite Speaker System (2 Pair) 199.99 (Total $398)

PSB Alpha- Mini Satellite Center Channel Speaker 169.99

PSB 10" Powered Subwoofer, 225 Watts 499.99

FURMAN POWER 8 Outlet Audio Video Power Conditioner and Surge Protector 135.00

SPEAKERCRAFT Remote Control Repeater System with Status Feedback 199.99

HARMONY Advanced Universal "One Button" Remote Control with Smart State Technology 199.99

WIREWORLD CHROMA 5- HDMI Digital Audio/Video Cable (5M) 129.95

WIREWORLD CHROMA 5- HDMI Digital Audio/Video Cable (1M) 49.95 (QTY = 2, Total = $99)

WIREWORLD LUNA 5- Subwoofer Audio Cable with Built-In Audio Signal Splitter 37.95

Labor: Custom Installation, Set-Up, Programming, and Full Audio Video Calibration 1,100.00

Total: $5,855

What suggestions do you have regarding the components in which I can achieve decent quailty while staying within my $3,500 budget? (PS3 is not included in the budget, I already have that) And I also will be attempting to install everything myself with the help of a friend or two. The only difficulties I forsee is running two 110 outlets and the hdmi cabling to where the tv will be mounted above the fireplace. I'm an Electrical Engineer by profession so this shouldn't be that difficult for me I hope

The first thing that jumps out to me are the cables.

I paid ~$40 for a 25 foot CL2 rated HDMI cable from monoprice.com and just bought 3 more 6 footers at about ~$4.25 each...

The subwoofer cable should be even cheaper.

Don't let them rip you off on the cables/accessories.

For a budget-priced AV receiver, I think the clear leader of the pack is the Onkyo TX-SR606, selling on-line for about $370: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR606...9157829&sr=1-2. I would prefer this to the Yamaha if for no reason other than the Audyssey 2EQ system which analyzes your room acoustics from several locations and adjusts speaker parameters accordingly.

I agree with Jamis' comment about cables. You can save money with no sacrifice in quality by buying from Blue Jeans or Monoprice.

Monoprice also offers their own line of flat panel wall mounts, including this one for about $90: http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

For the display, I think the installer was on the right track when he recommended a Panasonic plasma. Great image quality and bang for the buck, so long as you don't object to the energy usage (plasmas in general are kind of energy hogs). You didn't specify a model number so it's hard to say whether the installer's $1800 price is fair. A current-generation 50" Panasonic 1080p plasma like the TH-50PZ85U sells for about $1800 on-line. If you look around you might find a previous generation model like the TH-50PZ77U for a couple of hundred dollars less. If you're willing to accept 720p instead of 1080p resolution, you can save $700 with something like the TH-50PX80U. Depending on how far you plan to sit from the screen, it is quite possible that you wouldn't be able to see the difference between 1080p and 720p at this screen size.

For speakers, I don't see how you could spend less money and expect to get "quality wall mounted surround sound." You could look at Axiom speakers (www.axiomaudio.com), which are highly regarded, but they would be more money. The Definitive Technology ProCinema 800 is supposed to be a very nice little system for about $1200, but I'm not sure how well they would do mounted to the wall.

Hope this helps. -- Paul

You may want to check your Plasma mounting location above the fireplace with a mirror to see what will be reflected on the face of the display.

Personally, I very much dislike a display up high like that unless the seating position is way back so that your not looking up....... neat.

You want to make sure that you don't have any light sources or light walls that will catch the light and show up as a reflection.

I had a similar situation and I ended up with a 1080p LCD from Sharp. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Best of luck.
