Home Theater/Stereo Setup with Oppo

well, i have been getting blank stares from people when i ask them these questions so thought i better turn to the experts

been using an oppo 970 for movies and music playback. i skipped the receiver route and run the speaker outs straight to the amps and then to the speakers. seperate amp for fronts/seperate amp for rears/seperate bridged amp for center and a powered sub. now, i feel the need to maybe be able to hook up a cd changer or a nice 3-head cassette deck or even a vcr(gasp) but have no idea how or if it can be done. the oppo gives me enough flexibility for movies and such but thats it. any ideas or tips or hints would be very welcome!

O.. K.. , that's interesting.

I suppose you could have some crazy network of Y adapters and run any number of components right to the amps.

But this kind of thing is really what a receiver, or a pre/pro is made for.

*edit* Oh, and how exactly do you control volume?

the oppo has level controls for front-rear ect...then i just use the remote to adjust whole system volume.

now, just to show how out of touch i am, what is a pre/pro and how much are they?

Ah, so the Oppo has a master volume for the analog outs? For movies I guess I can't see anything wrong with that approach.

Pre/pro stands for Preamp/Processor. It's a receiver without the amps. It acts as a switching station for all the source components and does various other things like decoding digital audio, and maybe switching and upscaling video. They tend to be more expensive than a standard receiver. They're typically higher end components with fancy features. Although HDMI has thrown a wrench in the works. Pre/pros don't get upgraded as frequently as most lines of receivers. Most manufacturers are just now releasing new pre/pros with all the HDMI features consumers want.

Of course most receivers have pre-outs anyway and can be used as a pre/pro. I only mentioned them because obviously you already have amps and don't really need a receiver with built in amps. But that would still be your cheapest option, using a receiver with pre-outs.

well, i do have an old denon 1801 but it only has preouts for the fronts and center, not the rears. i guess i could look at used pre/pro's

any other help??

What's your budget?

You could probably do the Y-splitter thing cheaply, but good lord would that ever be a messy arrangement, and you'd have to find CD players and cassette decks with volume controls. I imagine they're out there, but I think a preprocessor or a receiver with multi-channel outs to your amps would be better. Onkyo's TX-SR705 has them.

cheap, cheap, real cheap probably would prefer the preprocessor route as the receiver really wouldnt be used except for the outs. but, i think i can get a used receiver for probably far less.

Can you put a number on it? Some would say $50 is cheap, while others would say $500 is cheap.

Yes, receivers tend to be cheaper, and if you ever want to use them alone, they already have the amps. Prepros tend to have better parts/features, though.

under $150.00 i have seen some technics units at that price and i can probably get an outlaw 950 at that price too

Oh dear, you mean to tell me I can attach my Oppo DV- 980H to my amps? I'm aware that it contain a volume control on the remote, but through outs ?

Wow here I thought the Wadia, and such can do this neat trick!

yeah, i just go straight from the oppo to the appropriate amps and use the level control in the oppo for the front/rears/center and sub.
