I'd say that's a feature, not a big.
My guess is it protects you from future unfortunate bursts of noise.

My 906 is causing me audio / video troubles -Just stumbled on this thread and wont sleep tonight after reading 100+ pages of hdmi board repair hell...

Can anyone help me with this weird problem please:- ?

I have a 3 year old '906, it has been stored unused for 18 months - worked fine before I put it away - now i have no audio at all - unit powers up / relays click / display and osd works on main or sub hdmi outputs but no audio from any hdmi or aux inputs - not even audio from the speaker level adjust menus or tuner input!

Weirdly also The audissey test has stopped working, if i connect the mic the relay clicks but the 'enter' buttons do nothing and the unit jams until I unplug the mic.

I did a factory reset - no improvement

The unit passes hdmi picture from all inputs but absolutely no sound at all - 1080p picture has small amounts of noise but is 99% fine - but again no audio out to tv -

There are no especially long delays in switching inputs - 10 to 20 secs max...

Can anybody tell me if this problem is likely to be the dreaded hdmi board? Any suggestions on whether to get the scolding iron out would be appreciated!

I live in the uk - unit supplied new by a main dealer and is out of warranty of course *grrrrrr*

disconnect everything from the receiver, so if you still encounter problems. Sounds like a short in the speaker connections.

It is not the HDMI problem which affects video signals.

Thanks Jon S -

Nope no luck - no sound still - even with the speakers unplugged as well and hdmi routed to the TV it doesn't pass sound through.

Plus I think a short would lead to the amp going into protection mode rather than looking normal but being silent

Has anybody had 'video but no sound' type troubles?

last resort, you can try to reseat the boards in the receiver. This is tricky and you could damage the unit. I had my 905 in storage and it would not recognize any audio signals. I had to reseat my HDMI board to get it back working....

Great, just had the same problem

The amp rebooted and now all audio has ceased to work. This is on top of unstable video (wavy lines on analogue) and flashing on the HDMI output.

Tell me why did I not get Denon again? Need to check if the extended warranty is still in date. I hate modern electronics, it just doesn't last.

After several months of working after being repaired by Onkyo, my TX-NR906 is exhibiting the same HDMI issue, green and pink vertical stripes on the display. I sent my unit in last June and they replaced the caps on the HDMI board. the Onkyo is always used in an air conditioned room at 72 degrees. I have had a 120 mm fan over the HDMI board since purchased and even stuck a heat sink on the HQV processor. This is ridiculous...

Just received my update CD from Onkyo. Not only did the new firmware fix the DTS time bomb problem but also made my surround sound work correctly. After getting my TX-NR906 receiver several years ago, I updated to the latest software (1.04 I think). Surround sound has never been correct. Biggest problem was I couldn't hear the dialog very well and the surround effect wasn't very distinct. Really didn't know what the problem was but knew there was something wrong. I am very pleased with how my receiver now performs. Interestingly, I have not seen anyone else post these same complaints. Only the DTS time bomb problem.

We had a storm pass through, lost electricity in several short bursts, now I notice I don't get any sound. No blue light around the volumn knob, but the rest of the display works, switching works, I get video from the 906 to the TV...just no sound. So, unplug everything and give it a try? Any other ideas for a non-techie?

I have the 906, I plan to put some fans around it to cool it down, is there any spots best to place the fans?
Single 120mm fan on top towards the back blowing up not down

Thank you Andrew! smile.gif

You might try a "Search" on cooling the 906. There was a lot posted shortly after the release.

There are dual fans / mounts made for the 906 and this info is available on this site. They work very well.

Could you please explain how you ordered the firmware upgrade disk for you 906. I have been complaining since I got mine that the center channel isn't where the dialogue is coming from and have tried to adjust a number of times. Thanks in advance.

call Onkyo and ask for the latest DTS HD Master firmware decoder update... If you are in the U.S., they should have it.

Well, I thought I was the lucky one but now is my turn to say: I have HDMI output problems.
After a lightning strike near by, we lost a few things in my house, and one of them was my projector,
which was connected to my NR906 with a 50ft HDMI cable inside the basement wall.
Both unites where protected by Monster Power. I think some how, the electric wave or what ever is called
came underground and hit my HDMI cable sending a shock to both units, it killed my sub hdmi and projector.
My main still works fine.
I repaired laptop video cards in the past by putting the board in the kitchen oven wrapped in aluminum paper
at 375 for 15 minutes and it works.
Heat brakes it, Heat fix it.
Has anyone tried this? Also, Xboxes 360 are repaired by heat too, just asking.
ps. Im no electrician, work at your own risk, dont listen to me.

To protect house electronics you need a whole house surge protector. These devices connect to your house power panel and deflect surges to ground rather than block it. IMO inline protection devices are a rip off. A lighting surge contains a huge amount of energy. Nothing is going to protect against a direct lighting strike but most strikes are not direct so the energy level is much less. Expect to pay about $150 plus installation.

Read the fine print in the Monster manual. The power center I have carries a protection warranty of more than my equipment that is connected. Might need to get a lawyer to make a claim.

Good luck, ayrton

What you actually did with you PC cards was reheating the soldering joints to resolve some connection problems probably.
Heat most of the time "kills" electronic components, shortening there life span.
Why should heat cure over-voltage fatalities, caused by a lightning strike, which probably "evaporated" some components inside your defective units ?

Hi,
My first post here!.
I had a problem like this when routing my Virgin box through my 906 into my tv.
Eventualy sorted it by using the hdmi/dvi input into the tv now everything works fine.
Hope this may help.

Hello, I have a 906 and I have my DIRECTV, and Panasonic BDT310 connected via HDMI inputs. I have connected a Panasonic 65GT50 with 3D to the main out. Picture is perfect so is sound to my Canton Movie 150 QX. So far I I have not had issues with my 906. I have placed an external cooling fan to try to keep it cool.
My problem came when I tried to play the 3D programming from DIRECTV. The message said my TV was not 3D capable.. Now I tried to play a 3D BlueRay disk and it would not play. This is when I realized that my 906 was the culprit. I bypassed it and I was able to see the 3D program..
What is the best way to connect my equipment, so I can get both 3D sound?

That's why I purchased a Denon AVR-2312CI. One way to get around this is, to connect directly to TV and use the optical inputs for sound.  Unfortunately, you will have to reset it after you're done.

I will connect the HDMI from the DIRECTV to the TV , and the optical out to the 906. My DVD has two HDMI outputs one will go to the TV and the second to the 906. My Apple TV HDMI to the 906, and CD player into the second optical in. All this because the 3D!
There are two outputs from the 906 one is the Main, HDMI and a Sub, Any difference on which to use?
This will be a pain with all the remotes and different input , I may invest on a Harmony 1100 remote to ease things, my wife wants one button simplicity, or she is frustrated😤

I never have upgraded the firmware, I don't see any issues, should I upgrade or leave it alone. I bought my 906 almost four years ago as a refurbished unit, maybe some of the problems were fixed.

Thanks

Hi All,

Have just picked up a used TX-NR906 and have some questions:

PS3 Slim, should I set DTS-MA to be decoded by the PS3 instead of bit-streamed to safeguard against "bombs"?

My firmware is as follows:
Main Version 9 1.01/08801A
DSP1 08611A
DSP2 08605C
DSP3 08506A
HDMI 08627A
VIDEO 08703EO/
NET 1.00/080702a

Do I need to upgrade firmware?

Thanks,

J

yes...you will need the latest DSP update to avoid the DTS bomb. Having the PS3 decode the signal will also work but it's best to update the receiver.... Just contact Onkyo for the update CD.

Thanks for firmware and the I will call Onkyo tomorrow for the DSP CD.

Another questions can you change Equalizer mode - MultEQ - Dynamic EQ - Dynamic Volume..etc. via remote without going into the setup menu?

Thanks again,

J
