If you don't own HD DVD, I'd still recommend it as it will be a HUGE improvement over the SD DVD. Also, the DTS-MA track is excellent.
It looked really good on my display, the opening scene with the Germans, you could see every beed of sweat on them. Plus all the submarine piping and stuff in the background really stood out, made you feel you right there on board the sub with them. Then switch to the US Navy party with all the white dress uniforms, The whites uniforms didn't seem as crisp as they should have.
I remember playing this movie at the theatre, back then I was a manager. Our print was a lot darker so a lot of the background details didn't stick out, I also remember right after we got rid of this movie, we upgarded the sound system in the theaters, so I missed out on the what it would have sounded like.
