Maybe I can get another projector! Advice please...

We recently moved into a new house. In our old house I built a little home theater with a Sony HS10 projector. It worked very slick because I had a little closet where I could hide the components and I had a drop ceiling to hide the wires.

Our new house has a similar layout in the basement where I will have a viewing area, pool table and bar. Because it doesn't have the drop ceiling I was thinking that running the wires would be an eyesore and a deal breaker for the better half. I even made the trip to Ultimate Electronics, BB and CC to look at 50ish inch plasmas. At one point I even had one picked out and was ready to get it. But I couldn't quite pull the trigger. I really miss the 100 inch screen I had and I think I want to try and make it work here.

So I'm looking for some advice here. First, the projector. I was happy with the HS10. But I haven't kept up on the latest and greatest. I will plow through the threads here but I'm looking for thoughts on where to start. It will be used mainly for HDTV, Sports and the occasional movie. We used the HS10 as our main TV and while it wasn't perfect for non HD stuff it was acceptable to us. The price of the plasmas we were looking at were in the $1800 range, so I would be looking to stay under $2K on the projector also.

The room is downstairs so light won't be a big concern. On football Sunday's it won't be pitch dark in here because we do have a walkout, but overall the light will be very similar to what we had in the old house and the HS10 did OK in those light conditions.

Thoughts on good projectors to start researching?

look into the Benq W5000, the Mitsubishi HC5500 (or 4900/5000 you can get for like 1300.00 online) both would be good

No. It's a flat ceiling with another 10 or so feet behind where I would like to mount it.

Wow, there sure is a lot to read through! I didn't realize that the 1080p projectors had come down that much recently.

As a starting point, the two 1080p projectors that caught my eye were the Panny AE-2000u and the Sony VW40. On one of the write-ups I saw the guy said that a lot of these are like comparing a Lexus to a BMW to a Caddy, etc. They are all going to be nice projectors with their pluses and minuses. But is there another projector I should be looking at in this similar price range? I bumped up my price range a bit when I saw I could get 1080p for a bit more.

If you are interested in the Sony VW40 may be you should wait a little longer for the reviews for the Sony HW10. Supposedly improved over VW40 but at a similar price point.

Looking a little deeper, the Benq W5000 looks like a good projector. Thanks to Pure Evil for pointing me in that direction. I've been leaning towards the Sony projectors because I had one and I'm comfortable with the brand name. Honestly, I'm not as familiar with the Benq name, but it sure sounds like a nice pj. Anyone want to comment either way?

Thinking mainly about HD sports and TV, and the occasional movie, I'm looking for opinions on the projectors that I've narrowed it down to:
Sony VW40 or the upcoming HW10
Benq 5000
Panny AE 2000.

I will more than likely project to a DIY Parkland Plastic screen.

Wow, dont let a cable run be a deal breaker w/ the better half. A few options have been mentioned (Cable Raceway, a product I've seen but havent used) but the way we solved our 'hard ceiling' issue was this.

I cut an access panel into the ceiling (I'm not sure what your ceiling is made out of but mine is dryway), in a nice neat square (ok I'm a little cockeyed and it was a bit longer than wide) I carefully brought the piece down, and then I found some 3" trim, cut 45's and 'boxed it out' now I just turn the piece at an angle, and lay it down (on top of the trim) its nice and neat and hides everything.

Now up in the access panel I can reach the following, a dedicated outlet for the PJ and a powerstrip (surge protector), and since the electrican had to pull the powercable, I had him pull the HDMI cable with it (yea a bit of overkill, I could of gotten by with non-hdmi, but I figured, this cable is in the ceiling and who knows what the next projector might need, I'm banking on HDMI obviously) Also up in the access panel, I reinforced the ceiling to hang the projector on it, a piece of 2x4 over the stringers (joists? I'm not a carpenter, so I'm not sure of the exact terminology) I then cut a 2nd piece of 2x4 to fit inbetween the stringers, so it 'rests' ontop of the stringers, but is thick enough to touch the drywall, which I mounted the PJ Mount to, it worked out very well.

The only cables you see are the Power and HDMI, and that is about 6 inches worth from through the ceiling to the PJ which you would have in the drop ceiling also.

If my description sounds confusing (it is 6:15am and only 1 cup of coffee so far) let me know, and I'll take a picture or 2 of the set up.

Thanks Rich! I had seen the first two reviews but not the 2nd two that you linked. The Benq sure sounds like a very good projector. Just not sure if I should wait and see about the new Sony coming out.
