Just wanted to share that with about 30 seconds left in last nights big game, my 2.5 month old 141fd crashed and won't turn back on. Did I mention I had a ton of people over for superbowl party! I get a couple flashes of red in the corner and thats it. wtf!!!!! And this morning I get a busy signal trying to call pioneer tech support

That's okay--the key reception was at 36 seconds before the end of the game.

Don't feel bad, mine did this after about 5 hours of playtime. Talk about infant mortality. If it flashes twice, stops and repeats the sequence, it means 1 of 3 boards are down. The boards are either the horizontal sync, the vertical sync or the power supply boards. They have to do a resistance test to determine which board is bad and then swap it out.

Good luck with your board replacement. Sorry to hear it went out on you.

Sincerely,
Tim

New question: am sure it takes a lot of time and effort to get good at it, but can a newb actually learn how to calibrate from the documentation provided with Calman and the Gamma/Chroma/I1? Or is there a primer worth reading? Or is it one of those "you have to do it to learn it" things? I think ControlCal kind of fell into the latter category. Was a bit intimidating to read about, but really easy to use once I got it.

Thanks.

Don.t allow yourself to be intimidated. Once you understand the lingo, and have an understanding of what you are trying to accomplish, it will come naturally to you.

IMO, the knowledge, and appreciation that you gather from "DIY", is unparalleled; not to mention, fun!

In the calibration forum, Tom has a stickied thread that is pretty informative, I would start there, or "Calibration for Dummies" which is also free online.

Calman is the way to go and learn how to, for these reasons.

1. Not only are you leaning about how to calibrate but also learning how to use the software. Calman has many guides included in the software.

2. When you start to read other guides on how to, that will only tend to confuse you.

3. Calman is also good because both D-Nice and me use Calman. Are calibration reports and settings are posted and are made up from the raw data we get from calman. And understanding what these reports say is very important for you to understand along with the settings we post for those reports. When you start to understand how to use the software, are reports and settings will help you to know what to look for when using calman and your understanding of what the raw data is telling you.
There for you have a good idea if you are headed in the right direction.

4. If you want to save yourself a lot of work and frustration then look at the I1pro.

People have been asking if it's worth having a professional do the calibration, or just get it done by the big-box store's staff.

Answer: it's pointless to have the big-box guys show up. They showed up today and couldn't get their software working with the 141. Said software that could do that is supposed to be ready in 4-6 weeks, from the manufacturer of the optical doo-dad they use to calibrate with. Which is absurd, of course, because the display will be nearing end of life by then (not in terms of it still working, I just mean in terms of it being supplanted by newer models). I told them about ControlCal and they were poleaxed.

Yeah yeah, I should have known better, but it was thrown in for free so whatever. I had just hoped it would be reasonably decent and then later I'd get the real calibration.

Does anyone know of a calibrator who covers the southern part of the San Francisco bay area? We live in the Santa Cruz mountains about 15 minutes from Los Gatos.

Seth doesn't have ControlCAL.. he could get it though..

Robert Busch is based in the Bay Area, he also uses one of the very high-end meters and ControlCAL.

Robert, how many 141s have you ISFcc calibrated via ControlCAL? I'm just about ready to have mine calibrated as well.

I am sorry to report that I will not be getting a Oppo BD-83 anytime soon.

However for you owners of a Pioneer BD-09 I will be posting settings for are 141, maybe a week from Sunday.

You've already ordered the 09 sillysally? That is awesome! I look forward to hearing your review on it. If it is "all that" I'll be getting one too. And yes, please post your calibration settings.
Yes Robert and Joe got to me. Robert is shipping my 09 next week as he is out of stock now.

And of course I will post my settings and calibration report.

For me the interesting part is can all or some of the new features of the 09 work to are benefit, and not compromise in a bad way the integrity of the film, but bring out the best the BD has to offer.

If I am not mistaken Joe has already stated that the 09 does bring out the best. So I hope I can confirm the same.
I have calibrated approx. 15 of the new Elites. More important, I have been a calibrator for as long as the ISF has been around, plus I have all of the right tools to do the job correctly.
Thanks Robert. I saw that you were a charter member. I was just wondering how much experience you had using the ISFcc interface on these particular models. I'll give you a call to go over other questions I have regarding what all should be calibrated and room lighting conditions and such.

I'm curious to hear what you think of the 09 and will eagerly await
your findings. I wonder if it behaves the same as the 51/05 does
when paired with a Kuro regarding the WTW issue.

That sounds great. I will be in the office most of the day tomorrow.

Ohh my, my wife found out about the 09 today and said, now I know why you have been wanting me to get a new laptop.

Don't tell the wife.

As I have reported and also posted my calibration report (see links below). imo there is no more problem with WTW or white crush, when using firmware 1.21 for my BD-51 and calibrating the BD-51 for my Kuro 141.

If It was not for firmware 1.21 and the big improvements I am seeing with my 141 using my BD-51, I would have never considered the BD-09.
The only problem with my BD-51 is a mild popping I got for a very short time on one of my BDs. However I have read a report saying that the new euro firmware 1.25 has fixed that problem for the BD05/51.

And yes I am excited to see the out come myself, using my Kuro 141 with the BD-09.

I will be awaiting your impressions between the 51, and the 09, seeing as I have the 05, and knowing that you are extremely critical and objective in your observations.

Thanks for your post. It helps to remind me not to let my excitement or disappointment get in the way of the facts.

Are you running it through a receiver, or are you going straight 09 to 141?

I will be running the 09 straight to my 141 (port 5) via monster 1000hd HDMI (2 meters long) cable, at first. I will also use my 2ch analog MK IV SE tube amp/preamp to test the 2ch analog of the BD-09. I will then at a later date use my A/V 705 and see how that goes.

Has anyone had their 141 looked at AND repaired by a service center to fix the buzzing problem? If so, what was the cause and/or fix? I have been told it might be a power supply. Anyone have the power supply replaced? I talked to a Pioneer rep and he told me to contact a local service center and that they'll know exactly what it is and that "it's an easy fix". I called........they have no clue. Before I move further I would like to get your thoughts or experience with this issue. Any Buzzers out there?

I have never heard of anyone fixing anything to get rid of any level of buzz. I have heard that if the buzz is laud, and beyond normal Pioneer should and in many cases has replaced units.

Remember...all plasmas buzz a little, but none should buzz a lot.

Some guy posted not too long ago about him fixing the buzz, which to him, was caused by the vibration of the back of the set. I tried looking for the post, but I'm not having any luck.

I heard of some cases where they replaced some boards that is very rare.
