I used three calibration disc for the sharpness setting.
Spears and Muns. (thank you Oppo for sending me this disc)
DVD HD Basics.
AVS HD 709.

Using Ehn mode 1 was to sharp even with sharpness set at -15. Not only was the PQ to sharp but eye strain came into play viewing at close distances (8ft).
Also understand what I am comparing the Oppo to and what I was use to viewing for the last 5 months. The BD-09.

I agree with D-Nice on that statement.
I will not speak for what UMR had to say, but I will say I didn't get the Oppo because of a problem with the BD-09.

And also understand that UMR didn't do a complete calibration on my system, but instead a neutral calibration on my 141. He was simply helping me out In between gigs using his top of the line equipment.

I disagree with you on this. My findings are totally opposite than yours with both players. But it all depends on YOUR eyes. What looks best to You and fits in Your environment.

I am using mode 2 on my 141 for both 09 and 83. BD-09 looks more natural than 83 to my eyes. My calibrated RS20 didn't take much long to announce 09 a clearer winner in terms of natural, deeper colours than BD-83.



I again respectfully disagree on above. I am still tweaking my settings and once I am happy, will post my settings.

Is the Oppo BDP-83 worth $500-600 over my Sony S550? If so, why? Thanks.

Edited: Yes, my major interest is in music but even for my part-time movies hobby, I was puzzled which player to get. The another one in the competition is going to be Denon 3800BD next weekend. I will take my BDP-09 to one of owner of 3800 for comparison. And then I will invite him to bring his 3800 at my place to compare in my environment. But if I find 3800 better then this time I won't be able to return my BDP-09.

Ummm... return the -09 now while you can. The -83 is a superior player by all accounts.

Use the money you saved on something else.

Got a copy of ControlCal, bought a USB/Serial adapter from BestBuy and then a standard serial cable from a local Computer store and successfully unlocked the ISF-Day/Night & Auto modes. Plugged in Turbes ISF-Day & Night settings. ISF-Day is the best I have seen for pop and blacks, will have my set calibrated on the 18th June

I will, i am already blown away by the ISF-Day, "Kung Fu Panda" played on a Sony BD player is 3D all the way with amazing light dark scenes. I do like POP and was thinking about an LCD as my last Pro 150FD didn't pop when there was a lot of white to display, but the 141FD has more POP power and takes a fantastic picture to an amazing picture IMHO.

Hey guys- should I be using the panel resolution or the max resolution for my denon 3800bdci when feeding 1080p24 to my 141fd via hdmi ? Am I crazy to think that when it is set to Max, that it looks better than panel? thanks

Robert Busch just finished calibrating my Pro 141 FD. If you look back at my initial post you will see that I was blown away by the picture right out of the box. Robert spent a long time and literally was sweating over this set and in my mind it sure was worth it. The most noticeable difference is a real feeling of depth. This is easily seen when ABing between Pure setting and his ISF night/day. There is just no comparison. On the Pure setting the picture is great with vibrant colors and natural skin tones but when switching to his ISF settings the colors and the detail really seem to pop without being artificial. The picture also takes on a palpable 3D feeling. We sampled two BR discs. The Dark Knight and The Fifth Element. Very natural skin tones, stable image, no judder, very black blacks, and lots of shadow detail. We then popped in The Chronicles of Riddick in the HD DVD player and were both highly impressed. The blowing snow in the opening scene was pure white and shadow detail was maintained in the cave scene. DTV HD looked great. We previewed some MLB and Wall-E on StarzHD and both looked amazing. Even the AppleTV showed major improvement. Both SD and HD content from the AppleTV looked great with accurate colors and beautiful images. I couldn't be happier. It really has made a huge difference. Anyone who has invested the money in one of these displays who has not had it calibrated is not realizing the full value of their investment. I anticipate reviewing a lot of the movies I have already seen looking for extra detail and I am really looking forward to the Sox/Yankees game on NESNHD this afternoon.

Aw, c'mon - if the 141s had an IR input but yours did not work, then I'd say you would have a complaint!

But since you have no legitimate beef here, you are sentenced to watching TDK on Blu-ray once again on your "crippled" 141, while trying not being distracted by the cruise ships outside your window...

Mine will be, hopefully this w/e! Just got my new serial cable today (straight thru; had originally bought a null modem one by mistake), and have already installed ControlCal on my laptop last weekend. Can't wait to try out the various ISF Day/Night settings posted here by others!

I'll also post some pix of my 141 + gear soon, though some members here have some dang impressive setups! But I hope that my system isn't "voted off the island"...

Stupid question! Why the big diference between "night settings" 141 vs 151. If the sets are said to be so similar? I am refering to Silly's settings vs d-nice settings. The reason for the question is that I am about to choose between the two sets and if the differences are suggestive of some other aspect of performance I would like to know.

? Are you saying that one set of settings are based on a different overall light output or that there are fundemental design differences, say for instance the power supply, so that for an effectively similar calibration the setup needs to be different. Again the reason I ask ios that most forums suggest that any real world differences in picture performance would not be observable to the naked eye.

My situation is that I require both a stand and center chanel speakers.

When I add the cost of those components to the cost of the 141, here in Canada, Iquickley reach a price above the 151 price and I still don't have all the features that come standard with the 151, Further to that I can go to controlcal and plug in the values of other users andperhaps get a reasonable facsimile of a basic calibration of the 151 while I don't know if controlcal offfers the same possibility with the 141 (are the night day values available from d-nice or SS on the forums?

Any input would be appreciated.
