I would love to see a comparison between Runco OPAL Plasma and Pioneer Elite Plasma to see if Runco would be a good choice now that Pioneer is gone.
Isnt Runco flat panels just rebadged gear? i doubt if its as good as a pioneer panel.
As far as I am aware, only the glass is sourced from Panasonic. The guts of the panel are Runco. I can't wait to see it! Like I said, they treat the panel BEHIND the glass and the actual glass can be cleaned with anything---very durable. Apparently its 20 times less reflection than any (including Pioneer) flat panel on the market. From what I understand, they took what they know about how Pioneer achieved those great black levels and applied a different treatment to the panel and done things differently. I will have it (hopefully) by the end of the month. I will take pictures and write a review in direct comparision with Pioneer. And don't get me wrong---Pioneer made awesome televisions-- and I will give an honest opinion once I have it.

Correct and please do let us know wen you test it.

Good luck Sony234 I have not seen this Runco but have been underwhelmed by their prior efforts especially given the price differential. I would also hate to go from a 60" to a 50". I have a 50" Panny commercial set in the family room and a 141 in the theater room and the 60" screen size is just so much better. lwet us know what you think once you get the Runco.
I can understand the coating behind the glass making it more durable as far as cleaning. But as far as putting the coating behind the glass, that is also not the best way to make it less reflective. I have a hunch, that their claims for the glass coating benefits being 20 times less reflective than the Pioneers, may be more than somewhat exaggerated and more like quite a bit of marketing BS.

Question to the folks that have both, does the BDP-83 have a better picture compared to the PS3 when connected to the pro-141fd on blu ray playback? I Have the PS3 and was wondering if I can see improvement on blu rays on the Oppo. No interest in regular DVD's or streaming netflix.

Thanks.

From the OPPO FAQ linked from the first page of the OPPO owner's thread:

"Opinions vary, but the consensus seems to be that Blu-ray player picture quality is very similar among all players producing 1080p images from 1080p disc content, which is how almost all film-based movies are mastered on Blu-ray disc."

Great timing...I am currently using a PS3 but was wondering if I should use a stand alone player also. The PS3 was originally the player to have but that was two years ago when stand alones were very expensive. I have read that the PS3 Slim might not produce as good of a picture as the "fat" versions. I have two "fats"...still interested in hearing from people that have both.

Thanks htwaits, I am interested in the Oppo's source direct feature, something the PS3 does not have as far as I know

Please excuse my newbness as I just want to achieve the best picture my plasma can produce, I'm having my set calibrated in May

Source direct is intended for sources that require no processing (BD) or that will be processed elsewhere. The SD (DVD) scaling in an Oppo -83 is better than most other devices.

You restricted your question to Blu-ray so don't extrapolate the quote I posted to other features.

Both the PS3, the OPPO, or other Blu-ray players "should" be neutral when playing a Blu-ray disk. Most people buy the OPPO for outstanding audio features, and for outstanding SD DVD conversion.

Right, it's the neutrality that I am after when it comes to blu ray playback as I want the picture un-altered when it is displayed by the 14fd, hence the interest in the source direct feature of the Oppo, but if it isn't going to make a difference then I suppose the PS3 will do

The PS3 should be fine for Blu-ray disks, but I'm not an owner so what do I know.

I retired my PS-3 when the -83 came out. The -83 and the PS-3 are very similar, performance wise for BD. The -83 is significantly better for DVD, however. There are other -83 features (SACD, DVD-A, etc.) that I find desirable in the -83.

However, if you have a PS-3 and all you do is watch BD's... keep doing that. It's more than fine.

Im moving and dont have my original box for my 141. I did manage to track down a box from a 151 thou. Does anyone know if a 141 will fit in a 151 box being that its 1 inch thinner? I thinking the cut out in the foam will be to big and cause the display to tip.

+1. I own both, and this mirrors my experience. Save your money if you don't care about the 83's additional audio formats and you watch primarily BD.

I do think the 83 is worth it if you do watch a lot of DVD, though.

I am almost ready to order my new Runco OPAL plasma. As soon as I have it I will post pics as well as a full, UNBIASED review. Will it live up to Pioneer's blacks (Runco claims 20 times contrast/black level of current tvs)... we will have to see... will it have superior processing for BOTH standard def as well as high def... we'll have to see...
Also--before you guys give up all hope that nothing better will ever come out, we have not yet seen Panasonic's 65 inch "3-D Infinite Black Pro" panel yets whichs ships this spring. I am quite confident we will see some pretty remarkable stuff in the VERY NEAR future.

Hi! I just took delivery of a Elite Pro 141. Probably won't set it up till the weekend. I currently am viewing a 58" Samsung, model 58a550 which is a really nice tv. My brother is taking it off my hands. What can I expect from my new tv? Also I was wondering where I could purchase a base/stand for this monitor, Pioneer or compatible, as it will be awhile until I have it wall mounted. I am hoping to read through these thread posts this weekend as well so I can become familiar with this tv. Thanks; pcarel

Pioneer has been selling their KRP-TS01 stand for half price ($199, free shipping). However, even at half price it is expensive. I bought one just to have in case I want to put it on a stand in the future. Currently I have my 141 mounted on a BDI 8540-1 mount.

You can get the stand here.

Pioneer is also selling their KRP-WM01 ultra thin wall mount for the 141 for almost half price. The trick is that you will not see the reduced price until after you place the item in the cart and go to checkout. Still expensive, but a very nice mount. I ordered one a couple of weeks ago.

The 60" stands are not as readily available as the 50s. There are some other model numbers you can google for in the accessory section of the KRP FAQ but all the 9G panels appear to have the same mount/pocket dimensions so any 60" stand will do. The PDK-1015 has been seen on Ebay. The non-Elite stands are unattractive unless you have a speaker to put under the panel.

I have had my display just a little over a month now. I have no buyers remorse. This panel is amazing, and seems to my eyes, to be getting better is it ages.

My only problem I have had so far, is rendering images when using a web browser like Firefox or IE to access the monitors settings. I can usually bum though it.

I have recently hooked up the xbox360 and Wii. Both look fantastic.

I did not use any break in slides, I just took it easy on the panel, and didn't play any game systems until it had a few hundred hours. I will eventually get it properly calibrated.

The stand for this system is amazing. I also bought a new tv stand for it, which I love. I will post pictures later.

It never ceases to amaze me, my wife, who could really care less about tech, every now and then goes, WOW, look at that beaded necklace, it looks real, almost 3D!

Great advice on here, and thanks to you guys I own an awesome tv that I can be proud of. Still shocks me how many people have no idea what a Pioneer Elite Kuro is.

I have learned a lot in the few days this thread has been active. Since the started of this thread, I have been refunded my $$$ from BB for the calibration I purchased and hired an independent calibrator thanks to a PM from Turbe.... His name is Robert Busch of Busch Home Theater in Santa Rosa, Ca. Robert was very professional in my home and only showed me the up most respect to my wife and I.
I kinda felt bad for the guy as he tried to explain to me what the hell he was doing, sad to say most went right over my head lol... This still didn't stop him from showing me before and after results after about every adjustment made. What a great guy and a breath of fresh air to have such good communication. He explained his equipment, every test pattern and what he was trying to achieve with them.
Robert was here for nearly 4 hours (with some BS'n) and looked at a few Blue ray DVD's and some HDTV to check out his handy work. He even dialed in my new Blue Ray player for me. He took the time to explain all my monitors functions and the remote.
For all you guys out there on the fence about getting a calibration done as I was, all I can say is DO IT!!! I thought I had a great picture before, well this thing rocks now. There is detail and color as never before. I could not be happier with the results. Robert has an acute eye for detail and knows his stuff. Yes, a professional like this will be more than BB, but at least I have piece of mind that it was done correctly.
I want to thank Turbe for the referral and to Robert for the job well done...

Pic's were taken with a point and shoot... Sorry for the poor quality.

Thanks to both of you for the calibration report. I've added it to the flat panel (Post#2) list that's linked at the bottom of my post.

I was wondering.

Is there any point in enabling isf-day and isf-night ala kuroreader without having the ability to control the 9 point gamma?

Thanks

Do we have a list of Canadian (Toronto, Ontario) ISF calibrators?
