Yes Zone 2 can pass component video but just not with the associated analog audio and that is a very poor design..a design that basically makes HD with audio in Zone 2 almost impossible. The only way to make it work is use Zone 3 to feed the audio and use Zone 2 to select the component video source. This way you can select whatever audio source is associated with the component video source on Zone 2. Plan on building very complex macros on the remote because it takes a lot of buttons to switch control from Zone 2 to 3 !!!!!!
This is very misleading marketing by Sony. The whole Sony pitch for the 6400 and the 5400 was to have real HD in Zone 2...and one would logically assume that includes the associated audio with any HD component source. It seems very backwards that the only way to be able to select a single source for Zone 2 and get audio and video is to use composite video inputs and analog audio inputs which provides nothing but 4x3 stretched to 16x9 at 1080i and analog audio.
Sony has much work to do to get this straightened out. Let's hope the engineers can work it into the first firmware update.
If anyone has figured out a solution to the problem, please post.
I have yet to test audio out from zone2 on my 4400es. I know that the video end of it works fine even though in my receiver there is no upconversion for zone 2. Because of that only direct connection work so yes you might be right and component out probably has to use zone 3 since it has no dedicated audio out. That OR, you have to select ANALOG input for your audio sources.
There is a setting that can have audio set to auto where digital takes preference, and analog where that takes preference.
I know by default the component video inputs are assigned to digital audio. That might have to be turned off to get the assigned input to work properly.
I'll have to play and see.
edit: I did some tests and I found no problems really. It was cool that I could watch the same source on main digitally and on zone 2 with analog sound. I thought it would force you to use analog sound for both zones.
I think I see what you mean about zone 2 not working with "assigned" inputs.
For example component 3 is associated to BD, component 2 to dvd, and component 3 to SAT.
I guess you cant mix and match since zone 2 only works as a direct connection.
A few interesting things I found.
If you use hdmi out, your composite out and component out still work just without the scaling.
It sort of like zone2 where the devices have to be connected with the exact same connection.
still kind of useful.
It's cool that if you have component for output the scaler will still work with composite output.
If you set it to 480i, the video will come out on both as such.
and, if you set component output 1080i, it will show up as 480i on composite out for your composite inputs.
it all sounds confusing but play with it. the receiver can do some cool things.
