Denon 1930ci or Oppo 980 for SACD/DVDA only

I sold my 2900 a few months ago when I was rebuilding my theater. Now I'm looking for an inexpensive (not cheap, lol), hi res player to replace it. The 2 at the top of my list are the 870 which I've heard great things about, and the 1930 which is well...a Denon. These will be connected via HDMI to an Onkyo 905 which is capable of decoding DSD for signal integrity. The Oppo can be bought new for under 170.00 and the 1930 can be found refurbished for under 100.00.

I've scoured through all the reviews and am leaning towards the Oppo, but I've always been a huge Denon fan (prior to my 905), and am having a tough time pulling the trigger on the Oppo.

Is one going to stand head and shoulders above the other in the audio dept?

Since you're running all of the audio over HDMI to your Onkyo, the player/transport should have no role in decoding the audio and really no impact on the sound...that responsibility will be placed on the DACs in the Onkyo. If you were running the audio over analog, THEN there might be differences between the two. I'd just say go for whatever's cheapest...

Yeah, I figured that should be the case but I didn't know if one was a better transport than the other.

I have tried several universal players this year in the $300 to $700 range, including the 1930 and 1940. Both these players had issues playing dvd+-R's, and DVD-A discs. With the DVD-A's there was slight dropouts in sound occasionally.

If you are connecting by HDMI, then I would recommend the Pioneer DV-48AV. This thing has played everything I have thrown at it, including damaged discs, without a hitch. And right now it is being given away:

Too bad the Pioneer only does 2 channel DSD, which is a deal breaker for me.

Where did you see that restriction?

The Pioneer does multi channel DSD. No problems.

Hmmm, by bad. There is a review on here which states it does not do it, and no one refuted it. If it does, that throws it back in the mix seeing as I have a Vann's right up the road from me.

It definitely does, you have to set HDMI video outout to 720p or higher (even when not using video) or you will only get 2 channel.

Those Denons don't output SACD over HDMI at all, by the way, not even PCM.

Yup the Denon doesn't output any SACD audio over digital which was the main reason why I sold it and got the Pioneer Dv-48AV. I hated having to run 6 analog cables to my Onkyo receiver. With the Pioneer I can connect using DSD via HDMI which sounds much better for me.

Thanks guys. I'm really glad I didn't get the 3910 which I almost pulled the trigger on. I'm trying to reduce my cable clutter as well. I'll post my thoughts when I get it hooked up.

It stands for Direct Stream Digital. Here is a link on the Wiki site about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Stream_Digital

That denon the OP linked can do DSD over HDMI? I though the cheapest DSD HDMI transport available was the Oppo 980?

i don't think so--that's the whole point of having a denon in the first place--good dac's and analog stage--if using just for a transport it really shouldn't matter much. Too bad about geting rid of the 2900--that was a great unit but I do understand wanting to eliminate cable clutter.

noticed this listing by an ebay store.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ADME:B:LC:US:1

its for the Denon DVD-757 which is the same as the 1930ci.

i know I paid close to 200 for mine a couple years ago so would love to get it for this price.

I've bought from this ebay store before so I always check to see what they have cus some good stuff slips through the cracks unnoticed and you can get for a great price. I've called them before so its nice they have a brick and mortar store you can call and everything.

I still have this dvd player and it upconverts great so I dont need this but figured I'd mention it here after perusing their current listings for sale and seeing it for such a low price.

there shipping is kind of high but they say its UPS and best for the customer and done by weight. either way it only has a 1 day left so it if it goes unnoticed $9.99 plus shipping would be a sick price to get this great upconvert dvd player for.

I check there items currently for sale often because they have new stuff all the time and all their auctions seem to only be for a week and then gone at whatever price it goes for at the end of the 7 days so I've grabbed a few things cheap that not many others seemed to notice were for sale and so cheap.

Quatre, could you post the name of that ebay store? I mostly buy used, but if I could find a good deal on a new player that would be better. Thanks.

actually it sold for $10.50 plus shipping. Omg someone got super lucky. Frick. That's why I check that eBay store now and then. Itssoldherestore. They sell stuff for other ppl but once they list it, it's only on for a week and if not many ppl see it and it slips through the cracks like this oneobviouslt did you can a great deal.

Damn, 4 ppl bid but it still only sold for $10.50 plus shipping. Damnt, even though I have one. At that price I could have bought it and resold it for at least $100 and even that's a bargain.

You realize that the DVD-1940 and DVD-758 were being closed out all spring and summer for $80 at Amazon, 6th Ave, and J&R brand new? I picked up a couple.

Now these are available:
