Thanks slumpey.

What I would also like to know is if there has been any improvement on the MENU INTERFACE SLOWNESS ISSUE. Can anyone with the new batch confirm if this is completely gone? If it is fixed I might get one for another room.

Thanks.

Slumpey,

Just curious. What would be an indication or physical mark that you got the most current 950 version? Is there a mfg date and if so what should the date be?

Also is your unit hooked up to a DVD Blu-Ray player as well as a stereo receiver? If it is do you still notice the menu "lag/delay"?

Thanks

beyond that is there any real viewing difference. I.E. is the picture of the newer model any better or is it really in the eye of the beholder...

Slumpey (or anybody willng to), would you be able to take a picture of this in a pitch black room and post it? And if possible, could you take a picture of some credits rolling on an a black background? This is a big test for me with my 4681 as there is some blooming with credits rolling on a black background. I've noticed with any ambient like, blooming is non-existent, but noticeable in a pitch black room.

to all,

I just wanted to give my honest opinion and I felt the fix definitely made the tv better. If you are in your return/exchange window and can make the switch, than I recommend it. If you are outside your window, you should contact samsung about getting the tv fixed if you want the change.

Was watching credits from a movie last night and there appeared to be no blooming (do the ps3 load test, and you will not notice the cloud). Like I said, it might be my eyes, but my tv now seems alittle bit sharper. Could have been that I was without a tv for a few weeks, but I like this baby even more now.

I just had the opportunity to work on a Samsung A950. These displays are very high quality and respond well to calibration. A report with the results are attached.

I bet that 950 looks phenomenal now!

For those that don't know, umr's service is top notch.

Pictures are too dependent on your computer display calibration to do much good. I also do not carry my Canon 20D with me on the road.

So how does it compare to the 650/750? When you calibrate these how much difference can there be besides black levels?

Agreed, UMR is tops! He did wonders with my SXRD RPTV which had numerous issues previous to his calibration.

Jeff, thanks for the report. I am glad to hear this since the A950 is one of the models that I am considering.

Black levels effect not only that, but contrast and near black color performance. The better the blacks the better a set can do near black color. The difference between a calibrated and non-calibrated version will generally be in improved color accuracy and the proper image shading.

I wish I could do the ps3 test on this set, but I don't have the bucks to forfeit right now. Maybe in a year when the new sammy's are coming out and this one is on clearance for 60% off like the 4681 I picked up. That's great this set can do this.

honestly how much better is a 950 picture wise over a 650 750,thanks
post #1458 of 3775
Dammit i did it, i exchanged my 55a950. Once i saw slumpy's post and the vague greatness of picture he was describing i just wasn't satisfied with mines no longer; i just dropped everything today and just started boxing everything back to original and sent it on its way. (obsessive video-phial) Don't get me wrong avs members the pre-production model was great: contrast, picture quality, adjust-ability, the "hd'ness", but bottom line if there is better then better it is. I just hope when i get mines from backorder that it would be a new version with the up date and not the one with the 9th digit "A"

p.s. there's a great is condition and well cared for used 950 that's probably on its way to being put up as an "open box" out there in northern California that i returned at a ..oomph b...cough cough buy.
even if you get a "9" in the serial number but have the new firmware 1002 you are still good. It doesn't have to be an "A" as the ninth digit. All you need is the current firmware.

that's not how i read the cnet review update that started all this. that cnet review update iirc was pushing samsung to do the right thing and provide original buyers with the new hardware not just the software update that would supposedly take care of much of the problem, but not the full enchillada.

isn't that correct?

I've started a new category for the Samsung xx950 in the calibration report list for flat panel (Post#2) displays.

I don't read enough threads to spot all owner calibration reports so if any of you readers come across a report that's not already in the lists that are linked at the bottom of my post, please let me know with a PM, or a post.

Hey guys,

This is my story, I recently purchased a Pioneer 6020 and was delighted with it
and thought it was the best PQ that money could buy beside the Elite of course.Sorry but also was brain washed to beleive that no lcd could touch the PQ of a Kuro.

That was until a few days ago when i was at BB and noticed the 55''950
I was stopped in my tracks in awe!! I thought i had 3d glasses on!!
The PQ looked amazing the depth was incredible...

Since then My Kuro looks kind of blah to me!
I am really considering selling it to buy a 55''950.

I would really like to hear your thoughts on this one,,

1.Am I crazy or correct to say say it blows the Kuro's away?
Should I sell and get a 950?

2.Before buying your Samsung 950 model did you guy's consider a Kuro?
If so,why did you go with a 950 over the Kuro? I think i know the answer!

3.Does the 950 look this good once at home?

Some advice really appreciated,,

No, that is not correct..what slumpey is saying, is that sets manufactured after sept 20, have the new hardware and firmware.

The new firmware works only w/the new hardware, so if you have a 9 in the ninth digit of the s/n, and the new firmware, you also will have the new hardware...doesn't have to be an october build date.

The 950's with the october build date just guarantee's that you have the updated set without having to go into the menu and check the firmware, as all sets manufactured in sept do not have it.

correct, thanks adam for the clarification

Well, looks like i'm getting a new replacement set. Anyone who gets service on there set right now will also get a replacement. The parts to fix this problem are not available and will not be for awhile. Thus means they deem it unrepairable, but there is a catch that didn't affect me. If you had your set less than 90 days they replace it with a new one, but after 90 your get a refurb. I was like what!?! The countdown begins, they said it could take up to 14 days I hope it's worth all this!

okay, i guess what i was remembering was this part of the cnet blog news entry by david k. and got 'software' and 'service menu adjustments' confused.

Intrepid owners who contact Samsung customer support (1-800-SAMSUNG) and persuade the representative that they need the upgrade (hint: claim the set is "defective" and mention a "loss of extreme shadow detail") might be able to get the company to send a tech out with a new board. But that's an even more imperfect method, in our opinion.

Bottom line: Samsung should offer the update, free of charge, to current A950 owners without having to hack into a service menu or navigate the customer service labyrinth

inanycase, seems like from reading mascior's post that samsung has got a reasonable solution now in the pipeline (though i think a better solution would be to acknowledge early-adopter's and replace their sets with new rather than refurbished as well). perhaps if enough noise is made calling customer service they will do so.

The link is always at the bottom of my posts.

For flat panels go to the second post in the thread. The list is alphabetical, by manufacturer, so Samsung LCD panels are near the bottom of post number two. All we have for the A950 line is the PDF posted by UMR in this thread.
