I doubt if they actually "eased up" on the 950, since the fine prints excluded not just the 81F but the 71F and 61F on the 10% one I had on print. The e-coupon seems to have been updated to not list the new Samsung series, but includes Sony OLED,XBR7 and XBR8s (which aren't even out yet!), which makes me wonder if all the new lineups are being upped on the price above MSRP. Even the senior staffer said that must have been an error but since "legally" they did not exclude it on the coupon they have to honor it. The fight will now be between BBY and Samsung when all these sets are selling with the coupons if there is going to be one.

But hey, who would want to buy the set TODAY at $5000-10% or -12%? Probably no one.... Given the XBR8 is around the corner with unconfirmed pricing?

$5000 for a 55 lcd tv?
are u crazy or what
my 67" DLP LED is just as good
It seems like the only difference between Samsungs 1st and 2nd gen LED screens is a faster control of individual LED zones.
If I read it correctly:

* 55" vs. 52" panel
* 120Hz w/AMP
* Faster control of LED Zones, which may have been necessary to support the 120Hz AMP

Just saw in the Sony thread the XBR8 listed at $4999 (46") and $5999 (55") in BBY system in case some one here is interested.

But the F81 has 10-bit? The F96, EU ver. of F81 came with 8-bit and CMO panel.

There's no mention of 10-bit for the A950 on Samsung's web site, in the spec sheet, or in the manual.

From the German translated quote I read, it implies both 81F and the A9 series have 10-bit panels as follows.

Quote:

The A9 has fewer than 100 - (+ x) LED zones (of course, can mean everything) and the improvement in the F96 is better 10bit panel, 100Hz and a faster control of individual LED zones.
RGB-LED´s kommen (noch) nicht zum Einsatz. RGB LEDs are not (yet) are used.

Thought folks might be interested in some info on the set's availability.

I've been pondering a replacement for my Sony SXRD XBR1 for some time now. As someone who knows how good an LED-backlit LCD can be (Macbook Pro), I am very interested in the 950.

I went to Abt yesterday to inquire on the set. They had an 81F on display, but no 950. The sales rep said they had sold all 15 55" 950s they had in stock, including the display set within a week.

They are receiving another 15 sets on 9/12, but 5 already have deposits applied against them.

I need to check at Tweeter...especially since I have a line of credit there.

The Tweeter I'm dealing with does not have the 950. They told me 2 to 3 weeks. I was going to drive up to ABT on Tuesday because a salesman told me Friday they had them on display. Your post saved me a long trip(Orland Park to Glenview) THANKS!

bby has the ln46a950 for $34xx. That seems to be way above the msrp. Look on the website.

You have to keep in mind that, despite the rave reviews the 81F received (the 950 will most likely receive the same), is that the majority of your "average Joe" consumers aren't going to be shelling out four plus thousand dollars for a television set of this size when they could easily acquire a DLP for half the price.

I know that the 81F wasn't carried at Circuit City, which considerably hurt exposure. I'm not sure if CC is going to carry the 950s yet or not.

I also remember reading how Samsung prohibited retailers to bargain or accept promotion coupons from customers when they were originally released. I'm not quite sure if these same rules apply to the 950, but if they're accepting coupons like some people are saying, they must have eased up a bit.

The 81F was also first-generation LED, which like most technologies, is something that many people initially feared investing in. Despite this, ironically, the AVS boards are rarely active because the user-base has very little to complain about - well, aside from getting the damned thing tweaked to your liking.

On another note, it sounds like the comparisons between the 81F and 950 are present, but not quite drastic enough for me to regret my 81F purchase several months ago

when I first seen the 81 at best buy it was playing a demo of a Japanese swordsman in a total black room and wow!
I wanted to buy one but didn't win the lotto so when black Friday came around i settled for a grand 46-64 sharp.
when the 81 was on a blow out sale I bought a 40 -81 (3 years no interest)149 over a grand is not bad.
I had to return the first set it developed a black line that went half way across the TV.
the sharp is OK but the 81 is a lot better.

Is ANYONE willing to pay above MSRP for a TV?

I couldn't see it, but I guess if you had the cash and it didn't impact your finances then you might not care...and, I if so...do you need a new friend?

HECK no man....I consider myself average in financial accomplishments...mortgage, car payment, school loan payments, grad school payments, wife is a teacher, I'm biding my time working in banking ftm.

I know I don't have any extra around, but enough to work up some for an msrp w/ a really good discount!

....now if only I could find a friend bored enough to pay the extra!....either that or manufacture enough time in my "controlled-out-of-control" to handle a part time job @ BBY.....right.... LOL!

I hear ya!
I think, as others have mentioned, BBY only upped the price so they can get around discount coupon that didn't exclude the models. It will probably go down after the coupon expires...

That's what I'm thinking...I wonder if they'll hold out until Oct. 1st. My wife was kind enough to stop by the PO and pick up 2 of those packets. I was surprised she remembered from me talking about it, relaying info from the forum. She stopped by on her way home from work last week. Hopefully we'll be able to use them once the price lowers.
Before BBY realized what was going on, I was able to use the 12% rewards coupon to get a great discount off of msrp.
If you actually have the coupons you should try to get them to honor it at MSRP now...the longer you wait to less likely the stores will dismiss that it was a corporate glitch to give you MSRP minus the coupon... Some stores will accept them if you can prove elsewhere MSRP is still what the old price is since they know what the price was just a few days ago when they first showed up on their system....

On the other hand it is possible it is no longer a glitch and that Samsung may have actually upped the MSRP after confirming what Sony is asking for the XBR8's and leaving the coupon field open with the new marked up MSRP... Which is better? New MSRP allowing coupon, or old MSRP not allowing coupon...hmmm...

Anyway we shall all see what spans and if new coupons printed after yesterday will exclude 950s or not....
12% coupon expired yesterday along with a few others at the end of the month.

I think it is an amazing tv so far. Watch prison break last night, looked fantastic.

I know in our area that Tweeter is carrying the 950 at msrp, so one could legitimately get BB to price match down to msrp, then try to use the coupon.
I got a feeling when the new 12% coupons come out, it will be excluded. The 81 was actually excluded. I couldn't believe that when I saw it. You'd figure they'd just want to get rid of whatever stock they had left for that model. I went to ABT and they still had it at MSRP.
A few people tried that before and price match does not allow use of coupons -- supposedly the fine print says not valid with other offers...and the store did refuse to apply price matched items with any of their coupons in the past as well.

Wouldn't it be great if you can take a price from somewhere large and reputable and say hey don't forget to gimme your 12% on that of matched price -- whatever that already is?

Oh wait! You got a FREE DELIVERY promo and a 20% off PS3 when you buy HDTV over $999? I want that included too. Holy cow...this other place is offering free ISF calibration can you include your Geeksquad calibration also?
