So the 850 series (and the 800 series) offer two options for screen refresh rates, 48 and 60 Hz (not megahertz, check out page 29 of the 850U manual here
), the former being optimized for 24p playback as it ostensibly avoids the judder caused by refreshing at rate that is not an even multiple of 24. With a refresh rate of 24 or 48 or 72 or 96 Hz you do not need to invoke the 3:2 pull down that causes judder.
The problem is that humans can generally discern a flicker in screens that refresh at <60 Hz and there are reviews out there commenting on the relative "unwatchability" of the 48 Hz setting used in the new 800/850 series. Your retinas have their own "refresh rate", which determines how well you can see things that are moving quickly. You can check out your own threshold for refresh rate sensitivity by playing with the rate on a computer monitor. 60 Hz is painful for me, 72 Hz is not bad and I have difficulty discerning differences above 76 Hz.
The UK series on the other hand have always offered higher refresh rates, up to 100 Hz (check out page page 37 of this manual
) and of course accept inputs with 24p signals. Panasonic has never officially commented whether these models display 24p content at 96 Hz or whether it is 100 Hz but none of the reviews out there have ever found any appreciable judder so the suspicion is that they offer true, high refresh rate, judder free playback of 24p content.
That's the longwinded explanation of why I'm interested in the UK models instead of the 8x0 series.
