The manual, btw, is totally uninformative
I have had this player for 10 days now and can give a little opinion here. I have a 2 channel system using the analogue outs so I won't be able to comment on the hdmi functionality.
I agree that the manual is worthless. The player has no menu system like the XA9000ES did so you just push the hard buttons for individual settings. The operation is smooth, quiet and runs cool. The player is very solid felling and still fairly heavy but you won't hurt yourself getting it in your rack.
I let the player repeat my IsoTek burn-in disc over night before doing any initial listening. First disc cued up was Diana Krall "The girl in the other room" sacd. The sound was hard, etched and focused like a laser. The burn-in disc went back on for three days straight before my next listen. Things are changing for the better! Same disc sounds much more natural and relaxed with an expanded soundstage in comparison to my initial listen.
Eight days straight with the burn-in disc, and a little music along the way, and the player is really starting to open up and smooth out. The sound has become more extended at both ends and much more natural sounding with the music rushing forward in a liquid manner.
Day ten with the player on repeat or playing constantly and things just keep getting better. The bass has acquired a thunderous low that was not there earlier. The highs are now airy and extended with sweet ease. The mids are smooth, liquid and oh so right. The entire sound has become much more balanced and presented with ease where earlier the player sounded like it was straining. The sound now completely fills my room with no apparent ties to the speakers. Cymbals and drums are so much more real sounding than with any previous player I have had. There is a quiet blackness between each instrument and note that I have had to get used to. It allows the music to be very dynamic and can surprise you, like make you jump if not expecting it.I fully expect the sound to continue to get better based on what I have observed so far.
I realize that no component is an island and all is system dependant. I have been using the SCD-XA5400ES with a MAC Source+ pc (with furutech plugs) and its single-ended output via Harmonic Tech. Pro-Silway III+ to a PS Audio C-100 control amp with Cullen stage three mods. MIT AVt1 bi-wire speaker cables then take the music to my Pioneer/TAD S-3EX speakers. This certainly isn't the best system out there but it is fantastic none the less.
I will be replacing the stock fuses with Hifi tuning 800ma fuses today and let them burn-in along with the player on repeat for another three days before listening again.
