I currently have 106" Dalite (DAL90271) with 1.1 gain and the throw distance is about 12 feet. The HS 51 can look gorgeous on bright scenes, but it really looks pretty poor in any dimly lit scenes and I've tried many settings, tuning disks, ...) but really have never been satisfied. It also has a problem with motion blur that I assume the HW 10 would not have. I realize this is not an easy question, but would appreciate advice as I contemplate upgrading.
I recently upgraded from an HS10 to a VW40, the main benefit is one of your points of dissatisfaction, the dark scenes, shadow detail. For the brighter scenes, you probably won't notice a huge difference. A couple other pluses for me were the near-silent operation (my HS10 was very noisy), the LCOS technology (I had to replace a burned out blue polarizing panel in my HS10), and true 1080p support (i.e. 24Hz and perfect 1080p feed from my HTPC with no overscan).
My guess is you'll have similar luck with an HS51 to HW10 upgrade. I'm not one to upgrade every year, but rather wait for 3-4 generations of product, then go for it. I think the VW40 will keep me happy for a while, hopefully until LED/laser projectors are reliable and affordable.
