Sony VPL-HW10 Just Arrived! - Page 23

I was just copied on the following eSupport Information regarding Sony Warranty Extensions on specific SXRD Products: Dated 10/24/08:

Certain 2006 Model Year SXRD Television Extended Warranty Information - Optical Block http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/new...pl?news_id=277

2004 Model Year Qualia Q006 Television Extended Warranty Information - Optical Block http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/new...pl?news_id=278

No such support program offers for any newer SXRD Front Projection products. However, I would assume Sony would provide similar warranty extensions on newer SXRD projectors if needed.

I got mine through BB for about $3150 using a 10% off coupon and received another $65 back in rewardzone dollars. The 10% coupons are out again and so is a triple you rewardzone points. So if one had these coupons you would get another $310 off and $195 back in rewardzone dollars. Not bad.

not bad at all! i was waiting till i could get one of these for $3000 flat before i pulled the trigger...i dont have any of that reward zone stuff so ill probly have to wait till the economy tanks a little more after the new year and sony gets a little more "reasonable" with their prices...i dont think $3500 is overpriced for this projector at all...but i know the price will drop after the new year, or soon thereafter........hopefully

While we are all probably trying to move up in projector capability, it is interesting on what is deemed expensive based on what one is upgrading from. For example, someone that had a sub $2K projector would probably see a $3500 projector as a step up in price as well as capability. While others like myself who bought a mid-level projector 5 years ago (I spent $6800 and felt like I got the best deal at the time) view the Sony as a step up in capability but half the price. So for me, it was an easy purchase but I can see how for others coming from the other direction it might be viewed differently.

Mind you, I don't have excess money to be upgrading every other year like some. My original purchase was part of a home refinance where I got an HT and my wife granite counter tops and a deck. Even after 5 years I upgraded a little sooner then expected because my color wheel was going out.

That's what I paid for mine, but by the time you added the mounting and tax, it was close to $4k, but that's what you get for buying local. However, I am very happy with the purchase.

Damn... according to the projector calculator I'm about 28cm out of range:

Projector is at: 460cm
Screen size: 235cm

Maximum range: 432cm

Moving the projector 28cm into the room isn't really an option...

But maybe the throw distance calculator is (slightly) wrong here? According to the Sony website a 100inch screen would allow the projector to be placed at up to 4.8m and the projector calculator says: 4.67...?

Hang on. What size screen are you trying to project? I'll open up the manual and tell you exactly what the manual says.

That's why I skipped on the Sony mount. I'm ending up retro-fitting a chief mount I already had for my Sharp projector instead. I also decided to use the Sony CC discount to get the 4 year extended warranty for $180.

I bought a Chief mounting system, including an adjustable bar, RPU and the ceiling mount.
it should be noted that the chief uses 1.5" NPT pipe which can be acquired quite cheaply
at any home improvement store (HD, Lowes, etc). even better, they'll cut custom
lengths and add pipe threads.

(probably much cheaper to use NPT or black pipe than the adjustable chief column)

Nice tip. What do you thread the pipe into at the ceiling?

You can buy a flange with holes to screw the flange to a wood cross member between the joyce.

or use one of the many chief mfg solutions

(depends on what the top end needs to attach to: joists, drop ceiling tile, etc.)

i've even seen u-bolts used to tie into the side of a joist.
I have installed plywood between joist so i can screw right up into it.

Yes, but any plumbing supply shop might have the flange.

From my past install experiences, you may wish to use a four-bolt flange. A two-bolt will be very susceptible to vibrating (thus blurring image) along its weak axis from low frequency sound (especially by the LFE from new HD soundtracks). If you extend projector more than 6 inches by pipe extensions a solid mount is paramount. I've found four-bolt designs such as the Chief CMA line work very well up to 24 inch 1-1/2" pipe extensions.

Ya, I should have mentioned that, too. You'll save quite a bit. I decided to go with the Chief version so I had the length adjustment and the nice, black finish on it. You could definitely save money by getting the right length and have it threaded for you @ home depot. I just decided to not go that route due to my installation parameters and want/needs.

I found a 4-bolt flange locally for about 6 bucks versus 30 bucks for the Chief part. For me, looks of that part are not important because it will be aboue my drop-in ceiling.
Can you move the screen closer? Mount the screen 28 cm or so off the wall?

Yup. my mount is a 3-bolt, which is enough for my application, and I have additionally secured it with grade 8 bolts, some construction adhesive and silenseal. The wood it's bolted onto will fail before the rest of it does, and the 3-bolt system doesn't vibrate at all for me.

That's not possible because my speakers would have to be moved closer to the wall then... which wouldn't be good for the audio quality

I wish that the HW10 had a better throw range, the price difference with the AE3000 is over €700 here.

don't forget that distance is screen to lense, not screen to mount point, so
in reality, the screen would only have to move a few inches vs nearly a foot.

also, depending on which screen is used, it probably doesn't sit directly at the same plane as the wall.
for example, my stewart screen stands about a inch off the wall due to it's wall brackets.

if you use a ceiling attachment like the cms391
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...4#post15242974

you can easily be able to move the mount forward

You are definitely outside of spec for a 100" screen. The max throw distance is 187" so the calculator is correct.
OK, thanks! The AE700 will just have to keep on working for a couple of months more until the AE3000 comes down in price or new Sony models arrive.

So I read through all 23 pages and didn't get the answer I was looking for! LOL I ordered this projector a few days ago based strictly on seeing it in Person. I currently have the Panasonic AE100u. This is a very bright projector. I use my projector for TV, Sports, Movies, and Games. My panasonic is taking a crap and I am not in warranty. I want to upgrade to 1080p. This sony has a beautiful picture on regular DVD.

My concerns are the brightness. My room is a great room, with two skylights that I have yet to get shades for, although I am in the process. All the other windows have shades that block out the light for the most part. My question is, how does this projector perform with moderate ambient light? I am struggling with this and ready to cancel my order, the problem is the brighter 1080p projectors are either real expensive or not as good picture. I know that any light diminishes picture quality, I guess the main question is:

Will this projector be watchable with some ambient light? I know the picture wont be as good, but is it bearable, I would sacrifice during the day so that I can enjoy the beautiful night time picture?? Will a higher gain screen help me in this situation??

Thanks and any info would be much appreciated!

I have quite a bit of ambient light and haven't done anything to cover the windows. Photo of my back wall.

IMO daytime viewing is a little washed out. I can watch a movie but it isn't great. I have 6 windows and a double glass door untreated. I would imagine a High Power screen might help. I currently have a focupix with 1.6 gain. I have a used Stewart Firehawk coming soon to try out. I don't watch much during the day especially in the winter. I might have to add window treatments and light control in the spring.
