I am confused about what I need. All I want to do is replay HD-DVD, blu-ray dvd, mkv, dvd folder rips.

What do I need ?

Do I need ffdshow ? If so, why, what does it do ?

Please help!

Use ffdshow for DVD. The same for mkv if it isn't a rip of your BD/HD-DVD. For HD-DVD/DVD, just use software like PowerDVD.

That if you need to use ffdshow (and MPC/ZoomPlayer) post-processing like deinterlacing or resizing. Else, just use PowerDVD if it suited you.

No, it's not just about image size & resolution. It's the quality of image. If you're satisfied with PowerDVD then by all means use it. But the quality of Theatertek+ffdshow comepare to PowerDVD is night & day when you view with HDTV.
