I'm not seeing that problem at all. DSD is being received by the Z7 from the source whether the TV is on or off.

Wired via HDMI from a Sony BDP-780 to the Z7, then output from the Z7 via HDMI to an older Samsung 52" monitor. Z7 is set to video pass-through only, no processing. In the advanced menu, set the audio input from the SACD/BDP player to HDMI only (not auto).

thank you NetDef! i was not able to make that pair work as expected. I contacted both support services, Yamaha provided some responses but ultimately, sent to Pioneer, Pioneer said they don't sell device in States

I ended up buying Sony BDP-S480 just to play SACD. Was finally satisfied

FYI there is a new firmware available for this receiver, v1.1.7. The instructions say it addresses issues with the Rhapsody service.

Mucho thanks, Yamaha!!!

Well, it seems that I spoke WAY too soon.

Audio and video dropouts are worse than ever. Even applied Yamaha's latest FW update with no effect.

Pretty darned certain that it's an issue with my SA 8300 HDC cable box . . .

I see this has been asked before. I didnt see an answer I understood.

How can I make the subwoofer play when just playing stereo 2 channel?

2.1? Can I do that with large speakers selected?

Thanks for any help,

Douglas

There should be a double bass option or something like that but if not you can always run a RCA cable out from your front channel pre-out.
The subwoofer outputs are deactivated in Pure direct mode (it kills all signal processing - including YPAO, I think - but I haven't tested that). You have to use the preamp outputs to enable your sub to work in that case. Best to mix the signals form L+R.
I thought that if you set your L/R speakers to small, you will get the subwoofer in stereo. If your L/R speakers are set to large, or if you use Pure Direct then your sub is not used.

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure I grock any of them but my speakers are set to large... Thanks again, will try to figure out y'all meant!

Hi all - I am having the audio dropouts <=1 sec on almost all sources intermittently. All my sources are connected via HDMI and have the latest firmware on Z7. One thing in common was that these dropouts are more pronounced when Z7 receives DD and DTS signals from my sources. Can someone please share their thoughts/suggestions? Appreciate your help!

Hi everyone,

I have owned my Z7 for about 3 years now & have been very happy with it.
I recently thought about upgrading to the A3010 but when I spoke to the guy in the shop where I bought my Z7 from he basically said there was no real advantage except for the 3D pass through & some extra HDMI inputs. So I bought an Oppo BDP-93 player which has two HDMI outs to get around the 3d issue that way instead.

I currently have a 5.1 set-up using Krix speakers (Aussie brand) which have given me great service & been terrific value for money.

However I have got that itch again & am looking at adding an external amp for the front channels & buying new fronts. The front speakers that I have decided on are the Focal Diablo Utopias which I have listened to in a couple of different settings & with a few different amps. They will stretch the budget I think that they will be worth it.

My uncertainty lies a little more on the amp side of things. As I still intend to use my Z7 as a pre-amp (not in preamp mode, just RCA out for the fronts) the dealer that I have been talking to has recommend that I look at buying an integrated power amp instead of a straight power amp. He says that when I just want to listen to 2 channel stereo I can run an anlog output from the Opp directly into the integrated, thus bypassing the Z7, which he believes will sound superior. Having listened to it, I would have to agree with him wholeheartedly. However I still have some reservations about buying an integrated amp. Integrated volume control for instance raises a few questions.

The Z7 will still be running the centre, surrounds & sub for TV / HT, with the Oppo hooked up via HDMI. One of the integrated amps I am considering has a HT passthrough option, which basically turns it into a straight power amp allowing you to control the volume via the Z7.

I've narrowed it down to three Musical Fidelity amps, the M6-500i, AMS-35i or the AMS-35p. All sound awesome with the Diablos, the AMS options are more expensive but have a very effortless, silky sound. Sure wont need any heating during winter if I decide to go that way though!

So after all this rambling what I am looking for is any advice or experience from people who may have already played around with external amplification & the Z7. I can see that there are a number of members who have done it. Are there any obvious do's & dont's? How does the Z7 stack up when paired with a more audiophile level external? I realise that in the end it's still going to boil down to budget & "what sounds good to me" but I would be interested in hearing other people's experience in this area if anyone as time.

Thanks heaps

Not sure if anyone can shed any light..

I ran network firmware update this morning and the Z7 is now firmware 1.17.
I can only see 1.16 on their website for download, is anoyone aware of what 1.17 brings to the table?

Just searched the Aussie website.. USA shows 1.18 is current US version, 1.17 is current Aussie version.

Hi Everyone,

I have an issue, maybe some of you guys can help me out. Last night we had some storms roll through that had some nasty lightning.. I unplugged everything and The receiver was working fine when I did that..
This morning, i went to turn on the tv and receiver and can't get any of the HDMI components to play video or sound through the receiver. I can see the on screen display and see it switching the different
componentsbut nothing comes on. I tried resetting the receiver, still nothing, I tried different hdmi cables and nothing. If I use component cables everything work fine.. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks,

Tim

Hey Tim - do you live in Ft. Bend County, TX, by any chance?

I live in the Greatwood development (in Ft. Bend County) and we had a WHALE of a storm roll through right at 5:30 PM, just after I had arrived home from work. Scared my 11 YO daughter worse than Ike, I think.

Anyway, like a dummy I continued to listen to my i-Pod through the Z7 while the storm raged and lightning kept hitting close by.. It started getting so bad and I kept losing power that I thought the better of it and started shutting everything down, but too, late - my Z7 took a "hit" and after the storm passed it would NOT fire up. I was pi$$ed at myself for not shutting things down sooner and already trying to decide on getting the Z7 repaired or ordering up a RX-A3020, LOL.

Long story short, I got out the Z7 manual and looked at trouble shooting section and found that after a suspected lightning strike it said to unplug it for 30 seconds, then re-try it. Voila - that worked, thank goodness.

Oh, back to your question - sure sounds like your HDMI board got zapped. That sucks . . .

"KeepCold"

I have a couple Yamaha Amps (Z7 and a V4600). They both have a somewhat similar configuration menu system.

I had the V4600 serviced a month or so ago and when I got it back, nothing seemed to work. I had forgotten that I had changed things around on the Amp over the years I had it.

What I had to do to get things going again, was to reset my I/O Assignment parameters.

You may have to go into the Setup > Option > I/O Assignment [Enter].

May not be a solution, but it's a good place to start.

I tried going in and reassign and reset the I/O assignments but had no luck, I also went in and did a complete reset of the receiver, but that didn't help either... Hope its covered under warranty..

Thanks

Hey Lloyd,

We are in a suburb of Chicago, but sounds like the same storm, nasty lightning and sounded like a freight training running through my house...
I tried unplugging also but that didn't work, you would think if the HDMI board was fried I wouldn't be able to see the on screen menu through the HDMI..

Thanks for the suggestions guys,

Slight attempt to revive an old thread...so I've had my z7 for a few years (came from an onkyo 806 which had thx modes) I still can't find a good DSP to matrix 5.1 content to 7.1...any suggestions

Depending on what I'm watching and I'm now also running presence speakers.

Movies and most TV - Spectacle
Concerts or Recorded TV with music/singing: Music Video

If I have 7.1 and add front highs, would it switch between front highs and rear surrounds based on content?

For a standard 7.1 setup with side and rear surrounds I would use Dolby PLIIx. To select that you have to change the EXTD SUR. setting from the default AUTO to, for example, PLIIx Movie. The Z7 remote has a dedicated button labelled EXTD SUR. to cycle through the settings (other models didn't have this button and it was a bit tricky to find it in the menus).

I know I'm different - but I prefer to use the "7 channel enhancer" for all sources on my RX-Z7 7.1 system, no matter the original mix.

Thanks for the input! I'll have to give that a shot when I get a chance

I'm pretty sure the 7-channel enhancer works the same as 7-channel stereo, in that it first downmixes to stereo and then just replicates those channels to the other speakers. So it really is not good with a discrete 5.1 or 7.1 source, because it throws away most of the directional information.

Nothing is Auto so short answer is No.

I've got my SB wired in with SL & SR so they are still getting utilized. You then need to make appropriate changes to the settings in the GUI.

Agreed.

I do need to experiment some more when I'm watching a source with 5.1 or 7.1 audio.

Thanks!

Has anyone tried using the AV Controller App (either Android or Apple)? I am unable to connect. Do I have to do upgrade to the latest firmware? I would appreciate some feedback for those who are using the app. I'm dissapointed to learn that network streaming of audio directly from your device (Android or Apple) is not supported for the Z7. (I guess I will have to continue using bluetooth, unless someone has found other options.) TIA for any advice.
I just bought a used Z7 that will be used as a Pre/Pro. However, after installing the latest firmware update, the net light indicator stays on while the unit is powered off. Is this normal?

Thanks,

Al
