Does anyone use a TV Tuner in their computer and hook it up with their FIOS service? What card do you have and how does the FIOS get to it?
Thanks

Thanks

The card I mentioned in my post above is an Avermedia A180, connected by coax from the main splitter in the house. Stock drivers from Win7. Because of the poor job FIOS does with PSIP, it is essentially useless.

are there any cards that I should look at that would work with the FIOS service?

I don't know - have not played with Win7 a lot yet and am far from a Media Center expert. I'd ask over in the Green Button forums.

If the PSIP data were better, it would help - IMHO, Vz has really dropped the ball here. As it is, you have to manually add the channels to MCE and then tune by QAM numbers instead of the virtual numbers. Have no idea how that would work with recording.

I'm sure that the upcoming Ceton cards with a Cablecard will work just fine with FIOS - when they come out next year.

The staff of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission recommends state regulators reject the proposed sale of Verizon's landline residential and commercial telephone business in Washington to Frontier Communications.

Good! I've been concerned, since the sale announcement, that Frontier doesn't have the resources to continue to operate as Verizon has been here.

This was just the staff recommendation - the three regulators still have to vote next year.

I would imagine that the lobbying will be even more intense now...

A link to the Commission news release is here, it contains this if you want to comment directly:

The commission has received 93 public comments with five in favor, 40 undecided and 48 opposed to the proposed sale. Customers who would like to comment on the case are encouraged to do so by mailing their correspondence to: P.O. Box 47250 Olympia, Wash., 98504; e-mail comments to comments@utc.wa.gov or call toll-free 1-888-333-9882. The commission's deadline for accepting public comments is Jan. 11, 2010.

Anyone heard anything about plans to provide KBTC in HD, now that they are broadcasting in HD? The current FiOS feed is a centercut monstrosity.
I contacted someone at Verizon and received a reply that KBTC is secondary in the Seattle-area market and so there are no plans to carry it in HD.

I'm also looking for information about Fios TV in Bellevue, WA. Talking to the FSC (fiber tech support for verizon) my home is fully video capable, but they still aren't able to sell to me. Anyone have any info?

I'd ask at Bellevue City Hall - the city needs to reach a franchise agreement with Verizon first - or Frontier if they wait until next year.

I think Verizon ceased negotiating new franchise agreements once the sale to Frontier was announced. A franchise agreement between Verizon and the City of Sammamish disappeared from the Sammamish City Council agenda immediately after the sale was announced.

No point in investing money and effort for medium- to long-term gain if you are in the process of selling an asset. I can't imagine any new franchise agreements happening until after the sale to Frontier is complete. After that, the $64,000 question is whether Frontier has any interest and/or money to invest in further FiOS expansion. They may choose to restrict themselves to supporting existing territory rather than investing in expansion to additional areas such as Bellevue and Sammamish.

I suspect you are correct, but the Bellevue council office can confirm for the OP.

I just received a very detailed response from David Kerr, IT Manager for the City of Bellevue. It appears you are correct, they're sitting on it until the Frontier deal goes through (sometime next year at the earliest).

Subject: Verizon FiOS Question CRM:01910014

I know this is disappointing, but the FiOS system in Bellevue will not be able to offer cable service until sometime next year, at the earliest. In order to provide Cable TV they need a Cable Franchise, and they are not actively pursuing one since they announced they are selling their system in Bellevue. Even then we don't know if the new provider, Frontier Communications, will pursue a franchise to provide cable .

Verizon submitted an application for a cable franchise, but from the start, the negotiations on the franchise were an on again, off again, on again process and now they are off again. After our first few initial meetings, Verizon turned its attention north to Snohomish County and started negotiating franchises up there. We didn't hear from them for many months while they slowly worked south and eventually got back to Bellevue.

Towards the end of last year, Verizon again approached the City of Bellevue and we started a regular schedule of meetings with Verizon. We met every two weeks for a 3 or 4 hour negotiation session on the franchise document. However, that activity suddenly stopped and we haven't met with Verizon since late February. Then last May, Verizon announced that they are selling their system assets to Frontier Communications.

When we inquired, Linda Fogg, Manager - External Affairs, Verizon Northwest Inc. sent an e-mail (August 5th) that said:
Quote:
I've been advised that Verizon sent the City of Bellevue a letter confirming Verizon has announced plans to spin off the wireline business in WA to Frontier Communications, including those within the City of Bellevue. They also advised that it is not Verizon's intent to abandon the pending application with the City of Bellevue. Verizon requested the City keep open the pending application for a cable franchise. Verizon has disclosed to Frontier that there is currently no cable franchise agreement in place with the City of Bellevue. After the close of the sale to Frontier, that company will have to determine how it wants to proceed with respect to cable service in the City of Bellevue. The expectation at this point is it will take between 9 and 12 months from the time the sale was announced in mid-May of this year for the transaction to receive all the necessary regulatory approvals at the state, FCC and FTC etc.

If you'd like to contact me again around March or April 2010, I may have more information to share at that point in time. It is still early in the process.

Thank you for your interest in Verizon's FiOS product.

Regards,

At this time the City of Bellevue consideres the Verizon fanchise application as withdranc and canceled. That is the best and most recent information.

Is there one report or study or review that claims Comcast beats FIOS?

I don't know how many HD channels Comcast has, but I'd say I'm watching a HD channel on Comcast about 98% of the time. I think I read that Fios has more HD movie channels. For me, as long as the premiums and IFC are HD I'm fine, as it's rare that there's a movie I haven't seen and want to see on another channel, HD or not. I have not switched to Fios because it does not offer a Canadian station (Comcast has CBUT in its Limited plan) and does not offer CSNW (Comcast Sports Northwest) which shows Pac 10 sports and the Blazers' games. As for clarity, I can't tell the difference between Comcast and my OTA.

I just switched to FIOS from Comcast and had a couple of days to compare - FIOS wins hands down on HD. The difference really shows up on the premium and non-local channels. (Neither company seems to mess with local channels much)

FIOS does have Comcast Sports NW on its lineup.

I'm in Shoreline (Innis Arden specifically) and they're on my street this week running the infrastructure - woohoo!

Anybody have a ballpark estimate of how long from fibre being laid at the street to having service?

I'm in Richmond Highlands, a few blocks NW of Aurora & 185th. It was 85 days from fiber in front of my house to install. The key dates for my neighborhood (yours may vary) were:

June 1
- underground 'trunk' line went in 1 block west
July 1
- aerial lines in neighborhood
July 15
- splicing trucks show up
Aug 1
- splicing seems complete in surrounding area
- get FIOS mailer saying call to order, am told they will call after Sept 6
Sept 24
- online ordering possible
Oct 2
- FIOS installed
Oct 5
- FIOS salesman rings doorbell to see if I want to sign up

I posted details of my install in another thread.

Nice - that's for the detailed timeline. I'm on 10th Ave NW just north of Innis Arden Way (down past Shoreview park). We have all underground utilities, so they've been trenching and running the cabling underground. My biggest concern about the whole process is getting service from the street to my house - its a very atypical lot. There is a conduit for Verizon POTS cabling from the service box as the base of the driveway to the house, but I don't know if there's enough capacity for any additional cabling.

Time will tell
Back in June they had a contractor on my street putting in new conduit for all homes that were not serviced overhead. They did this for all homes, not just those ordering FIOS.

Is it part of a premimium package on Fios, which I believe it is on Comcast. I told a co-worker I watched the Cougs-Ducks game on it last week and he said he couldn't find it on his Fios.

CSNW came in pretty handy for the Grey Cup as it simulcasted TSN's production.

Has anyone heard if FIOS will be adding Fox Soccer Channel HD? I heard the station should be available this month.

So I just got FIOS TV here in Woodinville. ClearQAM doesn't seem to be working in Win7 Media Center. Has anyone had any luck getting this working?

I'm in Shoreline and ran into the same problem. Here is how I fixed it.

1. Follow the normal setup steps to scan for channels. It will report nothing found.
2. Follow the menus - Settings:TV:Guide:Edit Channels
- check each ClearQAM channel (those without a 'lock' icon)

At this point, you'll be able to tune to each channel, but without guide listings. To get the correct listings, you'll need to identify each QAM channel with a call sign (KOMO, KIRO etc.). Make a list of the channels you want to watch and their call signs.

3. Go back into Edit Channels. Uncheck the ones you don't want to watch (Shopping or SD for example). For the ones you want to watch, click on each channel number - then choose Edit Listings.

4. On the Channel Listing screen you can type the call sign of the channel to scroll to the correct point in the list. Click on the correct item in the list to link it to the channel.

That should fix things up for you.

I don't know why this happens, can anyone shed any light on this issue?

KBTC-DT is now carried in HD on channel 528.

Wonder when they'll get rid of KPST (currently dark).

Do anyone know if Fios is passing the tv guide on screen data (tgos)?
I have been going back and forth with Pioneer since April on why the plasmas tgos is not working
