The "official" The Onkyo TX-SR706 Owners Thread - Page 47

I tested both HDMI cables by connecting them to my TV directly from my PS3. They both worked. I also connected my PS3 straight to my projector with no problems.
What I mean by "default" on the PS3 is when turning it on, holding the power button until it beeps twice, which automatically selects the audio and video output settings.
As for the 706, I have tried "Through", "Auto", "720p", and "480p" in the hardware settings. I also properly set up the HDMI input settings which are shown on page 42 of the owner's manual.

I am not familiar with the PS3.

What are the default output settings?

Can they be changed? Have you tried other settings?

What version HDMI is the PS3? The 706 is version 1.3. Possibly a handshake problem between the two?

Now for a dumb question - Is the 706 turned ON when you are trying all this? Even in Through mode the 706 must be turned on to pass video. That was actually discussed here some time ago.

Okay, I have seemed to fix the problem by powering off my PS3, then the 706, then turning the PS3 on before turning the 706 on. This was the first thing I should have thought of, and feel like a complete tool now. Thanks for the help bluesky and kplex.

Greetings....Noobie with TX-SR706. I just bought and set the unit up with existing speakers and other components. My biggest complaint that I can't seem to remedy is that the receiver powers up to the Game/TV input for some reason. No, there are no connections to that input. My desire would be that it powers up set to HDMI 3 which is my HD Cable box. Is there a way that I can program this to occur? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Are you using the remote to power on the 706? Do you get the same result if you press the On/Standby on the receiver?

Are you using an RI Dock or a multi-room controller?

Have you programmed macros on the Onkyo remote?

Also, can you list your existing components and connections?

I have the same thing with my mac mini connected via DVI>HDMI. What also works for me is switching to another input and then back.

It might be related to having Power-Control/TV-Control enabled in the Setup. Your TV could be automatically selecting the Game/TV input.

I just purchased a 706 receiver. I have a PS3 playing DVDs and Blu-rays and a Panasonic AX-100 projector. Does anyone have an answer why it seems that some films have on-screen volume and some don't? It seems that when I play Blu-rays, I cannot see the volume on-screen, but when I play DVDs I see the on-screen volume change? Any thoughts? I hope this has not been extensively discussed.

I don't have any macros set up on my NAD HTRM remote. I power everything on individually. My 706 comes up with whatever input was selected previously

Hey WTF.....I just tried the On/Standby button on the receiver and it came up with the last input which was Cab/Sat. This is what I want. When I use the remote, it goes to game/TV. Odd....

Other components....Samsung DLP via HDMI from the 706. Sony Blu-Ray HDMI #1 to the 706. Comcast/Motorola HD/DVR box to HDMI #3. Also have a cheapo DVD-R via component cable, no iPod dock. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Hawk

You might try a reset of the remote.

PG. 103

While holding down the [RECEIVER] button, press and hold down the [AUDIO] button until the [RECEIVER] button lights up (about 3 seconds). Within 30 seconds, press the [RECEIVER] button again. The [RECEIVER] button flashes twice, indicating that the remote controller has been reset.
Did the remote reset per your advice. Same result...when I turned the receiver on with the remote, it went to Game/TV input. Maybe I should swap the cable box to a different HDMI input?

I would try the IN 2 (VCR/DVR) and reassign your cable box.

What inputs do you have your DVD-R connected to?

If all else fails, you might also try a reset of the 706 if you're up for it.
Turns out it was the Power Control/TV Control. Turned that off and it seems as if all is well. Thanks for all of the advice......until my next clueless issue.....thanks!

For one thing, you won't get OSD over 24fps video signals. If your PS3 is set for 1080p 24fps, try disabling 24fps in the PS3 setup.

I will be upgrading to a full 7.1 system this weekend.

I am curious to know people's personal experiences using DPLIIx to create 7.1 channels from a 5.1 source. Some questions:

1. How well does it work?
2. Do you like how it sounds?
3. Is there any decrease in separation between the discrete 5.1 channels.
4. Does it do anything adverse (or anythign at all) to a true 7.1 source?
5. I am assuming that the signal in the rear is mono (making it really 6.1 channels) or does it really derive two channels in the rear?
6. Any affect on Dolby Digital EX or DTS ES Discrete sources?

I have read Dolby's description on their website, but like I say, I am more interested in personal experience than marketing hoopla.

If there is an AVS forum thread on this subject, I apologize, and hopefully someone knows the link to it. TIA.

It works well, it just matrixs the information to the 2 rear surrounds. much like the effect of creating information for rears from a 2 channel source.

In a room where you can set all the speakers up properly yes. My room was kind of small and I found there wasn't a enough difference to warrant adding the rear surrounds but if you have the room for proper placement it can add a dimension to the theater.

No, the other speakers are not effected.

No, your receiver will still see a 7.1 signal send it as discrete 7.1.

Yes it's mono but your mind can play tricks on you and you'll swear it's not at times.

Nope, the information will be sent to the proper channels.

Thanks, Jakeman02. That's good info.

Any comments from anyone else?

Here's a different question:

Has anyone tried using DTS Neo:6 with DTS sources? Wondering if it would be better to match DDPLIIX to Dolby sources and DTD Neo:6 to DTS sources. Also it is not clear from the 706 owner's manual if Neo:6 works on multichannel sources or just stereo sources.
Well, I finished my upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 this morning at 4:00 am after starting last night at 11:00 pm.

Got all the rear speakers rearranged and Audyssey calibrated (house is much quieter at 2:00 am).

Set all the Listening Mode defaults in the 706 to DPLIIX + THX Movie or Music (as appropriate) and ran some tests. The difference is quite noticable. Instead of discrete sound sources in the rear, there is more of a "curtain" of sound around and behind me. Front/back and rear side/side pans are much smoother, sounding more continuous instead of jumping from speaker to speaker. The 706 provides a lot of flexibility in setting everything up.

Still doing a little tweaking in the surrounds. Front LCR and subwoofer have been locked in from previous Audyssey calibrations, but now I have FOUR speakers instead of two to tweak to my hearing. I usually end up between +1 and +2 db up from what Audyssey calculates the surrounds to be.

I'm also debating on moving the rear surrounds slightly closer together. The side surrounds (Def Tech BP2X bipoles)are on the back of the side wall, two feet from the rear wall so I get direct sound from the front angled set of drivers and reflected sound from the rear pair. The rear surrounds are Polk direct radiators at the same height as the sides (about 92 inches from the floor) and about 2.5 feet from the side wall. I'm considering moving them in by about another 6 inches or so.

I only have one 7.1 BD right now (Hell Boy II) but it sounds great. Everything else sounds really good expanded from 5.1 to 7.1. The DVD of Cream at Royal Albert Hall (2005) sounds like a live concert. Amazing.
I got my 706 yesterday and thought I would be sending it back because Audyssey would not send any tones through my lef rear surround channel but I remembered that someone had let their 706 "bake" for a few days so I left it alone.

Imagine my surprise when today after pkugging a powered antenna into the receiver that the left rear channel started working and I ran Audyssey just fine.

It's been a while since I posted, but I am at the point of _)(*^&_*^_(*^ frustration. I've had a terrible ac hum when receiving my hdmi input from my cable box which I've since switched out 2x. I get NO hum from the ps3 or roku box. If I had a ground loop you'd think it would show up on ALL inputs yes?

Please advise here or in email, hesynergy@newwavecomm.net, your latest input re ac hum on the 706.

Thanks,

Chas

Ground loops won't necessarily affect all inputs.

Phono inputs were notorious for ground loops made worse by the small signal levels involved.

You said: "I've had a terrible ac hum when receiving my hdmi input from my cable box which I've since switched out 2x."

Does that mean you have switched out the cable box twice? Have you switched HDMI cables? How do you have the individual componenets plugged in? Are you going through any kind of power line conditioner?

I plug all sources into a Rotel RLC-900 Line Conditioner. My 706 is plugged directly into the wall as is the RLC-900. I am using hospital grade outlets. My tv and sub plug directly into the wall on another circuit. No problems with any sort of hum.

Well... I got the 706 wired up to my 5.1 system and after Audyssey calibration and a few minor tweaks, I am happy to report that the sound is absolutely amazing.

I have some minor issues with the way this thing handles HDMI video... the constant losing sync whenever I switch inputs.... I am assuming this is a handshake issue but it was not a problem with my $40 Monoprice 5x1 switcher!

Also, the OSD doesnt work through Component Video out for my Cablevision DVR.... some might ask why would u even want to use Component Video out when u could just upscale through the HDMI?

Well the short answer is I need to add some overscan to my DVR input and if I do so through HDMI, then I will find myself constantly applying and removing whenever I switch sources... keeping the DVR isolated to the Component Video input makes it much simpler to apply it and leave it.

However, sound blows my old Yamaha HTR-5950 out the water.... whole different league, this Onkyo is! I cant wait to convert my 5.1 setup to 7.1!!!

FYI... my Onkyo TX-SR706... $621 shipped from Amazon.

OSD only works through the HDMI Out. Its in the manual

I noticed that Amazon was selling the 706 the other day for only $50 under suggested retail. A 1% savings! I paid $545 a few months ago. Amazing how wildly the prices vary.

Just pulled the trigger on one yesterday opted for just the receiver instead of the htb 7100 now i just need to save up for some good speakers as for now i will have to use the satellites from my logitech thx cert 5500 setup i was thinking about buying two polk sw10's to handle the deep stuff or should i look for one sub that equals the price of the two?

I'm not a active member of this forum, but found this thread by doing a google search to research a problem that i recently had. I purchased a SR706 from Amazon to power a 5.1 home theather and whole home audio in December 2008. On Friday 4-10-09. The unit caught fire. I have posted htis same post under a different thread that reports fire issues for their Onkyo receivers, but thought i would post here to see if anyone else has had a similar problem. Here is how it happened.

I turned on the receiver, TV and DVD using the remote, so that my 6 year old daughter could watch a movie. Everything turned on ok, but after about 20 seconds or so i noticed the receiver had shut down. The red light "standby" was flashing and i manually turned on the power switch and that is when the receiver shot sparks out of the top left side of the unit followed by 3-4 inch flames that lasted 15-20 seconds of course followed by smoke.

This unit had not run at all on this day, so it was cold at start up. I have the unit placed in a 24" deep cabinet and have it stack as the top unit above a DVD and Saletlite receive due to the heat that I knew this unit created. There is about 16 inches of clearance on top of the unit and was always operated with cabinet doors open.

Anyway, since i had read the discussion thread on this AVS forum thought that i would post my experience so that some of you Technical guys might be able to learn from or give me feed back. I called Onxyo this morning and I am sending the unit it for service, hopefully full replacement since who knows what was damaged. I was a bit surprised at the indiference that the Onkyo rep had, but I'm sure they have heard it all. I'm glad that i was the one who hit the power switch and not my daughter. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks
Aaron

Yea, when I purchased it I considered the current market climate and pricing. I saw it going for as much as $899 and even more so after considering a few Denon units and disqualifying the Yamaha 665 due to it's flimsy weight, I settled on this baby because of it's glowing Sound/Vision review and the feature package.

WOW... this is most unfortunate. I am happy that neither you or your daughter were harmed in anyway....

I know many people on this thread will chime in saying that their unit has worked fine for the 20+ years that they've had it.... but being a new owner and seeing that this has happened to atleast one other person before, I am a bit apprehensive about keeping this unit...

My unit is on the top glass shelf of a rack with nothing above it or on the sides of it.... nothing but air surrounding it as my rack is not enclosed at all.

hmmm.... alot to think about....
