Well... I can only speak for myself. Many on this site have had problems related to:
  1. Buying a refurbished unit
  2. Running component out
  3. Running a wii or PS3

I'm running pure HMDI 1.3a cables (in and out) from monoprice.com. One exception is I had to hook my JVC [VCR/HDD/DVD Recorder] via component, since it was made pre-HDMI. It seems to run fine as well. Don't really use it except to copy mini-DV tapes to DVD.

I'm still running the same Definitive Technology BP10 fronts and they sound like completely new speakers. They sounded good before, but actually sound like new (more depth and definition) speakers. My surround modes are FAR superior now to the Yamaha that I had before. The Yamaha was one step down from the top of the line (at the time) and actually cost more than the 706.

Since everything is running through the Onkyo... I SWEAR that the blacks are like velvet. Incredible! For instance the black strips on the refs uniforms... look like black velvet. I'm running a 65" Mitsubishi 1080P rear projection. All I can say it since I hooked up the Onkyo... my sound and my picture have BOTH been great surprises. I expected better sound... did not expect a better picture.

My friends know me as "the research guy"... this was one of the best decisions (regarding my AV system) that I've made.

Good luck... and please don't bother buying a refurb..... trouble my man.

I'm very happy to hear that you are not having problems! Do you have the HDMI set for passthrough or are they upscaling the video signal to 1080P?

I'm looking to purchase a new 706 or 806 but turned off by the blue dots issue. If they are non-existent with the HDMI set to passthrough, that's okay with me since my projector has a decent scaler. Thanks for your input.

from what i understand the blue dots issue is only when u have on screen display turned on... Im defintley not buy refurbished .. That would be a joke..

But yea the 706 doesnt seem to have thr buzz issue like the sr606 and i can add this reciever only by adding like 160$ to the 380$ that im geting for my sr606

Just to confirm from the owners... These blue dots are present when the reciever is setto Passthrough and the on screen display is set to off right?

Theres defintley no better reciever than this one in the 600$ price range, theres the denon 2809ci but it costs 800$ for no reason... It doesnt have anything that justifys that price

Yes I have my HDMI Output Resolution set to Through as explained on page 92. THX recommends this setting.

That really is great to hear! I'm going to order one next week to replace my Onkyo SR800 (old school).

I play iTunes through an Airport Express but I cannot seem to find a mode that enables the subwoofer. Am I missing a setting somewhere that enables the subwoofer when the source is only stereo?
Have you tried setting the crossover on your front speakers? 60-80Hz crossover is frequently recommended for large speakers.

Also try the PL II Music sound format, which uses the sub. I like the effect for most music.
owners can u please tell us how u like this reciever a little more.. so far from what i understood, if OSD is enabled, blue spots will indeed come up but if its turned off and the reciever is set to PASSTHROUGH then there is absoloutly no problems..

Huh, just checked and I had it set to PL II Music but the sub's light was red before and is green now. You might be right that I need to putz with the crossover settings. I just printed off the big-*ss list of instructions for the sub that someone posted on this thread elsewhere. I'll have to run through it all.

Thanks!

Im trying to sum up what the problems to expect are, if you OSD is enabled, then blue artifacts will appear, if its turned off then it should be fine, what else should i look out for?

I think you've summed it up... At least I hope the blue dots are the only problem and they can be avoided by disabling OSD and setting HDMI to through. Perhaps a cable shorter than 10' may be required as well.

What is the latest FW?

I have no video artifacts with my setup -- Bluray, HDDVD, and upconverting DVD into 706 via HDMI, all 1080p/60, Roku Netflix player at 720p via HDMI, and HD cable STB via component at 1080i/60, all inputs set for passthrough with OSD on, output to PJ via 50-ft Monoprice HDMI cable.

I dont know if i should pull the trigger on this reciever, i already have sr606 which i can sell for 380 locally, do u think its worth it or its the same reciever ? Im not getting much feedback/support from the owners in thi thread and i cant tell if i should pull the triger or not..

My sr606 doesnt equalize the subwoofer channel, it is not thx certified, thats about it.. Other than that it works flawlessly..

Dude! Including this post.. you now have 537 posts to read through... How many more posts do you need? No one can make the decision for you. Read through ALL the posts.. and/or possibly seek another forum. It's really not a life altering decision... it's just a receiver.

There are other differences. I'll get you started on your homework.

Thanks, this reciever is too awesome to pass on, i think im gonna order it tommorow from abt for $530 shipped brand new. i have a question, the THX modes make a difference right? and do u guys like it?

And one more question, im soley using the reciever for AUDIO, i dont need all that upcoversion stuff, the only video component im using is the PS3 cuz i HAVE TO, i connect an hdmi cable from the PS3 to the reciever in order to get HD sound other than that.. the xbox360, cable box are all hooked up with Optical.

I should be fine right? its just a much nicer overall recievr than the SR606,

Do u guys like the THX listening modes?

Well, you actually are intending to use this receiver for much more than "solely" audio. You do this just by connecting your PS3,360, and cable box to it.

If you plan to connect some devices to the receiver via optical inputs, I'll assume that you will most likely make video connections that are not HDMI. So the fact that the 606 will only upconvert to 1080i may be of interest to you.

I'm not sure what you're driving at in regards to THX. It is what it is. Someones opinion is hardly a measure to whether you will like it or not.

At the very least, you will be blown away by the blue-glowing volume knob.

Enjoy the receiver!

I just wanted to add, holy cr@p! I read the thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...5#post14456895) for calibrating the system but this time read the subwoofer manual, compared it to the instructions and then recalibrated the speakers. Huge difference. It sounded great before but much richer now. Still, I barely understood a word in the last part of the instructions.

Good to hear! Good stuff and knowledgeable posters in that forum.

Enjoy your system.

HAHAHAHA im sure i will fall in love with the blue light.

You didnt understand what i ment tho, i dont need to use the reciever as an upconverter or any video switch BY ANY MEANS. i am using the reciever for audio, what i mean by that is that My Xbo360 is connected to the reciever via Optical, my Cable box is connected to the reciever via optical aswell. HOWEVER, both the XBO360 and the Cable Box are connected DIRECTLY into the TV via HDMI. so its like that.. HDMI for video and Optical for Audio.

For the XBOX360 its NOT possible to use the HDMI as a one cable solution because the XBOX360 doesnt NOT transfer 5.1 dolby digital info via HDMI, yes i know its really stupid but oh well.. it just doesnt.. so a tweak needs to be done and thats by connecting an HDMI cable for the video and a seperate optical for audio and then u have the xbox360 with HDMI and 5.1 Sound.

Then im only left with my PS3, where blueray watching and high def movie watching kicks in. thats where i need take advanatge of the DOLBY TRUEHD and Higher resolution audio and so im FORCED to plug a single HDMI cord from the PS3 into the reciever, for both video and audio, i would much prefer to plug a direct hdmi cable for video into to the tv rather than to the reciever to recieve a completely pure signal you know but i dont have a choice this time of pluging an optical cable for sound because i must use HDMI in order to be able to recieve these high def audio formats.. so like i said above i use the reciever for video only when it comes to the PS3, and even then of course i use PASSTHROUGH

Guys just to get one thing clear, i will 100% get the blue artifacts and dots if i have On screen display ON in the PS3 right?

is it an important feature at all? it basically shows u the volume and listening mode on the screen?

in regards to the blue light on the volume knob, its an attractive one i must admit
