Best Buy Co. Inc. on Sun. price cut a stand-alone Blu-ray disc player to $249 in the latest high-definition promotion.
On Sun., the retailer discounted the Insignia Blu-ray disc player to $249.99 after an instant $30 savings.

Exactly, especially since you'll be able to get the Sony S350 for about $270-$280 in about 3 weeks time.

The Insignia / Mag players have the same issues the denons had playing TrueHD on certain titles and as of a few emails with support are not working on a firmware update anytime soon

No disrespect to original poster.

General downward trend in blu-ray prices is very good news. It should get close to $100 for large scale mass-market take-up.

It's not "that" bad! I considered buying the Sylvania counterpart (i.e. Funai) but I went for broke down & scored the Pioneer BD-51FP. There is nothing wrong with the Insigna for the average user. I agree to wait & score a Sony or Panasonic in the next few weeks with the price drop.

Who makes the Insignia again?

Still a good sign of price drops to come...

Funai. They also make Magnavox and Sylvania.

I bought an Insignia. It makes the BDP-S300, BDP-S1400 look like a "still loading" paperweights.

Well, the S300 and 1400 aren't even on my radar, cuz they're Profile 1.0 only AFAIK, and I hear the 1400 is rife with bugs too.

I'm really looking for an S350 class machine, but I want the price to be a little cheaper. Hopefully the S350 and brethren are fast... and the price drops quickly. I'm willing to wait until after Xmas if necessary.

If Best Buy can get a reasonable Insignia machine with few bugs and comparable specs, I'd be willing to give it a shot for the right price. The fact that a machine might be made by Funai doesn't bother me.

The Insignia actually isn't a bad choice at all so long as your TV can accept 1080p/24 and you have a receiver that can do the DD+, TrueHD, DTS-HD decoding.

For anyone who just wants to "get the information off the disc" without any further changes, the Insignia does a good job.

But it is not a very good choice for a lot of people. It's regular 1080p/60 output is poorly de-interlaced. Clearly, the decoder is outputting 1080i, which is then de-interlaced by a low quality chip for 1080p/60 output. But 1080p/24 output is fine, since the 1080i decode is just put perfectly back together into the original 1080p/24 encoded on the disc itself.

And since it doesn't do any TrueHD or DTS-HD decoding, it's a poor choice for anyone using a HDMI receiver that can accept PCM via HDMI, but has no TrueHD and DTS-HD decoders of its own.

For a lot of folks though, who are buying a new TV that can accept 1080p/24 and will only be using the TV speakers or a HTiB that can only use the optical or coax audio connection anyway though, this is a pretty darn good choice and a lower price than any other player.
