Harman Kardon AVR 7550HD (2008 announcement) - Page 50

Wow, don't know where to start...
If any of you have been following my ordeal with my 7550HD, it's been fixed!
Yup! BUT not by Jam industries but by a mechanic I know that works for Ferrari!
Ya, I know it sounds weird but he fixed it.

I was desperate and while he was working on my sons car (No it's not a Ferrari) I briefly told him about my problem
and he kindly offered to help!

So he took my unit for a day and...
My subs work great now! They hold their settings!
MY 3D bypass mode works great! I can finally watch 3D with 1 videocard! (I have been struggling with this forever!)

I have no idea what he did but what I do know is it seems everything is normal with my receiver!

There's no way in hell I'm sending my unit to Jam for the RMA I have with them.

It feels good to have a working amp!

Glad to hear everything is working for you.

After going through the H/K exchange process yet again for my 4th 7550HD, I finally decided to stop playing roulette with the exchanges and jump ship to another brand. I ended up buying a Pioneer Elite SC-68 which so far I am quite happy with. I'm not sure what I'll do with the newest 7550HD that H/K sends me, but for now I'm just happy to have a working receiver regardless of brand. Best of luck to all of you with problems and happy listening to everyone.

I've been tracking this thread periodically and lamenting the many issues people are having with the 7550 and holding my breath for when I will have a big problem with my unit. So far I have not had any serious issues and continue to enjoy the unit, primarily the great sound.

However, I have now found an issue that is not catastrophic but nevertheless annoying. I just got a new modem/router installed by TELUS (the internet and IPTV providor) so that I could get HDTV with my existing subscription. Now when I connect the AVR 7550 to the HDMI out from the TELUS Box (which is connected to the modem by ethernet) the AVR seems to have trouble maintaining a connection. At first there was no sound and the picture had a bunch or red lines and was flickering. Finally after playing around with resolution settings on both the TELUS box and the AVR I get a clean 1080i picture and Dolby Digital sound, but every few minutes the AVR drops the picture and I get the white noise screen even though the sound is still there.

If I bypass the AVR altogether and connect the TELUS box directly to my TV the picture is fine, so it is definitely the AVR 7550 having trouble managing the IPTV feed.

Has anyone ran into this issue before and is there an obvious fix?

Thanks.

Turning the HDMI Bypass for that source on (which disables the video processor) *might* help, however doing so will eliminate any on-screen volume/status overlays and the alpha-blend main menu (opening the AVR OSD with bypass on will interrupt the video stream)
Forcing the source device to output a single resolution at all times (rather than changing with source content / switching channels) will also help with drop outs.

If your device has HD component video output (and provided it is not copy-protected/dead when viewing HD content), I'd advise using it to the AVR instead of HDMI along with an optical or coax SPDIF connection for audio and say goodbye to dropouts entirely. This is what I've done with my Motorola/Comcast HD STB/DVRs (which are a bit finicky even when connected directly to the displays via HDMI), no problems since. The audio will still cut out for a fraction of a second when the source audio stream changes format and the receiver switches processing modes, which is normal.

Thanks dRockHK,

I did play around with HDMI Bypass but it didn't seem to work. I did set the AVR output resolution to 1080i rather than 1080p in case the 7550 was having trouble converting the 1080i to 1080p and that may have helped with cleaning the picture up, but it is still droping the video entirely every few minutes.

The component video option might not be a bad idea since I think many of the video feeds are only 720p anyway. And the audio is only Dolby Digital at best.

I will let you know if that solves the issue.

Cheers.

Do you have the latest HDMI 1.4 firmware installed..

Just my $0.02... wink.gif

there is discussion of this issue on this thread as well as cable threads. its not the avr but the cable box. go to component cable with a digital audio connection. picture is as good as hdmi and you still get on screen avr volume display.

I have not opted to get the update. I am still on HDMI 1.3. I don't really need the 3D support and from what I have heard from others about support in Canada I don't want to take the chance of getting a different unit sent back. My 7550 works very well in most regards. I have had the standard video fan noise issue and replaced it with a spare CPU fan that blows more air and is much quieter, so I am going to stick it out for now. I have a 3 year warranty on the unit so I still have almost 2 years to go.

I solved the issue with the component video and optical audio. I get 1080i picture which the AVR upscales to 1080p and the audio is Dolby Digital. Works just fine and no buggy issues.

Thanks for the feedback all!

Do you remember the part # of the cpu fan that you used? When I first had the video fan noise and checked around for a new fan, as I recall it was a smaller diameter fan that was not readily available at the local computer shops.
thanks

It is not the right size so it doesn't fit inside the housing. It is attached on the outside, so asthetically it doesn't look so good.

I am building a new media room soon anyway and at that point will look for a more elegant solution, including having the unit inside a cabinet that is ventillated with a larger fan.
thanks for the reply kmaclac. My fan just recently started making some noise again and I gave it another shot of oil and all is good again. At some point in time I would like to replace it with the correct sized fan. If anyone knows of a aftermarket fan that fits please post the part #.

thanks

Hello guys! am an Italian boy and I need to ask you an opinion because here you never speak of Harman Kardon on our forums ... currently I have a yamaha 2067 (your A2000) coupled to a final Rotel 1070 with speakers Focal 826 + cc800v. I would like to replace coupled with a HK _ 760 (found 1000 euro in the Netherlands, but I care a lot about your reports of serious bug ... Certainly as we gain audio performance, but then ... What do I do? Thank you for the tips! rolleyes.gif

Is the new model 3700 a replacement model to the 3600? If not for 7550HD, is HK going to have any replacement for this 7550HD? Anyone has update? I have this 7550HD refurb as replacement to a 2 months new 7550HD 7 months ago. Now it started give me trouble again. Lost audio in all left side channels when play in stereo (2 or 7) mode. on/off by itself or manual switch to different mode and back to srereo mode to get all channels back. Already step down from brand new after 2 months to refurb and have to pay the shipping.

Yes, the new 3700 is a replacement/successor to the 3650 and 3600 models. A new 'flagship' 7 series model has yet to be announced, though seems very unlikely.

The 3700, much like the 3650, will offer many of the features which were exclusive to the 7550HD (e.g. internet radio, network streaming, USB playback, RS232 control, 12V triggers) - along with several new additions like airplay, app control, wifi for the internet connection, more HDMI inputs with 4kx2k support, dual HDMI outputs with ARC and CEC power control, etc.... as should be expected from a receiver that is several years newer.
It shares the same familiar, easy GUI interface first seen on 254/354 models - but with some further tweaks as with each generation that followed the original.

However, it lacks the 7550's 'full-process' Logic7 (to layer logic 7 on multichannel streams), analog multichannel inputs with bass management, the much more advanced EZset/EQ II (which also supports dual independent subs), zone2 composite video + OSD, A-bus Zone2, far fewer analog audio and video connection options, the 7550's higher amplifier power output/current, the LCD-screen equipped remote with larger (but likely more outdated) code library (otherwise same), and the cleaner exterior finish with hidden front panel controls and connections.

Does anybody know why these new receivers from HK are so light in weight compare to the older models? Is it new technology or they just inflating the watts per channel like most companies out there?confused.gif

I explain it in the new 'official' 2013 HK topic I started couple of weeks ago: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1450096/2013-4k-harman-kardon-avr-2700-3700-receivers

I have had the 7550HD for exactly a year now. I exchanged once after one month of havign it for fan noise. The second unit doesn't have fan noise, but developed static in the center channel about 6 months ago.

What should I do? take the risk of exchanging one?

Anybody have the volume knob get unresponsive ? Any quick fix ? My old HK was smooth as silk. This thing has developed a lousy volume knob. I have to spin it and spin it. Arg.

Does anybody know if the 7550 has an internal battery for memory? It doesn't happen every time, but quite often when the power goes out, the receiver loses all settings and resets back to factory default - from what I've read (and experienced with other H/K receivers), it should hold the settings for at least a few weeks without power. The manual states "up to four weeks", however mine will often lose settings after only a few minutes. It's absolutely infuriating to have to go through the entire setup process when this happens.

As a last resort, I suppose I could buy a battery backup power supply, but I'd rather have it work the way it's supposed to if it's simply an internal battery that needs to be replaced (not to mention I just expect things to work on equipment this expensive!).

I just dropped my 3650 at the UPS store. Sometime soon I'll have a refurb 7550.

The issues I had with the 3650 were Apple TV having weird red pixels all over from every HDMI in using 20 different cables (all work fine with everything else) no HD video via HDMI from component video in (it has no component out) and the inability of assigning the audio in to any video input like my AVR 645 (which I have replaced to my system and sounds almost as good AND gets louder than the 3650). The only reason I upgraded from teh 645 which has been great since 2007 is I want more high def inputs (the four HDMI & 3 Component which will output HD video via HDMI will be more than enough)

I hope the 7550 I get is a good one.

Anyone know where to find or have the 5 x driven wattage? It is quoted as 120 x 2 and 60 amps.

The HK website and brochures had many errors for the 7550HD power output specs, here are the real numbers..
  • 85W x 7, 20Hz-20kHz, @0.07%THD into 8 Ohms
  • 100W x 2, 20Hz,-20kHz, @0.07%THD into 8 Ohms

Thanks. I have been looking for weeks unsuccessfully.

How about 5 channels?

Thanks.

I ordered these:

Noctua NF-B9 Fan

Noctua NF-A4x10

I hope to be able to get the 40mm inside the rail to avoid any butchery & will run them on their own external wall wart like I did with my AVR 645 successfully for 6 years.

I love Amazon Prime living less than 5 miles from the fulfillment center.

Ordered Monday about 11am came today.

These are the nicest packaged fans I have ever sen.

Harman shipped the 7550HD today. Scheduled delivery is Wednesday, 51.60 lbs is the weight. The 3650 is 31.40 lbs.
Got my 7550 yesterday. Guess I m used to the 645, even with the ugly GUI it was easier to set up. I hate the ABDC inputs.

Love the binding posts.

Installed my fans.

I intended to replace the oem fan with the 90mm one but getting it out was easier said than done so I added mine & have all three running on a variable wall wart at 9v.

I had to reset it after initial calibration because the surrounds were running out of the front for some reason. At first I thought I had attached them incorrectly.
Are you still planning to change out the video fan with the 40mm fan ? Let us know if you got the fan to fit without any mods.

Thanks
