HD DVD would be really silly and will never happen. SACD without DVD-A would limit the appeal for most of the high resolution audio fans, because most of that group owns many of both formats, so that is something that is needed. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD bitstream and decoding is even more important than DVD-A. I am hoping the player is released when all of that is working, there should be no competition at the likely price points if Oppo can pull that off. Of course it is easy for me to say that is what Oppo needs to do, what Oppo will do is the best they can given the time and cost constraints. There are likely going to be a number of sub $500 players that can both decode and bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA by the time the Oppo player hits the market, and without doing the same, the chances of another Oppo internet smash success will be reduced.
I am sure Oppo already knows the importance of those features to their intended market. With about 200 of each give or take, SACD/DVD-A/Blu-ray discs, and HDMI 1.3a audio processing for all formats, I am assuming I am the typical target and I know what I need from this player. Other potential members of the market may have only analog inputs so advanced audio codec decoding and analog out is important too. I don't doubt it will do pretty well if all of my requests aren't included, but a market segment is lost for each part that is missing.
All of this talk about being released before Christmas, I would sure be surprised, but if it happens that is great.
