First pics of Oppo's upcoming BDP-83 BD/DVD/SACD player from CEDIA - Page 2

Considering Oppo DVD players cost 50-200% more than your standard dvd player, you probably won't see a featured packed Oppo costing same or close your typical Pioneer, Panasonic and Sony... which already cost 599.
Well my question is: how will the resell price of my 983 subtracted from the street price of this compare to the Panasonic corporate discount price on the BD35?

The answer to that will sway my purchase. I'd love a single disc player in my rack, but I'm only willing to spend so much for that luxury.

Might finally retire the power hungry PS3. Price is critical though especially with 1.1 and BD-Live ready players approaching $300.

I would tend to agree that a feature packed Oppo player is going to go for more than the other comparable models.

Oppo knows they are highly regarding in the enthusiast community. They probably can get away with $699 initially.

Also @Big J:
On the second picture, above the power connection, it shows the two round globes of the region coding for DVD and BD; so, I guess not region free.

But you can always buy a ModKit or even a complete region free player from www.bluraymods.com (or one of their distibutors); shipping is quite reasonable as well IMHO.

Somebody at CEDIA please post better pictures of this puppy!

Yes, the photo of the front doesn't make it that attractive looking.

Kidding, but I'm definitely waiting for this player to be released before buying my first BR player this winter/spring. I love my 983 and have high hopes for the S83. The S83 and Pio 51 are on my very short list.

Roland,
I am in complete agreement with you. I've been looking to "pull the trigger" on getting my first Blu-Ray (yeah, I'm a bit slow in getting the toys, but am extremely particular about their capabilities). The Pio 51 was on the list, but was uncertain about its DTS MA abilities (my very quick scan of these forums left me thinking that the FW updates to enable those abilities wasn't out yet). Then I was reading about Oppo looking to release a new Blu-Ray player, and about their existing DVD player upscaling abilities. All that reading left me wanting Oppo to come out with a player that included all the Pio 51 cabailities and the current capabilities of their 983H model (ABT upscaling and more). If they come up with a pre-order list, I'm in too (if it does all I want it to).

Alan,
First off, thank you very much for posting the pics. When you posted "1.3 2.0" in one of your next posts, I'm assuming you meant HDMI version 1.3 and BD profile 2.0 . . . right? Also, being that the unit was in the ABT booth, is it safe to assume that it has the ABT upscaling chip(s) in it? Do you think that they are the same or better than what is in the 983H? I have alot of SD DVDs and upscaling is one of my most important capabilities desired. I'd rather buy one player instead of an Oppo 983H and something else.

Anyway follks, thank you all for sharing your insights, test results, and most importantly, the info you happen across.

T

I think all OPPO DVD players are region-coded. The nice thing is that they can all be made region free with a simple remote key sequence. I would expect the same to hold for this player. However, I highly doubt that they will mess with Blu-ray region coding. Not a big deal for me, since most of what I want is region 1,2 or A.:-)

ARGH! If half of my collection wasn't HD DVD, I would totally sell my 970HD and LG BH200 and go with this player. What the hell, I just may anyway as I'm always up for minimizing the amount of gadgets under my television.

Please be priced reasonably!

It would be great to get a few hi resolutions shots of the front and back.

Indeed! Anyone have better pictures?

Yes I am thinking in the $600-$700 price range, but who cares if it has everything?

Considering I paid $699 for my Denon 2200 a few years ago, this sounds like a bargain. Was thinking about the Sony 550, but think I'll wait on this to be released. If it's anything like my 980, it will be worth the wait.

Look at your calendar!

This year's Winter begins on 12.21.08, and continues through 3.20.09!

After only 10 days of Winter in in 2008, the majority of the season is
in 2009 - hence - Winter 09!

Comedy. I was obviously thinking November 2009.

With the 983 being $400, what is its true competition and its price?
Just trying to grasp the $ concepts some are coming up with.
The most I would pay for this is $599. I think OPPO understands that they need to put a little distance between the DV-983H and this, while not pricing themselves out of the market.

Yes you are correct. Im not sure on the scaling but Im guessing from the booth it was in they are indeed working together but no official word on this.
Totally missed the Oppo booth. I'll get some pictures tomorrow with my dSLR, but wont be able to post them until I get home Sunday.
Well, it is very easy to miss their booth, simply because they have no booth. The player is supposedly somewhere in the ABT booth.

Ahh, I was there and I still missed it.

Let me say this about price, Secrets says that the 983 is categorically the best DVD player ever, with the Denon 5910ci being the runner up.
Denon 5910ci sells for $3200, the Oppo 983 sells for $400.
I think Oppo's Blu Ray player will be $800, with Denon universal flagship around $6400.

Try Booth #1058, DVDO/Anchor Bay.
