First pics of Oppo's upcoming BDP-83 BD/DVD/SACD player from CEDIA - Page 3

Well...I waited for the Panasonic BD50...then the Pioneer 51...now was looking forward to the Sony 550...while also considering the Oppo 983 for the best possible SD DVD playback in my setup.

If waiting a little longer can get me all of the above in one nice neat little package for under $800...I can wait. I figure it would have cost more to get them as separates anyways.

A match made in home theater heaven!

It sure is slick looking...

This will look great next to my XA2. I am hoping the BDP-83 is the XA2 of Blu-ray players. It sure looks like it could be.
Just a side note, I'm glad black is back. I was getting sick of the silver crap.

It should be noted that it isn't a working model. I doubt we will see this anytime soon, but I can't wait to get my hands on one! Hopefully it has a "native" output for BD as well as the phenomenal performance that the 983 has!

Obviously this looks like another excellent player from Oppo. I just hope it is out by spring of 2009.

so essentially it's just a black box at this point?

oh well... gives me some time to save for it...

I like the look, similar to the 983. However I do not like the big fat black bezel around the display. I say move the Blu logo over to the left side of the player in that spot where it looks like it is baron. Then the display should be exactly in the center of the player, both vertically and horizontally... with no black bezel. Just the nice flush mount display like on the 983.

...and Oppo?... please make it so that you can dim the power light.

I see it also looks like a total overhaul of the remote compared to earlier models. A nice pic of the front of the remote would be nice if someone could get that .

Thanks Alan.

I was looking at the prototype's picture of the back panel more closely, and compared it to Oppo's 983H Back panel picture from their site. I was pretty much able to confirm the following (Using 983 connection nomenclature), only two connections puzzled me (they're marked):

< Viewing at the prototype picture left to right >

7.1 CH AUDIO OUT
COAXIAL CONNECTOR, RED INSULATOR (RCA TYPE) - UNKNOWN
COAXIAL CONNECTOR, WHITE INSULATOR (RCA TYPE) - UNKNOWN
VIDEO OUT S. VIDEO
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT OPITICAL
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT COAXIAL
VIDEO OUT (COAXIAL)
COMPONENT VIDEO OUT
ETHERNET
USB 2.0
HDMI OUT
REMOTE CONTROL IN / OUT (RS232 seems to be missing)

I was looking at this myself earlier, and the two that confused you appear to be a stereo analog output (similar to how the 971HD had a 5.1 output and stereo output).

I was thinking the same, but also thought it might have been redundant having the 7.1 outputs. The 983 has a total of 13 coaxial connections, 9 for audio, and I guess it can use less for 5.1 or basic stereo setups , the prototype has 15 total. It could mean that the designers have to handle the non-HDMI audio differently than the 983. The 983 has HDMI 1.2, if I read correctly before, and the prototype will have 1.3 (and I don't know enough to tell anyone what the differences are, except for "deep color"). The handling of the audio may indeed be the need for the additional coaxial connections. It could even be changes to the audio circuitry requiring separate connections between 7.1 and the more basic connectivity.

15 total
8= 7.1
2= L + R (use this for direct hookup to TV)
1= dig coax
3 = component vid
1 = composite vid

Why does anything have Composite and S-Video jacks anymore?

I know some like to run composite to their projector just incase, for getting into AVR menus.

Troubleshooting is one reason. Another is for feeding a little secondary display in case you don't want to use bulb hours on a projector but want to see what a music disc menu (SACD, DVD-A, audio CD, disc full of MP3's, or whatever) is doing or get a movie queued up. In either case, very few of these players will ever see anything connected to either of those outputs...

Yeah, same here...thinking of getting a 980. BTW, I also have a HDV5000, which, after I last updated it via ethernet, now thinks it is a Toshiba.

I dunno though. If this comes in around $600, I don't know if I can justify it, considering I already have a Oppo 970 for SACD and DVD-A.

The RCA is a Toshiba clone after all. I still use it as a CD player.

I have been considering a standalone BD player to replace my PS3, Sony S350 was on my shopping list for a while but now I will have to wait and see. Lets hope the Oppo will come out in less than 12 months.
post #80 of 2797
I wonder if the BDP-S83 will play AVCHD files from and SD card attached to the USB port. I would kinda like an SD slot in the front. That would let me retire the PS3. Nice looking unit though.

Here's hoping it Region free both DVD and BD..

Ok guys...here is what I know from what I saw first hand.
The unit showed some sort of label that implied direct video out.
It sported a SACD logo on the front..as well as the AnchorBay Logo.
Rear panel had Dolby True HD and DTS-HR logos.
build quality felt very solid.
I think Jon Spackman will be posting pictures...as we took a bunch.

Thanks for the pics and info guys... I for one welcome the Oppo unit, after owning the 981, I been pretty impressed for what they can do for less and out beat everyone in cost and picture quality. The new Pioneer Units are great, but not sure which one will do SACD or DVD-A yet. Oppo has my vote, if they can get this unit under $600...
post #85 of 2797
I'm betting that the pair of analog outputs are for stereo SACD. Sony's better ES SACD multi-channel players have seperate stereo and multi-channel SACD outputs. Just a guess. One has bass management controls while the stereo output is direct without bass management.

More here:

SlashGear: Oppo Blu-Ray Player BDP S83 spotted at CEDIA
...and a number of other sites giving credit to AVS Forum for the news.

HOWEVER, it seems that this thread is incorrectly naming the player "BDP S83" instead of "BDP-83". That name is being perpetuated by sites who have based their reports on this thread. Shame.

Alan, can you fix this?

Anyone know what chipset (SOC not video processing) this badboy uses? I hope its faster than the Samsung 2550 which is the fastest I have seen thus far! I hope this is available in time for Christmas!
