First pics of Oppo's upcoming BDP-83 BD/DVD/SACD player from CEDIA - Page 4

Yesterday, I e-mailed Oppo, mentioning the reports filtering from CEDIA and asked for information concerning - release date, pricing and specs.

The company, for the moment, is not sharing any information.

Here's the Oppo e-mail response I received:

Unfortunately the display of the BDP-83 does not change our previous stance on announcing any price, release date, or even the specifications of the player. As the player has not been finalized in terms of hardware and software, we can't afford to offer any predictions at this time.

Darn, was really hoping for two HDMI outs so I could hook one up directly to my TV And not have to turn on my system to watch DVD's.

, and to all the Oppo haters talking trash... you know what you can do.. LOL

Looking forward to seeing this out. Hopefully they will make the price point reasonable. Starting new savings account today.

On the hdtv forum it says:

"They hope to have it out in time for Christmas. No features, price or firm release date information is available yet."

Umm Christmas! Yummy!
Based on past production times, it is highly unlikely that it will be out by Christmas. Oppo themselves have even said "winter '09". That is not too promising for a faster release. However, I'd be happily surprised if it was. I think it would be a major slam dunk for Oppo if they could pull that off.
I think it's probably safe to say that OPPO wants to have it out by Christmas, but simply realizes it's going to be tight and difficult and so don't know if they can actually pull it off. They've obviously been working frantically hard on this Blu-Ray player and will continue to do so. They're not stupid... they know if they can get it out before Christmas it will result in major sales for them. But the timeline is tight and they might not make it. That's why the official word is "winter" as it covers both before and after Christmas, whichever it ends up being.

OPPO fans are mostly established fans and will buy it either way, before or after Christmas. They will work as fast as reasonably possible to pull off the "slam dunk" but they won't risk their reputation by rushing something out prematurely and buggy. The sales gained by a pre-Christmas release would be quickly and permanently smothered by the later lost sales due to diluting their brand reputation.

In other words, a slam-dunk product is exponentially more-important than a slam-dunk release date.

Here are some pics I took yesterday.

So far the player is NOT HD DVD or DVD-A. There is no DVD Audio logo anywhere on the player. It seems they are still working on DVD audio for this unit. Hope it makes it.

Several nice things are the front and rear USB 2.0 jacks, IR input/output jack so ugly emitters are not needed, Anchor bay video scaling (2010 chip I believe).

It has DTS logos and Dolby logos on the rear, so It will at least bitstream all codecs, As for decoding internally, who knows yet.

Looks much nicer in person thatn these photos. I will buy one.

Glad OPPO has released this much at CEDIA - I got the impression they weren't going to do anything at all there w/ respect to Blu.

I'm hopeful that this will be the one alot of us have been after (Blu w/all advanced audio decoded output through 7.1 analog as well as HDMI, with VERY GOOD upscaler for SD DVD, SACD, good analog CD outs, saw the HDCD logo - more wishes would be DVD-A, good bass/speaker management)

This looks very promising.

I'm stoked!

This hack for the BH200 is better than nothing, but if I understand this correctly you have to switch the settings every time you want to change regions. And the process is not nearly as user friendly as the OPPO's. I still doubt that we will get a "turn-key" region-free solution for Blu-ray like we have for DVD.

more photos.

Also, the unit is about twice as tall as my 980 just to give an idea of its size.

The source direct logo is a first for me. I am not sure if that means it will output 480i over hdmi to a scaler for SD DVD or not. time will tell.

Now those are some nice pics! THANKS JON!

Now that I see the remote up close, do you have to be at least 80 yrs old to use it?
The buttons look gigantic compared to most OEM remotes.
I also see that it has a button labeled "light". So I'm assuming that means that it is backlit.
Notice also the "pure audio" button on the remote. I wonder if that is a similar implementation of Onkyo's "pure audio" mode.
I really appreciate the great pics Jon.

I've heard that the Pioneer 51FD (and PE 05FD) has maybe the best Blu-ray image of all of the current players. Based on current information, is there any reason to believe that the Blu-ray PQ would not be as good?

SAcd but no DVD- Audio? Thats strange! If this does not come with dvd-audio supprt then I am selling all of my DVD-audio discs.

I have a very hard time believing that Oppo would release a player that does SACD but not DVD-Audio.

The info I got is that they are working on DVD-A and did not want to put a logo on the prototype until its working. We will have to wait to find out what happens with DVD-A, but for now, its does not have support for it yet.

The remote looks like any A/V remote, the button are not too large, just a close up so you guys could read what the buttons say.

The front of the unit has a white PURE logo on the display, I am guessing a mode that turns off all hte video parts for audio only. sounds good to me.

This oppo looks really nice like a high end unit and I am sure anyone who gets one will be happy with the looks (have not seen it turned on yet to comment on its menus/speed/performance). I sure hope these come out soon as I want one for my theater.

Nice work oppo!!

Noticed on the remote Jon ;a resolution button ; wonder if this would do equally well as a source direct button and put out 576i/480i or only 480p ^ ? Source direct would be great

I would assume it should be the same as the hdmi button the the current remotes. That button will allow you to toggle between all the resolutions from 480i all the way to 1080p.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for all the great pics. You mention a front USB 2.0 jack; where is it on the unit, to the right of the tray and menu control buttons? The front USB is a nice feature, I'd like to see it.

All the way to the right. It's got a nice flushmount black plug covering it up.

Great pics.

FWIW the LCD has a "DVD-A" element right at the top left, above the "SACD" one.

Granted, that isn't conclusive evidence - my Toshiba A1 also had a "1080p" signal.

Oh, come on. They look just fine. If they were smaller, someone would complain that's it too hard to press a button.

Thanks Smarty-pants ; the source direct logo on the back could just have been referring to the 1080p/24 encoded on the disc. Perfect for a vp

I'm sure it was just an optical illusion. The one picture with the hand holding the remote, at first it looked pretty overstated, but upon examining further, it was probably just my first perception. What pops into my head was one of the GIGANTIC remotes "as seen on tv" type deals. Have you seen them? The buttons are like 2"x2"... .
