How well does a 1080p LCD handle 720p content?

Hi,

I'm planning to go for a 40" LCD soon. I'll be connecting it to my PC via hdmi. Main usage will be for movies in .mkv, plus a bit of PC gaming, and some PC usage. (this will not be my primary monitor). Sitting distance will be 6'-7'.

My graphics card wouldn't be able to handle 1080p in newer games, so I'll have to play at 720p. How well will the LCD scale this?

I'm more or less settled on samsung, and have to decide between the 4-series and 5-series. (A650 is over my budget). If it were just a question of 720p vs 1080p, I would have gone for the A450; but the A550 has better specs, mainly improved contrast.

Any advice?

The panel is fixed at 1080P and has no problem doing 720P - primarily all Broadcast Masters and Film has 1080P folded within to match your panel and some video games and some live sports are 720P or less but it shouldn't be an issue if you understand the math and how video games are produced - polygons aren't real. You should be able to set the match on your console for the game or let it do it's thing without farting around.

Keep in mind video games are not real so there may be limits compared to true 1080P passthrough but damn video games look amazing on mine even at 480 and when I play Halo 3 it's like playing in a widescreen movie.

IMO the 550 is your best bet for your budget. For testimony in volume go check the owner reviews at Amazon - quite impressive for a budget level panel.

You actually could do a 46" at you distance if your feed it HD and if the budget can stretch there.

Thanks for the reply I know bigger is better, but I'll have a problem fitting 46" in the space I got.
Plus, if I increase my budget, then I'll start worrying whether to go for 46a550 or 40a650. Its a never ending process
